  1. Re:Go with USB 2.0 on Firewire and Linux? · · Score: 1

    Lets see...

Using an Oxford 911 based firewire enclosure the performance will be about the same as the IDE... perhaps slightly slower. CPU usage will be much lower (if you have a good FireWire implementation in your kernel ;) (like SCSI firewire transfers are essentially free))

If you are using a USB2.0 drive, I think you'll have to wait a while... mainly for the drives... I really don't think USB2.0 drives actually exist at this point :)

There is a new little app call "iPodFreeFileAccess" or something which makes the iPod's music collection easily available on the mounted disk.

That means the directory is actually there... and for a simple program to be able to do it, I'd expect it to be simply just an invisible directory.

And let's admit it, the iPod hidden music directory will stop Joe RIAA violator from copying music amongst his mates via iPod.

    What about a FireWire Hard-drive.

Okay, I have, I do, USB HDs suck.

With the worst FW bridge chip you will get 4-5MB/s transfer, with the best you will get up to about 35MB/s or so (the main bottleneck will be the IDE drive on the inside)

The best firewire drives use the Oxford 911 bridge chip (I actually like the case OWC sell (the round clear one) OtherWorld Computing

    Now, USB HDs suck!

Imagine an HD which transfers 250-500KB/s

    yeah... imagine it.

    imagining it?

    think about it...

to help you imagine it... your Cable internet is probably faster...

That means instead of saving your MP3s to your HD, it'd be faster to redownload them....

    USB HDs suck!

USB should be used for keyboards and mice... Printers are a stretch, as are scanners.

FireWire rocks, but is overkill for input devices :)

    Hello McFly,

A programmer's job is generally to program a computer, you can't program a computer if it's been locked down to prevent modification, because programming it is modifying it.

Meanwhile, if you are an artist, and you have your paintbrush and canvas (painter + tablet) then you can paint.

A programmers canvas is his computer, and that computer must not be behind a wall in order for him to 'paint' on it.

Artists and Programmers make quite different use of computers.

After all, ASF streamhandling is implemented in all current versions of windows...

    ...

Well the answer is because microsoft holds a patent on the file format.

No reason really, except to create/stream an ASF file you need a patent license (which you don't get) so the only streamers which can stream to media player are microsoft streamers...

Its not because its hard to do... hell an GPL'd video editing program which could output ASF (virtualdub) had to remove the ability after they received threats from MS Legal

MS most certainly don't play with a straight cue...

Bah, it blows the crap out of anything available for any other platform.

1 - dock icon areas do not extend to edge of dock.

    Yes they do.

2 - dock changes size and icons move as it gets used

Any real OSX user knows this is not the case. Magnification is off, dock hiding is off, and all your common apps are in the dock... hence static... all that changes is the activity triangle underneath running apps.

3 - what if you don't like grey or blue? Maybe OSX.2 will have green and OSX.3 will have purple ....

Then install one of the 3 current OSX Appearance Managers (they allow you to load custom themes). The very active OS9 theming community is now diverting their energies to bring as good or better theming techniques to MacOS X.

4 - it has vi so when I go to the apple help and type in vi I expect to see at least something.

    "man vi"

same place where all the other man pages are... the apple help is for newbie stuff... and application level stuff (ie it has a gui). The terminal is where you run vi, and that's where you do man vi...

This is simple stuff, and is GOOD.

What the hell are you talking about? Them's MacOSesque scroll bars..

That's the way its done on a MacOS... wouldn't want it any other way.

The menubars are on a different side to NeXT, but they do have the NeXT double arrows.
