I always try to get a window as.. gasp.. I like looking out the window! But in a lot of US long haul domestic flights they "encourage" you to shut the window shades in the middle of the day. Generally you can "comply" with this by pulling the shade down 3/4 of the way and still give you some window to look out of. However with the Dreamliner's electronic dimming of the whole window you won't have a chance of balancing your desires with the cabin crew's requests.
And in a bit of conspiracy thinking, I wonder if the cabin crew has a master switch to force the windows to darken when they want - Hello Zaphod's Joo Janta 200 Super-Chromatic Peril Sensitive Sunglasses!
The miles, or the gallons?:-) Also, everyone else, note that liters and kilometers are the same everywhere!;)
Even still litres per 100 km is the better representation than mpg or km per litre as you are better able to compare different fuel consumptions. See Fuel economy in automobiles
Tell self driving car to head to the local big box store and wait in the loading bay until it receives the latest toy that I ordered online
I know Americans are stupid about using their cars for every trip whether it makes sense to drive or not, but sending your car to pick up a box instead of letting the FedEx truck do it is absolutely retarded.
Only if you assume 1) that the FedEx truck is more efficient than your car, and 2) Waiting for the twice daily FedEx delivery cycle is a good use of your time.
But the point is that self driving cars open a whole range of possibilities that can't easily be done if you have to dedicate yourself to driving the car.
I hope they put a switch on them, so you can turn them off, when not in use.
Some countries have outlets that have integrated on/off switches. See AC power plugs and sockets. Having this makes eliminating vampire power usage much easier. The only alternative I can see for the US is to use an outlet that is routed through a light switch (which is common in some rooms in US houses) or to use an external power board with its own isolation switch.
As a terror plot, it's not really very interesting, and the complexities involved go slightly beyond lumping a few scientists in a room with some kit from eBay. The effort-payoff ratio just isn't worth it, like almost all "potential" terror scenarios, but it makes a nice headline, like almost all "potential" terror scenarios.
I agree it s unlikely given the current state of technology, but I can see why an assassination technique that doesn't look like assassination is attractive.
To give an analogy consider a discussion I had years ago about the merits of Judo/Jiu-jitsu vs Tae Kwon Do with my Judo Sensei if you are caught up in an altercation in a bar. Both forms are equally effective in incapacitating your opponent and leaving them lying on the ground. But using a Tae Kwon Do crescent kick to your opponent's head will also get your opponents friends all riled up over the violence you imparted and the insult you implied by obviously beating their friend to a pulp - plus when the police get called they can easily spot the bruises all over your opponents face. However by using a subtle Judo take down combined with some nerve point attacks, your opponent's friends won't be sure what happened - was it an attack, or did your opponent simply slip on the wet floor?? Plus when the police come there is no residual physical damage to your opponent, so they are more likely to believe that he just fell on the floor by himself.
Now compare this with the President being shot in the head vs dying of some virus, and what the likely public reaction will be.
If I was a foreign power wanting to build a genetic weapon to specifically target the President, I would haver been collecting the DNA of all the top echelon politicians well before they came close to running their presidential campaigns. If I can think of this in 10 seconds of reading TFS (not even TFA) then I'm sure that the bad guys have already thought of it - unless you subscribe to the theory that the bad guys are always dumb.
If you look at the link that I included in the article, you'll notice that it links to that very article you describe. I even took the extra minute to search for the link in order to include it in the article:)
I'm the first to mention this, but there there are solid rumors of the "New iPad" getting a revamp with a move to the new lightning connector. The latest iPod touch has the new lightning connector and the iPad mini will have it too. Apple is not shy about ditching technology so it would make sense to ditch the iPad 2 to ensure that all of its mobile lineup carries the lightning connector
WTF is this world coming to if someone can be "shamed and humiliated" because of what type of phone they have?
I got laughed at the other day because I still use a 5 year old Razr flip phone. But it works for me and as I am pretty well always in front of a computer I rarely need any smart phone apps. Plus my yearly phone bill is probably only 2 months worth of a hipsters' data plan.
... whose president, a couple of years ago, surprised some people announcing coldly that he was there exclusively to 'provide receptive brain time to ads', and nothing else...
Nothing surprising about that. TV networks sell Ads, but they buy programs.
Antisemetic? Really? Why are Muslims the only people allowed to be antisemitic. Is that something like blacks calling other blacks derogatory names because "it's ok I'm black" mentality?
I don't know WTF you were reading but it wasn't my post.
So, you are saying that Jews are not the subject of jokes in the west?
No.. I'm saying that the intolerance of anti-Jewish propaganda is so ensconced in in western views that we have a special word for it and there is a very low tolerance for such activities. Why are Jews so special[1] that that they need their own term to describe attacks on them, where as other groups do not have an equivalent term?
But it seems in the present climate that insulting muslims is deemed OK and any objection to that is repulsed with cries of "Free speech!"
Anti-semitism doesn't say Moses raped goats
What do you think would happen to someone who set up a sign outside a synagogue in the US that said "Moses raped goats"? Do you think that calling it "Free speech" would protect them from abuse/being castigate in the media etc? Or people would not see that as anti semitic? (personally I think they'd be beaten to a pulp ASAP before anyone considered any rights)
[1] I say this in an academic sense and not as an attack, but I bet I get people incensed for me even asking that question.
It's not like TV stations are slipping this video in amongst their shows and commercials to trick you into watching it. If you don't like it, don't watch it, and stop trying to force your religious views on others.
The thing I fid interesting is that on one hand you have "don't watch it if you don't want to be offended/Free speech Yaaaaaay!!!!" regarding the anti-muslim propaganda while on the other hand.. you have doctrine for castigating any attacks on another people/religion.. so codified that it even has a well known descriptive name "Antisemitism"
I'm not saying that attacking one group is any worse/better than attacks on another group - however I do believe that a lot of people in western countries would have a different opinion if that film on youtube was anti-Semitic.
(and yes I know there are anti-semetic films on youtube, but they are not as well publicized as the film du jour topic of outrage. IE Videos from the Westboro baptist church )
Are they afraid you might go blind from the sun or something?
Its so the passengers can better enjoy the in-flight entertainment. Especially on planes that don't have seat back monitors.
Even still litres per 100 km is the better representation than mpg or km per litre
Not at all. It's the same information.
I said representation not information. Did you even read the link?

