  1. Simple on Building Quieter Computers · · Score: 2

I haven't heard it myself, but every review has said that it is very quiet. It's a sub $200 liquid cooled case, completely self enclosed. It will quiet down your computer and cool it down a lot as well. The company is Koolance and I first saw a review of it at HardOCP. Nicodemus

  3. I had a problem with @home like this on Contacting Network Admins Of Large Internet Companies? · · Score: 5

At the time I was working for a web site, basicly, and the problem we were having is that @home customers in san francisco couldn't get to the site. After talking to a few of these customers, I had a couple do a traceroute to our server, and somewhere in the middle of @home's network a split horizon (i think that's what they are called) happened. It was where the packet just kept getting bounced between 2 of their routers back and forth until one of them finally dropped it. This only happened to traffic destined for our little network. I called @Home and was escalated to the top tech, who finally believed me. Then I was called back by a sysadmin there who required a lot of convincing. So he finally acknowledged the problem and said that they would get to it. Before I left that company I don't think it had been fixed, but it might have by now. It actually seems like it was a problem with their RIP or IGRP config, so maybe when a router was rebooted it would fix it's tables. Who knows. But the short of it is that I got ahold of a sysadmin and nothing was done. So good luck when you get that far. The journey may still not be over.

  4. 6 years in the making! on 'Rendezvous With Rama' - The Movie · · Score: 2

I first heard about this movie at the end of 97. It was originally intended to come out December 31st, 1999! So this movie has been on hold for 2-3 years now. I don't expect it anytime soon. Which is a shame, as this would probably be my most anticipated movie of all time, and hopefully my most favorite movie of all time. The rama series, all 4 books, has been my favorite since I read the first one 15 years ago when I was like 7 or 8. I've have both the commodore game and the myst-like one. Both sucked at conveying the books, but they both weren't bad. My biggest worry is that the movie will try to target the mainstream audience. Most people (99%) would not get the concepts in the book. They would wonder why the aliens don't start shooting at the humans and attacking earth. I would like it to be as true to the book as you can make a movie, and sell like sh*t in the box office. that would be the best =)

  5. Re:Record-breaking? Nope... on 640 Gig HD in 1U Of Rack Space · · Score: 2

The site contradicts itself so much that there is no way to tell. On one page it says that it holds 4 disks in 1u, on another it says it holds 432 gig in 2u, and on yet another page it says it holds 8 disks in 1u (which would give you your 640 gig with 8 80 gig drives).

Do a little research yourself and see that there is not humanly possible way to understand the product (or products?) from the website. Don't just start with your tyrannical "slashdot sucks" sh*t. You obviously are far from perfect. And if you don't like slashdot, then don't read it. what are you trying to prove anyways?

  6. Tech support nightmare on ICANN Has Approved New TLDs · · Score: 3
I can see it now... 99.999% of clueless newbies think that every address has to start with www, so you KNOW they think that every address has to end with .com. I just know that I'll get calls much like this:

end user: I'm trying to get to the address 'books.shop', but it won't come up, are you down?
me: Not the last time I checked. What exact address are you putting in?
    end user: www.books.shop.com
me: sound of head banging against well worn forehead dimple in desk.

Instead of a domain system, I think that there should be a regulated search engine, with categories, etc, much like yahoo, that people would register their sites in. The domain system has just failed. To get a domain these days, you have to come up with something pretty damn wacky and easily forgettable, so you might as well just give people the IP. Maybe with IPv6 we could just have permanent IPs in much the same way we have permanent domains. Then if we ever move then just have the IP routed differently. This might cause a major headache for routing tables, but maybe something could be worked out. Who knows... I really have no idea =)

I think we can see an example of this same system with phone numbers. Imagine everyone trying to have a unique name instead of a phone number. Sounds ridiculous, right? Everyone has a phone. Well, pretty soon everyone will have a website. But I guess wheels are very hard to stop or even turn once they get rolling. Nic

  13. MP3s still don't beat MiniDisc on New mp3 Hardware · · Score: 1

MiniDiscs still offer the best portable music solution. The only benefit an MP3 player has over Minidisc is that you can tranfer songs faster. With minidisc you have to record in real time. However, with an mp3 player, atleast all the ones out right now, you have very limited storage. blank minidiscs cost about $2-3 and can be rewritten over a million times, and store 74 minutes of stereo (148 mono) per disc. Plus the sound quality is much better. I can't tell the difference betweeen minidisc and CD, but my roommate, who's an audiophile and was the one that introduced me to minidisc, says that they sound about on par with 190k mp3s. The portable players are much cheaper than comparable mp3 players (if by comparable you don't figure in recording time). You can get a player/recorder that's only a little bit bigger than a rio for about $300.

And if you have about $800 lying around you could get a MD-ROM from overseas which will allow you to write to the discs instantly, and store up to 140 megs. Just recording discs overnight or when I've got an hour where I don't need sound on my computer is fine for me.

MP3 player still have a loooooooooooooooong way to go.

I'm still not going to buy another CD anytime soon (except to support bands I really like). I want a rio.
