    In the early days of banner ads, studies showed that "Click Me!" style ads were far more effective at getting clickthroughs than ones which gave better descriptions. I'd be curious to know if this holds true as people get more savvy -- and to know the actual *usefulness* of the hits generated.

    I really don't like that -- I appreciate having the ads obviously separate from the site and from the site's content.

    Think of how annoying the in-movie commercials are getting these days. Did you see the pepsi-ad scene stuck in the midde of The Thomas Crown Affair?

    Sure it exists. It's what dpkg and rpm and other package managers are for. They don't save the original files, but it's pretty easy to revert.

    SGI sells a lot of supercomputers too, and IBM is definitely muscling in on that territory. For example, BU's SCV has been basically an SGI shop for years, but the new computer we just purchased is an ASCI White.

    This product isn't new (at least not in net time). The Linux version has been around since the beginning of this year, and on other platforms it's existed for at least a year before that.

    After selling the OS part of the company, their Tarantella product is pretty much all they have left. I believe that it even said in some of the stories relating to the sale that SCO wanted to refocus themselves around this product. So, this name change is pretty much completely expected.

    It's a shame that all the cool names keep disappearing. I'm glad 3Com has let U.S. Robotics live on as a product line name at least.

    That's a bug that's plagued Mozilla for quite a while. I thought it was fixed, but apparently not completely.

    The new thing that's bugging me is that new windows seem to be created more and more to the right, eventually so that only a pixel is showing. Hmmm.

    What platform are you using? How recent of a build have you tried? There were a few changes last week which made the linux nightlies go about 10x faster (I'm not exaggerating).

    On my Linux box (PIII 450), it's now about as fast (maybe a tiny bit slower) than Netscape Navigator on average pages, and way way faster on certain complicated ones.

    But if you check the context of my post, I was actually talking about startup time, which is six-seven seconds. Communicator takes about half that. And, there's more debug code at the startup than there will be normally -- it's an area where I think we can expect more than 30%-40%.

    No it's not. "Lego" is technically an adjective which has no plural. If you want to be pedantic, say "Lego bricks" or "Lego system". If you're not being pedantic, then it doesn't really matter what you say.

    Of course, these kind of tactics tend to be good for the company involved, and thus good for their shareholders. I don't think causing harm to competitors via FUD is grounds for a shareholders lawsuit.

    I find a really small computer far more useful than a big laptop. A big-sized notebook might be more powerful, but I've got desktop machines at home and work for that. Before I'd lug a 5-7lb notebook (+ big ole protective bag) somewhere, I'd have to decide if it's really worth the bother. On the other hand, I just slip my Toshiba Libretto in my coat pocket and go, without a second thought.

    Of course. My main point, though, is that (assuming it works) overclocking your motherboard by 5% will be far more significant then overclocking your CPU by 5% (or actually, by x%, where x is some number larger than 5 which I'm too tired to make up).