The wall-o-text of TFA doesn't even have pics, and I barely noticed the link to the project

Kinda misses the point of a car. Perhaps not a tractor-trailer, but cars are definitely not all that useful without passengers.
Yes they are.

Considering how dumb our bad guys are, I wouldn't be sure of anything. :)
Can't we have any discussion without mentioning the current Presidential election?!?!?!?

TFA doesn't even link to where the actual report can be found (shame on you Chemical & Engineering News)
The actual report is behind a paywall, but has some summary points Sustainable Development of Algal Biofuels (2012)
If you look at the link that I included in the article, you'll notice that it links to that very article you describe. I even took the extra minute to search for the link in order to include it in the article :)
Too many links in a summary confuse me!

Yes, I know that 'algal' is perfectly good english. But wouldn't 'algae-based' be much more clear to the 99% of the population that are not chemists?
TFA uses both forms .. so which 99% are we confusing again?
I made no comment on what the price will be. My comment was conjecture...
Conjecture would not involve a statement that is a definite comparison.

It seems strange to pay less for a 7" iPad mini than a 3" iPod touch.
You seem to have a time machine handy. So could you tell me next weeks lotto numbers?

Trickle down economics.
Even the innovators aren't participating in it.

I will never honor a pedophile having sex with a nine year old girl after marrying her at six. Truefax.

Muhammad was scum. Do not glorify him.
But then again Lot shagged both his daughters and got them pregnant (actually they shagged him while he was drunk).
I point this out as I bet you can find shitload of similar stuff in ANY religion that you could condemn.
