Every couple weeks? What does Tivo do that you reboot it? I've had my unit four months and only needed to reboot once. The video started freezing, major artifacts, etc. I reboot the thing and all was back to normal. Other than that, this thing has more uptime than my main Linux box, but that's mostly because I keep buying new hardware for it.:)
Some people have tried, and there was one guy in the alt.*.tivo newsgroup that says his box was upgraded by an independant guy (not sanctioned by Phillips). I think most people just don't want to accidently blow their $400 investment. I've had the thing almost four months, and with just the 14hr unit, I don't run out of disk space much. I just watch regularly, and delete things when I'm done. If I don't watch live TV, I'd say about 4-6 hours is programmed via Tivo Suggestions and season passes. So, if I leave home or don't watch for a few days things will fill up.
As for sticking any old hard drive in, I'm not so sure you can. It uses Quantum QuikView drives, which are IDE, but somehow tweaked for multimedia stuff. As the hard drive is constantly going, you'll need a good quality drive like this so it doesn't blow up. Besides, next month Sony's unit will be out which is supposed to be a 30hr unit, at Phillip's 14hr price.
Let's see, you can get a VCR for $70 or so at Wal-Mart. A Tivo runs $399. Yup, it makes sense to use Tivo as a VCR.:) Tivo's beauty comes in the suggestions, tv guide thing, etc. There's countless shows/movies Tivo has recorded that I have enjoyed and would have never seen otherwise. If you don't want it, there's no point in wasting that $329 difference.
Don't worry, some people will complain about anything.:)
Since I got my Tivo in early December (just a few days before they started that $100 rebate, but I'm not bitter), I haven't watched many commercials. Well, other than the two or three flashes during Tivo's fast forward. And I must say, life is grand. I watch shows in 20 minutes per half hour, never missing a beat.
As for advertisers, well, commercials have always been the time when people go to the bathroom, make a sandwich, etc. When they crack down on toilets and mayonnaise, we can bitch some more.
I got an email yesterday that the next version of the software was released. It is now supposed to be able to mark a show for recording when a preview comes up. Further making things easier for lazy folk like myself. I just have to find a channel that has this feature now.:) The most useful thing I've used so far is the automatic pause. So many times I accidently hit the Tivo button on the remote during a show, and then had to fast-forward in the recording to get back to where I was...
And sometime this year there's supposed to be another update to fix the season pass overlap issue. You will give a season pass a ranking, then the higher ranking pass gets recorded when there are overlaps.
For what it's worth, their web site has their privacy policy which says your viewing habits, likes/dislikes, etc are never transmitted over the phone, only kept on your hard drive. Of course, that probably won't stop some people's paranoia. You can leave the phone unplugged, and just use it like a really expensive VCR. It just misses the whole point of the device.
Not just that, but when was the last time you saw one of the editors post in the comments? I've seen Katz/Roblimo a few times recently, but it certainly seems to me that all these sort of suggestions to Slashdot go unnoticed by those in charge.
Back in the olden days you could at least get a "no" from CmdrTaco when you suggested something here.;) Sure each of them probably get 50,000 emails a day, every post now starts off with 100 posts when you reload every 2 seconds, but could it hurt all of them to read up on the high scoring posts like this one, and post a little blurb, explaining why they posted a story, whether they can/cannot fix things (Apache stories color scheme for one), etc? Better connections with your audience can't be bad.
Oh, and yes, this is a place to get good advice on geek matters, what people think of such-and-such topic as it relates to free software, but let's not pretend this is a free lawyer service. I think it was when the judge released the paper on MS being a monopoly where the Slashdot editor went play-by-play with a lawyer on what the judge was saying in plain english. That was very nice, and it would be great to have more like that when issues of patents/copyrights/domain hijacking come up like this.
How has the dual-head G400 card support come along? Any sign of working?
I've grown to want more than just this lousy 1600x1200 display:). I went to the local computer shop and picked up a cheap PCI Voodoo3 2000, but it didn't want to play with my existing TNT2. I've read that Matrox cards are generally multihead friendly, but I can't find a PCI card around. Stores only sell the G400, and well, I've never seen a motherboard with two AGP slots. Would another AGP Voodoo3 card work with this 2000?
