There are several examples like that. I don't know the origin, but I think it was a newspaper article quite a few years ago (I have it around here.. somewhere).
For example, when Nova (the car) was brought to Spain, it didn't sell very well since Nova (no va) translates into "doesn't go". Ford Pinto didn't fare much better; who would drive a car named "small male appendage"? Nike cought on fire (literally!) when an angry mob informed them of that "air" on one of their products was strikingly similar the arabic "Allah". Branif translated it's airline slogan, "Fly in leather" into Spanish as "Fly naked", and the most horrible error was probably some random baby food manufacturer who began selling their product in South Africa. What they didn't think of was that most products in South Africa are labeled with a picture of the food inside the container (due to illiteracy). Their product was of course labeled with a baby, since that was whom the product was supposed for. Imagine the horror -- tinned babies!?

We have here a group of people who say, "yeah, well, it's not such a big problem." What they are doing is giving up a small part of their privacy. Instead of protesting against this, the have the idea that it's okay to lose a little of your privacy because you get to play a nice game instead. Remember that whenever you lose some of your freedom or your privacy, you always get something in return, some small thing which you get to have, or get to know. What we must do is resist the urge to say "well, it's not so bad after all," and really stand up to tell them that this is unacceptable behaviour and that we would rather not play their games than lose parts of our privacy.

  14. Communities Exist on Are BBS-Like Communities Dead? · · Score: 2

The communities still exist in various forms. They have just moved on from the dial-up form to some other form of communication. There are a lot of BBSes out on the Internet which you can connect to using telnet. There's also an increasing amount of gatheringplaces on the web for people to meet and interact with each other. I don't really prefer the web type interaction, but it certainly seems to attract a lot of the youths today.
But contrary to the BBS world, people don't seem to "advertise" their communities like they used to do earlier. Instead, they kind of keep to themselves and it turns into a very closely connected society.
Also, communities are formed inside of larger groups of people. IRC, AIM, Zephyr, etc are probably good examples of this. When you think of it; this is really the way the world works IRL too. You seldom see advertisements for groups of people (unless they have a specific interest). Instead, you tend to meet new people through friends and family. In IRC, you probably meet friends of your friends and start talking and perhaps that person you speak to will then be your friend too, just like in real life.

  18. Re:From the Debian Free Software Guidelines on Corel Linux Only For 18 and Up · · Score: 2

The DFSG simply says this so that all licenses that does not conform with it will cause programs licensed with that license to be excluded from the Debian main distribution. There is nothing that prevents Corel from making up their own restrictions on who can aquire the software from them. But when someone has gotten the software from them, they must be able to release sourcecode to any GPL och LGPLed software they have sold.

Also, nothing prevents one person from getting their distribution and then giving it away to minors in part or as a whole (provided their distribution doesn't contain any proprietary software, or software with an obnoxious license).
