The problem with this is you need an central server for authentication. Or at least an authorithy that does this. And we have seen with anti spam orgatnistions (ORBS) and usenet you need a very thick skin if you want to be the regulator. A technical solution is wanted for this but i can not come up with one.
This would be a killer application for freenet, some kind of usenet, but with moderation to filter out the trolls/spam.
I am afraid this will just be a part of the arms race with spammers.
I downloaded the movie (13 MB). It reminds me of of the movie "WARGAMES". Some singe dot turn up then in the end the entire world turn suddenly red.
For the person who made it it is just a game, but for some other people it was reality. Lot of people had to go patching up. Lets see it.....360.000 server * 10 minutes each ~4 man year work.
I got one. And i just found out there are emulator s for it out there. I think i am going to revive it.
(Just use google for "mess" or "ti99 emulator" or "V9t9")
It emulates the 32 Kb memory extension as well. That was some hardware i could not afford in those days. And speech synth.
I played the parsec game hiscore round. Maybe again on the PC....
I am from the Netherlands. Big brother orignated from here. (It is from "john de mol"). Now we are going into the 3th season. It is called:
BIG BROTHER / the battle. With the calling for new people some of the most extreme clips they got from various country's got shown. I expect a lot of nudity (what is not illegal here).
As for the pay per view: they tried it, but i suppose it was not that popular. the 2nd season was way less popular. (like someone said here , is it still on then?). So the pay per view will fade away.
I just expect a sort of Jerry springer alike soap. With the difference this takes 100 days.
But after 2 seasons Big Brother and 2season "de bus" (like big brother, but then in a bus) i think we all get bored by it.
As for the "for adult" thing. Wouldn't the credit card to pay the 10$ block it. Why else are all those "Adult check" Web ages asking for a credit card no to validate the age. Not that i ever go there......
Linux started small. Ok there. how much people got linux V 0.23? 10? 100?
Mistake number 2. the Overhype syndrome.
A lot of people will say linux is overhyped. If it is so i did this not in the beginning, but long after Release 4 (something like V1.01 in linux version numbers)
Mistake number 3. Believing in Internet Time
I Do not really understand what joel is saying here. According to joel software does not get written faster because of the internet. And he makes an exception for internet explorer at the same time. (He just made mistake number 3?)
Mistake number 4. Running out of upgrade revenues when your software is done
This is clearly not about linux. simply put: what revenues. form this -> linux is not a good example!
Mistake number 5. The "We'll Ship It When It's Ready" syndrome.
linux does just fine there. You can get all kind of beta and alpha versions you want. (Joel goes wrong there: Mozilla was released, namely netscape 6.0 ).
Mistake number 6. Too-frequent upgrades.
Linux goes wrong here. A lot of people will want to use 2.2 kernels because they are not convinced that 2.4 is stable yet. But since there are still a lot of features wanted (run it on platform x , use File system Y ) it will keep changing. If you take Red Hat instead of linux you will hear, "don't use the.0 releases"
To sum it up:
-joes story is not about open source software.
-linux has not reached "cannot think of any REAL new features".