I've search through Google and the like, but all I've really found were posts like "Wait for XFree86 4." Is there any resource (preferably up-to-date:)) with good details on what works/doesn't? Then I can better gauge where to put my money.
The problem with that is most often the courts see "damage" as financial. If this guy is fired from his job, can't get a job, etc because every employer thinks he runs a site with naked Satans ranting about minorities, he has a clear-cut case. It's not impossible to get a judgement against Mattel, but it is much more difficult (and expensive) without that.
It was probably my dog. She has tendencies to say these sort of things. Ever since their IPO she hasn't been the same. I think she may have bought some stock short and lost a good deal of doggie biscuits in the matter. I have no proof, but my neighbor's cat is still investigating the matter. I will keep you posted as news come in.
The only conclusion I can come up with is that ALS wishes to obtain a monopoly on Linux shows. Next thing you know, they'll want money to go to it. To combat this, we shall put together a truly open source show. To enter, you must present some source code to the bouncers. No two attendees may submit the same code for approval. If your code compiles on the bouncer's laptop, is up to snuff (no obfuscation), you may be let in. All decisions by bouncers are final. Those who enter must share said code with all attendees. Those who do not will be roughed up a bit then tossed by said bouncers.
Are these mods/plugins compatible with both Windows and Linux versions, or do the mod makers have to compile bins for each side? Just curious as this site seems to be down for now, already. I think I read that Q3 uses some independant interpreter, so they are compatible. How does UT rank with this?
If we repealed the 13th ammendment, and I got the law to recognize you as my slave, it wouldn't affect the morality of the situation.
You seem to misunderstand the meaning of morals/morality. Morals are about what is right and wrong. These are completely static throughout time. It is people's values that change. Back in the early part of last century, people felt slavery was fine. That doesn't mean possessing another human is right, just that they adjusted their values so they didn't feel bad about it. The morality of it has always been that it is wrong.
I know this goes against the modern day notion that, "Whatever I want is right." Murder and maiming is always going to be wrong, but Ted Kaczynski/Timothy McVey just rationalized their value system to be that it is OK for a certain cause. The beauty of life is rising above your wants and doing what is right/good/moral. It keeps society running.
As for the MP3 issue, well we all say the author of some software is free to copyright it with whatever license he wishes. So, likewise, creators of music are free to license it how they like. Unfortunately many musicians are tied to these big agencies and only get a penny per CD, but that just goes with what they chose. Part of that "license" is that you must own the CD to make an MP3 of it. If you don't, then you are in the wrong, just as anyone would be if they closed up source to some Linux kernel modification. Now, you must simply choose what path you want to take in life, the easy/"I want" way, or the moral way.
Actually, it's just "HTTP/1.1 GET/" when I've checked with sniffers. When a browser connects to a proxy, it does give the whole URL like that. Most all modern browsers specify the host (for virtual hosts to kick in) via the Host: parameter after the GET.
uhhh . . . what? he's an american of african extraction. you're an american of european (predominantly german) extraction, i'm an american of mostly irish extraction
Since the (current) theories say man was born of Africa, you can say we're all African-American.:) The point is at what point does a single national identity come about? Early man migrated from Africa, up around the Mediterranean Sea, into Europe. How are those early men that migrated through Russian into North America "Native Americans" while we who have lived here for several generations, some as early as the late 1600's, with little connection or knowledge of family in the old country, still European-Americans? Do other countries have such a system, are there Swedish-Englishmen or English-Germans?
Perhaps we could put the "American" part first, to reflect "American with German/English/African ancestry."
A "conservative," by definition, wants to "conserve" the status quo.
Not quite. All the conservatives on the late 1990's want everything but the status quo. President Reagan hard wanted to keep the nation at it's status quo deadlock with Communism or economic hardship. Read about his speech at the Brandenburg gate, the famous, "Mr. Gorbachev open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" line. That was a battle between Reagan and his speech writers and the NSA begging him to leave things at the status quo, don't piss off the Soviets.
The status quo changes throughout history, oddly enough. No one group is purely for the status quo. We just happen to live in a time when things need changing. Conservitism is more about restoring the idea, dating back to the late 1700's, that the government should do only as little as needed, and leave the states to do the rest.
