"It is inescapably censorship under guidelines imposed after the fact by those who are in temporary political power, and so it should be treated as what it is -- a real-world moral and ethical battle with grimly wrongheaded, un-American types who play pick and choose when they define our freedoms of speech and religion as it fits their particular political needs."
I wish people would not bring politics into this. It is not un-American for TV shows to be censored nor is it a Republican or Democrat issue.
Censorship to television has been happening ever since television started, same for radio. See, they use public airwaves, which makes them defferent from other media, like newspapers. Since over the air programing is free to view, it must contain contant that is free to view by all people, childeren encluded. If you want something stronger, pay for it.
Several decades ago, people sleept is seperate beds and you could not say pregnat on the air. So I do not buy the argument that we are censoring more now then before.
Also, Wasn't it the Clinton Administration that wanted to censor talk radio a decade ago? Where was Richard Dryfus then? Now one likes to see there project get censored but lets be fair about it! Its been going on for decades.
Under windows there are several virtual cd/dvd-rom software vendors. VirtualDrive Pro by Farstone works well. I am sure you have something simular under Linux. The only problem is that it does not compress so you will need between 4.7-9.4 gigs (9.4 for a dual layer, right?) per movie. 1 TB would be enough for over 100 movies. This way you get the full dvd experiance since it is just like popping in the disc. All extras and features.
You obviously do not have a grasp of how business works. Apple in the last 4 quarters had a total revenue of about 8 billion. Dell has about 31.8 billion. Dell is only one (albiet the largest) of thousands of companies that sale computers that do not have anything to do with Apple. Apple's earnings are insignificant. They are just a drop in the bucket in the massive PC industry. If apple was just another make of PC's that ran anyone elses software, then they would be just fine. But they are totaly closed off the the rest of the world.
To liken a computer company to a clothing company is crazy. Gap buys there products at extreamly low prices and marks them up several hundred percent. Computers are made up of mostly comidity iteams that can only get so low based on volume pricing. You can not mark up a computer like you can a pair of paints.
My point is that Apple does not have the market share to be able to be an image company and survive. The proof is in the history of the company.
So, how many name brand crap do you own? Basically, what you are saying is that the iPod is a designer brand mp3 player. Kinda like Diesel jeans. Sure they are $169.00 pair of Levis but hey they where designed by "Skilled Diesel Designers" so they are worth the extra $129.00.
If Apple wants to be an image company, like you say, then they will never be significant again. Sure they will have a few hits like the iPod from time to time, but they will continue to stay where they are, a computer for graphic design artists (or artists in general). Graphic design is the lifeblood of Apple, and to those types of people I guess Apple must be an image type company. They already lost academia (how many schools use apple computers vs. 10 years ago) because they where to damn expensive, they can't let the cost:performance ratio get any bigger or they will lose there last sector. Show me any IT buyers out there that would put the "Cool Look" above cost:performance and you can see the problem. Mac's have some features in the OS that make it work better for publishing and graphic design, but it is only time until this is standard in an MS OS. When that happens, Apple will be finished. It isn't hard to argue the fact the Microsoft is basically letting Apple stay alive so that the can show that they do have a competitor. When they now longer need to do this, Apple will be gone.
But what good does it do? Remember BOB? Wasnt that all based on user-acceptance and focus groups. I could go on with a list of ms bombs that vanashed but i'll save bandwidth
I have sprint broadband at work where we use a linux box to firewall and ipmasq 8 window boxes to the net. the thing i hate about sprint BB is that the latancy is terrible. I get on average 250+ ms to my first router outside my office and its typical to get at least 6% packet loss. It get worse at peak times. I have seen 450+ ms and over 10% packet loss to my first router. They say cause ping is low priority. BS! Oh and they dont support streaming. So if you cant get a real audio or mp3 stream to work cause your superfast connection cant keep a constant 40kbit/sec stream going, tuff cookies!
Glade i have Cox @home at home. @home is evil but its better then sprint!
since no one is going to see it now, its the best movie to take your girlfriend when you dont really want to see a movie and just want to do some back row love.
So everyone thinks this is perfect, except perhaps PETA and militant vegans. Protests at the fuel pump? Red paint being tossed at motorists?
