Turns out I was right and wrong. They DO use power, but it's for the remote control (and I guess clock and some other stuff too). The instant-on thing was from the vacuum tube days, however, and was true at that time.
That's true of lamps, but not, for example, anything with a clock, or a number of things with power bricks. They still appear to heat up when not in use, so something must be taking place there.
But the blue ones say "daylight." The other kind say... I actually have no idea, but they aren't hard to find. Home Depot is where I got mine, but I've bought others since that were no problem. The ones they sell now are different from those of yore.
Yes and no. First off, warm up period? Who cares? I've heard it's the same thing with TV's -- these days they always consume a little bit of power so they can be instant on. Honestly, I'm not in so much of a rush that I need to consume extra energy all the time for things like this. 30 seconds is not an unreasonable amount of time to wait for full brightness. You CAN see while the light is not 100% warmed up.
As for color, I mine don't look fluorescent at all. I honestly can't tell the difference until I look directly at the bulb, so I'm not sure what your problem is. The light DOES look different (I could tell that I installed CF's in major fixtures right after I did it), but not a fluoro hue -- in my new place, I can't even tell the difference.
Unfortunately, you can't get blood from a turnip. In this case, you can not get information about WMD's in a country that doesn't have any.
This is really the reason torture and the death penalty and other things are cruel and unusual punishment -- there is virtually no way to get it 100% right. If you imprison someone for 20 years in humane conditions, at least if it was wrong, you can take them out and apologize. Not if you've destroyed them physically or psychologically, however.
I really don't think that's true. I didn't have Home and Business, and Schedule C worked just fine. They told me I'd be better off with some other version, but it did everything it needed to do.
I personally would prefer that the government be the recipient of my W2 and let THEM do my taxes. They know how much they think I owe, and they're going to fuck me if I get it wrong... why not eliminate me from the process?
Split over millions of people, it doesn't cost goddamn $16.95 to pay that person. And hey, that person gets a job out of it. My paying this $16.95 is probably going to some dick's golfing excursion.
That may be true, but there's also the option of dropping them into the mailbox. I personally have never seen a line at a mailbox, but luckily there are a few to choose from in most places.
Most Linux people don't need you to support them, they just need you to stop pretending that shit like "bad login or password" has anything to do with the configuration. I had this one on Verizon: auth errors. It was clearly a problem with my account, whether or not the password problem was mine (forgotten password) or theirs (disabled account, etc., which it turned out to be). I kept getting the "what version of the Verizon DSL CD do you have?" I don't care if you don't support Linux, support the operation that I am attempting to do.
That's actually not necessarily true. It is very much an attitude thing in my part of the country. I live just 20 mins outside of NY (by mass transit), or a few miles as the crow flies. I live basically at the intersection of every bus route that runs through this area, and a block from the train station, and I can get just about anywhere in NJ without a major hassle. That said, most people in my building appear to drive to work (even though parking a car costs over $150 a month), many of them along bus routes.
People don't want to ride mass transit. I don't know why that is, but I've just about given up giving a shit.
I had something like that happen once, with some subtle differences... I waited for about 5 mins at a light that I knew to be finnicky, and I finally gave up, made a right on red (legal at that intersection) another right, two lefts, and a right to get to where I really wanted to go. I reported this to an officer in the train station (where I was headed). His answer was: " So go through it." I looked at him in disbelief and he said "Well, what are you gonna do, wait there forever?" Of course this is Newark we're talking about, but...
Even the Simpsons on FOXHD looks very very different. Colors are better and edges are crisper. Now does it look better than the Simpsons on a standard TV, I'm not really sure, but the standard on an HDTV is noticeably bad.
Not old enough to remember the last time they tried this? Neither am I, but... crack open the archives and you'll see that this was already done in the 70's and it worked about as well.

Thanks! Did not know that.

Next to impossible? Really how much has PC hardware changed in the last few years? I'm sure there are any number of places selling that stuff.

So does doing my taxes earlier.
For that matter, what refund?

The taxpayers may be saving money in salaries, but $16.95 goddamn dollars to file? Forget it, let them open my letter.
If it's going to save the government money, why should I pay for it?

He was likely modded Troll for not even knowing how to spell knobhead correctly.

...except you've forgotten 2000, which ran just fine (and still would if they'd stop intentionally making shit not work on 2000).

Sophos has certainly explained the vulnerability very well, however. Kudos to Sophos!
Who runs telnetd anyway?

I know more than one teacher, and one recently said to me that right around the DST changes, the kids are "bonkers" for the entire week.
Maybe THAT'S what you meant by the post about not having kids?
You get free wine, why would you be complaining?
I wish I could figure out how to make wine with an alarm clock!
Schedule change.
Problem solved.