Take Roe vs Wade, conservatives don't just say, "Make all abortions illegal," but instead revert it to the states to decide. Or what sort of flags are flown over a state capitol, Bush, McCain, et al are lambasted for "not making up their mind" on the issue, when the one correct answer when you keep the Constitution in mind, is "it's up to the state to decide." If, as Mr. Gore stated a few weeks ago, "over 80% of the people" in South Carolina are against it, I don't understand how they elect state assemblymen that haven't torn it down by now. Or education, get the federal governemetn (and NEA) out of it and give it back to the state and local levels. The federal governement can oversee it, make sure kids are taught, but not to the point of, "You must teach X, Y, Z or else no money for you!"
I guess Conservatism is most about conserving those ideals that got this country started in the first place, a very simple federal governement, all men are created equal, all that nonsense. There has been bumps in the road along the way, we learn from our mistakes, but one day we'll get it right.
The problem there is some moderators must mark it interesting/insightful/funny to give it a few +1 scores. I believe it's only the last moderation that is put next to the subject. So the likelihood of one moderater marking it a troll as it should be has little effect overall, as another will come along and re-mark it. And it'd need three positive marks (which it has now) before the Troll marking to take it back down to Score: 2, Troll. The chances of so many moderators being in cahoots like this aren't practical. Clicking on the post number link reveals how it has been moderated.
It is not your right to collect info, follow around, etc... Would you like it if I now hired a private investigator to follow you around because I think you are a threat to the society?
The beauty here is in this country, you could. There are countless PIs going around following spouses accused of cheating and such every day. You can go as far as to say this method of governing sucks, and you won't (necessarily) be executed for it. Attempt to leave a Communist country, and you're dead. Where's the perfect system in keeping your people ignorant of any other form of governing?
Just as those sixth-graders proved this week, make a wild accusation and you can pretty well destroy a man's career. Back in the 50's actors that weren't liked wound up being accused of Communism so others could take their parts and what-not. Of course, to protect those sources, they were kept anonymous.
Call me silly, but I count six places to take the courses on RedHat's training locations page, three on the west coast, the NC headquarters, England, and Germany. Then going to their training core page, it seems that it's $2498 for a five-day course and certification. Then there's their exam-only page which alleges $749 for well-experienced people. But that one seems to only have NC and England with dates scheduled. Or are RedHat's pages somehow lieing? I haven't gone through their test, so I could be wrong...
Then there is the Linux International group's attempt at certification. That would be a more vendor-neutral way to go, when they settle on everything. I know the last place I worked sent people on $2500-5000 3-5 day courses in MSCE matters, and those were only for one or two of the tests, not the whole MSCE. Of course, being a corporation, they only sent the morons to those classes.;)
In a sense, MCSEs serve as an adjunct sales force and technical support arm for Microsoft. They are the best trained group of networking professionals on the planet; the world listens to them, and follows their advice and insight.
That's pretty much how MS sees the MCSE program, a way to force new software on the dumbed-down masses. Some bosses treat an MCSE degree higher than a four-year university degree.
I'm sure there are some MCSE's that know their stuff, I've known a few, but my experience with them in the corporate world isn't so favorable. We had one that though Microsoft invented DHCP, and the only way to fix some problem (after initial attempts) with the DHCP server/Domain Controller was to re-install NT Server on it. Then there is this fifty-something year old guy that got his MCSE and swore back when K6's came out he got a juiced up one doing 500+ Mhz, when the rest of the world was at 200. I could go on...
From my experience, there are far too many untrained network professionals "slipping" throught he cracks. I put that in quotes because I'll give MS the benefit of the doubt before I claim the are willing to give certificates to anyone who pays the fees. To me, a certification program wouldn't want so many dolts, as it would demean the integrity of the entire program. But as we've seen, this is a certification program with a huge marketting budget.
So folks, MS gave you that certification, which got you that job as a network professional, with a nice salary, the least you could do is to convince the company to upgrade to Windows 2000 now. That, my friends, is how they see you.
