"The Practice of System and Network Administration" by Limoncelli, Hogan and Chalup has a great "read this first" chapter on organising yourself such that your "customers" are (reasonably) happy and you remain sane. It looks like in the second edition this has moved to chapter 2.
The rest of the book is great too, and I'd suggest your sanity is probably worth at _least_ $44.75 at Amazon.

I was pretty impressed with all the Plan 9 source code I looked at.
As to higher level language support, as I recall it was almost no trouble to get the Python interpreter compiled under Plan 9 2nd ed.
Well, the folks at Bell Labs have a fair bit of experience writing C compilers ;-)
I think our mob would be quite happy to hire all of the survivors of this course that seem to be easy to get along with.
