  1. Re:But does it extend battery? on Nokia: the Sun Can't Charge Your Phone · · Score: 3, Informative

    Unfortunately, letting the phone sit on the dash of your car while
    charging causes it to heat up, significantly reducuing the life
    of your lithium battery. A better choice is to use an external

    Most of the AC motors driving significant loads (i.e. not clocks), are induction motors and are going to run with some amount of slip, up to several percent, depending on line frequency, voltage, load and design. While you can expect some change in speed when the frequency varies, it is not going to be linear nor easily predictable.

    And for the record, 3Hz variation in frequency is huge. Try 1/10 that amount for a really bad system.

    out there that can figure this out. What this means for us, the grope option will soon go away and we will have to visit
    the x-ray machine if we want to fly.

    I find it incredible that poll after poll finds "most" americans are not bothered by the full body x-ray machines. Is the news
    media lying to us or is the slashdot crowd just more upset over this than the average american?

  11. Re:They are loosely related on 80% Improvement In Solar Cell Efficiency · · Score: 1

    Okay, take an "average" home with 1500 Sq=Ft of living space. Slightly more than
    that is available for roof area (counting Garage, eves, porches, etc) so if you
    assume 1600 Sq-Ft of roof ==> just shy of 150 sq-meters.

    Typical summer solar input is around 1000 W/M^2, but we need to account for latitude
    (about 80%) and roof slope (~70%) so usable energy input is 560 W/m^2. Factor in
    typical conversion efficiency (20%) and you end up with 112 W/M^2. Cover the whole
    roof and that gives you a solar maximum of >16 KW, more than enough to power a home.
    So I will agree with the statement, its $/watt that is important, not raw efficiency.