If money were the only requirement to good education, we'd have a bunch of damned smart kids. Near me is a town of 6000 people. There is a public school, grades 4th to 8th. This school received about $200,000 from the government. To teach them something worthwhile, you may ask? Nope. It was a grant to combat that evil menace, bullies. You see, it seems too many kids are unhappy, the worst of this nations evils. This is the sort of government we have in the US. Is it no wonder we come last in all those education comparison studies worldwide? For some of the nation's youth, learning things isn't how they expect to make it to college, but by sports. I know this kid that was recruited when he hadn't finished high school to play hockey in a Canadian university. Sports are nice, but should it become their career at age 16?
But it's a good thing there is the National Education Association, to protect our kids from evil Republicans wanting them to learn something, or even worse, expect teachers to teach something. Money is being sent to schools nationwide, and it all goes to the dozens of levels of administration. Increasing the amounts being given to schools from people's paychecks will only line the administrations with more employees. It's time for good ol' fashioned capitalism to kick in. It's about time parents were able to decide where to send their children.
When will you people learn proper math? $8.5trillion dollars times 7.25% sales tax (here at least) equals $616.25 billion, plain and simple. Just as every other industry loses bazillions every time you play an MP3, pirate software, watch a DVD movie in Linux, so too this wonderful country LOSES money each day the Internet is not taxed. That is how much money all you stingy bastards are keeping out of the hands of this nations sweet, innocent youth.
These kind, caring youths can't build new schools with indoor plumbing now. They can't have that brand new shiny computer hooked up to the Internet any more. Look at little Jimmy here (pull up some kid with dirt smudge on his face), his mother has to work 23 and a half hours a day waiting tables at Hooters just so he can keep the dirt he plays in so much. Do you really want him to not have his dirt?? Hope you and you're amazon.com books are happy.
Oh, and remember that nice little planet you live on? Well, it won't be nice for long, not without some money. How do you expect this planet to keep going without money to clean out it's coal and oil, the feces of this world? The world will just get all backed up and it won't be purty then, let me tell you.
And here is sweet little ol' Mrs. Kravitz. Her husband died last year, and she's been all alone since. She is expecting here Social Security check today. Look at her stand down there by her mailbox, all lonely, waiting for her only friend in the world, Mr. Newman, the postman. You see folks, in these parts, people don't have friends like you and me. No, they are only visited by some kind, generous civil cervants we like to call, postman. But what Mrs. Kravitz doesn't know, is that a bunch of mean lil' 20-year-olds don't want to fund such generosities as the United States Postal Service. Mrs. Kravitz will probably die in a few days of starvation, waiting here for her only friend in this world...
So, I hope you people are happy. And don't let those evil Republicans convince you that you don't need any more taxes. Look at how wonderful taxes like tobacco and gasoline have made everyone smile. Just imagine what sort of world this would be without taxes...
This probably isn't good enough for Linus, but I've ran with Ext3 for a good four or more months without a hitch. Maybe one, but I blame it on a HD's last days. I replaced it and all is well since. For heavy duty testing, I'd say rpmfind.net would qualify, though I'm not sure how old the message is on the front page. If any of you know what you're doing, and wondered about ext3, I'd say give it a whirl, no more 15-minute fscks when the power to my apartment goes out.;)
I've been hunting around mailing lists and howtos for the status of Ethernet USB in Linux kernels. I've found quite a bit about the USB->USB networking.
Here is a post that Free/NetBSD have drivers for ten devices. Close, you can compile free software, and it's not Windows.:)

I haven't gone through their test, so I could be wrong...
;)
Then there is the Linux International group's attempt at certification. That would be a more vendor-neutral way to go, when they settle on everything. I know the last place I worked sent people on $2500-5000 3-5 day courses in MSCE matters, and those were only for one or two of the tests, not the whole MSCE. Of course, being a corporation, they only sent the morons to those classes.
If any of you know what you're doing, and wondered about ext3, I'd say give it a whirl, no more 15-minute fscks when the power to my apartment goes out. ;)
I've been hunting around mailing lists and howtos for the status of Ethernet USB in Linux kernels. I've found quite a bit about the USB->USB networking.
:)
Here is a post that Free/NetBSD have drivers for ten devices. Close, you can compile free software, and it's not Windows.
