1980s Apple ][ BBS was popular. Maybe the ratio of computers with a modem was high to those without The computer itself was an App that let me program apps. I did not know friends with computers did not find that appealing. They wanted their apps out of a box- like the creator of their computer.
But microsoft makes a usable operating system for the average person. Not even 1/2 geeks can make Linux take video shots, load java, run ide's, download programms- Linux is too hard for users and I like Linux for programming.
Until IDE's and GUI's exist for the simple stuff in Linux and Unix they will continue to be unknown to the general public.
Hey why not go make it? You are obviously not a Windows only person.:) Make it take 3 clicks to install any card or install any program- Linux is too hard for people not wanting to be low level. Or be happy that most people are happy with Windows and paying Bill Gates.
The only way to prove computers will never do what people do is to show that our minds are products of actions which can only exist a human structure.
Since chess playing is done only by systems with wires and states between the wires I just don't see where anyone can ever say there will never be another (circuit) similiar or as functional as humans.
It is so obvious we are wired together. Any doubt about an objects ability to make choices that is not human is sheer ignorance of the last 500 years of scientific research.
Our evolving algorithms coupled with our computers hardward advancement will surpass human intelligence in extreme magnitudes.
Most anti-A.I. voices are fueled by fear of something stronger and smarter than them and ignited from lack of study in the field.

The computer will be able to use proofs by natural deduction, predicate logic, symbolic notation, rules of inference and of course symbolizing standard form sentences. When studying syllogistic logic one easily sees the connections between symbolized logic, its interaction on language and the resulting conclusions that can be made. Yes I'm bitter- getting into computers to be a good programmer didn't pay off. Not in money and it ruined my health. Unfortunately it matches my mind type so studying real estate for example is a drag- I like the technical side but not when its unsturdy ground. I think Bill Joy leaving is total proof Sun is hurting. They would be doing better if Microsoft didn't squash them. Some who worked there say it sucked and now we know the lead man Bill Joy is finding a lack of personal growth- which translates to- "this sucks, we write lame software, I'm not known as a master of something great in the industry, this company is holding me back, this dumb Sun thing isn't working- I knew we had no marketing skill and the people here are in a bubble with no desire to work synergistically." . I worked at Sony during Everquest development as the Java programmer. The C++ guys made fun of it but I said you watch- Java will have real compilers that make fast exe's and it blows away C++ for simplicity. C++ is just text and so is Java therefore compilers can be written on any system to make us of 3D cards and make high quality software.

I worked at Sony 989 studios during the development of Everquest. My hours were typically over eight hours a day and I was asked to work many weekends. As soon as Everquest was complete they fired everybody and hired back only a few. Some offered jobs back at $35k This affected many people, advice would be nice. I'd like to know if there is anything I can do legally.
Try NIMH batteries they are lighter than nicads, don't have memory issues and hold more. The only downside is extreme amp draw- for electronic devices they are fine- even flash cameras. If you want hard core light and strong batteries try lithium polymer batteries rated for high discharge- great for electric planes that fly vertical.
Back in the Apple ][ computer days I was visiting France and played a clunky slot. I thought if I could program the wheels in and know how many times they spun I could write code to tell my how spins to a win.
How about looking at the game then setting the emulator wheels in the same spots and running it till it wins?

Looks like if I was money hungry I'd have been the mapper of IP's to domains- a two column database!

this group is now a big boy with big power.

I understand the valid argument that we don't need more policing and who can judge which content is allowed and still feel a freedom has been infringed upon.
Once again you can say the world is ignorant while the big computer economic highways are laid out. Bill did it with stealing the best ideas, good marketing and quickly made bad software.
We can't make AI that detected bad sites and.kid filters are good in my opinion- I at least don't want my kids seeing a highlander victims neck up cloe at age 6- let him look at gophers when he's 8.
Too much power in their hands.
They should be split amongst slashdotters.