I still can make interesting party talk with this article. "A vertical huricane in the shower." . But to be honest, the explanation is much to short for me. In other words, i do not understand it.
Effective Midnight 7/31/2001, all non-subscription access to MAPS services will cease. Anyone wishing to transfer or query internet data must read the rest of this mail.
Send us and the following 6 people on the ACL list 1 DOLLAR. Then add your name to the ACL list and send it to everyone you know. you get rich in a few days day and receive no more spam at the same time!
Some testimony of users:
"i did not pay...and so dies . You've just cut your own throats. The effectiveness of MAPS always depended on the number of users, which is going to be paid out now. If you do not pay MAPS and the world arroudn will die (John Oliver) ,
"MAPS want a big number of subscribers....aministrators will
use MAPS..." (Karl-Henry Martinsson)
"This is a GOOD thing." (Sam)
Margie "mail" Arbon. Abuse Prevention System, TM Manager, Market and MAKE MONEY FAST Development.
Exactly my point. If you read the article (i think few people do actally read the article) they talk about SAN units and how it would help.
Somebody made a joke about doublespace, but better storeage algorithms do help to fil up the disk. i.e. ReiserFS does not use 4Kb for every file if the file is 10 bytes. Compression becomes more used if the CPU time to do it becomes cheaper.
Development does not stop, however you will not have a 1 GB drive in your watch the next 10 years.
+disclaimer:
No I am not comparing ReiserFS with doublespace, reiserfs doesnt have compression in its stable tree (last time i looked)
It is, and stays easy to run linux on this "sealed" boxes. The only reason they cannot run linux is thay some specifications may noy be released when the last PC(tm) is made available.
Huw, wait, isn't this already the case now? do the latest (matrox.power) gfx card have linux drivers. how about the latest cable modems?
And the new nvidia nForce. Will it have full linux audio support or just support some legacy mode?
Linux on lthe last model computer, forget it, you do not wnat that. If you know what it is all about you build and overclock your own system, it will be faster and just as cheap and will have all linux supported items in it.
Great thing about it that you will be able to run linux on 1 year old PC's that are thrown away.
and... you do not need to hack a box to run linux on it. Just boot the cd....
Wasn't reusabilty a way to make spaceflight cheaper. That is why the space shuttle was invented. And i have seen a lot of pictures of a rocket that can vertically land again, refuelled and launched again, on discovery channel.
A nuclear engine cannot be just taken apart, refuelled, and lauched again, since after a couple of lauches it would be very radio-active.
The one thing a nuclear rocket could be useful for is for interplanetary flight, but that is not what is talked about in this article.
But i am not a expert with nuke stuff. (except in computer games.....). Didn't even do a google search.
1.Splash-screen mode.
windows 95 mode. show nothing, log it too boottxt.log if pressed F5 on startup. 2. Concise mode:
Dos 6.0 mode. show starting up.....
(going init level 6) 3. Verbose mode
Geek mode. (like it always was) maybe it should also be possible to confirm every driver that is loaded with Y/N
However if this makes it in linux 2.6(?) i will be missing the slashdot "linux now runs on Risc-Q" see the Boot log here on the/. home page.
If the whole thing is a troll, it is definitely in the top three. But the zikzak troll was also very good
What is this zikzak troll? Yes, i did find the user zikzak, but i could not find about his great troll he made, and i think i was not reading/. when he made it. Tell me about it.
Yes, you can mod this as offtopic,(how much karma can i loose in 1 post?) But why did they post about the outage? to advertise cisco? Because it was a detailed geeky story (Not, the very technical details are misssing, tell me more about this network layout, why can't we ping the site)
a 1 kg black hole computer is ~10^51 operations per second.
1 Megahz = 10^6 operations per second 1 Gighz = 10^9 ops per second. Moore's law seems to go for speed now too. amout 10 time faster in 5 year. so we still have to go for about 200 year before we reach this speed.
I do not think i live for another 200 year. no problem there.
Damn! the sun does not go black hole for some 10^9 years. no luck here......
OK, they needs too open up some of the MOBO desing. Everything they desinged entierly them self can and will be opened up. I bet linux will be runinnf on it in no time at fulle speed.
But ther are more things to this chipset. The southbrigde has an excellent sound chipset integrated. HOWEVER this does (also) use a dolby(C) digital 5.1 output.......
I bet this dolby thing will not be open sourced, and if anyone figures out how it works it will be an very raw mode.
More work has to be done also on the integrated modem (I cannot read if it is a winmodem from the specs) and the 100Mb lan. Will the open up specs for this as well?
Wasn't MS caught with hotmail claiming too much users? Just too pump up the statistics leading to a higher share price? It is very easy to get more users, just include all those accounts not used, or include some hits it gets becuase some picture was linked from some other page.
I can not think of an example where such advancements are made for mass producing consumer goods. But i think the above examples invalidate much of your story.
One point is that lots of inventors never(seldom earn any money, and only few exceptions make a lot of money.
I think that whilst the great discoveries of our time and times gone by will more often be found by scientists and visionaries of the academic kind
Another point is that a lot of inventions were made by accident.

(Hmm, normally this kind of stuff is modded off-topic, shit there goes my karma)
In C ("the" programming language) a comma in a expression just seperates 2 statements:

results in 2.
However it is "News for nerds. Stuff that matters.". That is a dot.

Ok matrox released some. (i did not bother to check. But my statement holds, as you say yourself nvidea does not release sources.
you can only run "old" hardware under linux or have no drivers for the latest things.

however since star wars is already in its second prequel mr lucas can still improve its ship desing so it makes a change agianst the enterpice.

Is also very incaccurate since i mix up speed and size.
