    What i did see on the P4 video:

    -It first slowed down.
    --> This indicates some thermal protection is available. Or what part of the thermal protections are you reffering?
    -It shuts down after some time .
    --> you did expect a cloud like tom's AMD procs?

    And according to the intel link you posted this is exactly what should happen. Seems like tomsh P4 did not run hot enough (135C) to completely shutdown.

    AMD zone also has an update on this story. The most interesting thing (to me) is that they have a 2nd video that show the P4 shuts down. With possible data loss like the modified XP tom was shown in munich.

    Scientifically fire a .45 into the heart of the processor. Run performance test.

    And we get back where we started from: With or without the heat sink. It is possible that with a GOOD heat sink it might survive the shot. Did you see the heat sink on the AMD? That is bigger and has a bigger change to survive. I think you are AMD biased!

    I remember a report where some hardware was shot. The "sun" computer survived some guns. The bullets penetrated the box, but got stuck on the rf-shielding. it still booted. I cannot find the link on google.

    then please name those packages. If one has to try out ech and every product named in your link it takes along long time.

    I think you may misunderstand Bugzilla

    If it is not used for tracking bugs but used for (almost) everything why nog call it Godzilla? The big mean animal in the movies was also an animal that needed to be killed? Or why not call it 42?

    The link points to a lot of links (as far what i can see). But do you have EXPERIENCE what packages are good? what packages are really in beta? Trying out all those links will take a lot of time. Why not say what is useful to a pro? please write a long story.

    Or did you just do a search for sound midi linux and earned quick karma. (In that case just ignore me).

    The software technology, according to industry sources, would essentially act as a downloader, repeatedly requesting the same file and downloading it very slowly, essentially preventing others from accessing the file. While stopping short of a full denial-of-service attack, the method could substantially clog the target computer's Internet connection.

    Ok, this will solve the problem of needing a very fat pipe to disconnect one user. To disconnect 1 PC from the network they need 10 connections (most peer to peer software have a default limit of 5 to 10 simultanous connections allowed.

    Number of napster/gnutella/imesh/audiogalaxy/etc/etc users : well over 10,000,000

    Suppose they need 10 packets to keep a connection alive eache minute. lets say that is possible in 10x40 bytes = 400 bytes per minute. times 10Million =400Mb/min= 6.6Mbyte /sec ~= 50Mbps. Quite a lot if you have to fill it up and use it, but very well possible. (Their ISP will love it)

    From another reply to the same root: ...an analysis of napster showed that well under 10% of users provided the bulk of files (75%+)

    (/10)=5Mbps to lock out a big percentage of the files.

    There are strategies agianst them, called out a lot here: -Block out the IP range of RIAA. --> Very hard for normal users. and they are the big target for this. (HaX0Rs will find the files anyway, i.e. on IRC) -Increase the allowed connections in the P2P software. --> Most users will stick to the defaults. If the RIAA is serious the builds of the software will increase this and build some minor anti-slow-download stuff in. This means the RIAA will need more and more bandwidth. (If you increase the number of allowed connections from 10 to 100 they will need a (1)lot more bandwidth.) -Have more p2p users on your network. This is the most realistic: more users -> more files -> more users -> better armed against a DOS.
    -Have a freenet like client they are more resitent agains this kind of attack. -/. required item: Have them DOS my beowulf cluster... gna gna gna. I am a little supprised freenet is not named here more. Freenet is resistent to the kind of attack thay name here. (isn't it?)

    Well it's just a matter getting on the lists. I'm in the netherlands. They don't as often as some people here say (they say a couple a times a day), but i got called once a week before i moved and the telephone number changed. Now have a unlisted (but not secret) telefoon number.

    Just leave your telephone number everywhere:
    -Listed in the telephone book.
    -Mark all boxes "Give me more information about xxx"
    -Leave your telephone number at all your magazine subscribtions. (Computable.nl i.e. gives me lots of hits.)
    -List your salary as "above average" so they know they can sell you something.

    this should earn you some call's

    Just get their time. They get paid for their time, get their time back!!!!!

    As a regular nerd (this is /.) you can train your conversations. Ask them things. They did call you? ask them difficult questions. this might be a way to learn to talk to people.......

    Also if they talk to you thay do not have time to call me. (!)

    Having no swap will solve this problem also. Having no swap is no problem (even on windows) if you have enough ram. So just buy enough ram.

    however if you need more than 4GB you are n problems:

    64 Kb will be more than enough
    640 Kb will be more than enough
    4 Gig will be more than you will ever use....

    He is saying: lot of device tetecting will be automatically. If you do not need to worry about it it will work. He works for transmeta, a company that makes cpu's that will be/are great for lowpower(embedded) stuff. I think his employer shares your vision.

    The other thing he is saying is that in user_land (translates to = code that runs not in kernel space = his space.) a lot of thing are happening. But note that hailstorm and most of internet are running in user_land. SImply said: he does nto care about it.

    Dcma: That is what i thougth too when i saw the word decryption. I could not think of any funny to say about it. Since i do not know american law that good (hey i am not a american.) I could not say it does not apply to the government.

    I bet they do not have to show how they decrypted it "for obvious reasons"

    A 1.4 GhZ Athalon and a 1.4 GhZ PentiumIV both run at the same internal speed.

    as a true slashdot reader i must point out the PentiumIV runs faster:
    Rapid execution engine:
    The Arithmetic Logic Units (ALU) run at twice the speed of the clock, increasing the overall speed.

    So if intel wants to play the Mhz game it still has some hidden mhz down there.

    Some reasons i think every pc is not a laptop:

    -A laptop is twice as expensive for the same specifications.
    -Laptops are slower. I have seen laptops that were half as fast as a destop pc that got the same kind amount of memory, same cpu, and the desktop got less Mhz. (Ok, it was not word or excell)
    -Most laptops are running on power outlets 80% of the time. battery time is less important for these laptops than you think.
    -PC have bigger screens, and a good mouse and keyboard.
    -A laptop is twice as expensive for the same specifications.

    Lets look at it again, now with a complete system

    800 duron- 305 $ = 0.38 $/Mhz
    900 athlon 309 $ = 0.34 $/Mhz
    1000 athlon 363 $ = 0.36 $/Mhz
    1200 athlon 363 $ = 0.30 $/Mhz
    1300 athlon 403 $ = 0.31 $/Mhz
    1400 athlon 450 $ = 0.32 $/Mhz

    (Note that the systems are not exactly the same, but all including windows tax.) If we look at this the sweet spot it seems the 1.2 Ghz system is money wise the best to buy. And the 1400 just a little bit more expensive but is faster.....
