While not as arbitrarily against the moderate use of 'slippery slope' as some of my more esteemed/. Colleagues, your example is the equivalent of the literary crutch that profanity is for an inarticulate materal copulator.
Full discloser: I am armed at home. Always. Please publish this information for all to see. Much as my dogs make my home a less ideal target than my cat-loving neighbor, this revelation is further deterrent to the "takers".
This. And don't kid yourselves, the ubiquity of high fructose corn syrup as Big Food's sweetener of choice is another negative fallout from these insane corn subsidies.
The moral of the story is YMMV. If you limit intake of these "modern processed foods", limit or eliminate (shudder) alcohol consumption, eat nothing with added sweeteners, and eat healthy, low calorie foods that do the best job of filling you up, your body's biochemistry will eventually revert to a healthier system that makes keeping the weight off easier. Help yourself out by keeping only healthy things around the home and office to eat. They will taste better the hungrier you become. It is much more difficult for some than others, and there is no substitute for willpower.
Yeah, in a Utopian World good deeds would be rewarded, bad folks would be remorseful while heartily accepting their punishment, and there would be a benevolent god rewarding life's protagonists with eternal life. As Alan Jackson has been known to croon, "Here In The Real World", the most important predictor of future business success in an utter lack of conscience.
Having come to think of our Japanese brothers as a modern, civilized, and economic 1st World power, I find this quite disturbing. I have an idea where the Chinese are on human rights, and I remember the caning in Singapore of the young American vandal, but I suppose I had an idea the Japanese were somehow closer to the American or European personal freedoms ideal.
I keep hearing THIS solution over and over... I ain't buying it. I think this has caught fire with the folks who wish to blame anyone and anything except the free access to firearms. There are some assholes you cannot fix. There are some idiots you cannot fix. There are some folks one lab accident away from being a super-villain. And there are some folks who are going to miss a hug one day and implement their own personal doomsday plan. Reckon some readily available health care would've fixed Charles Manson?
A preemptive strike against First Person Shooter Games, Jack Reacher, Family Guy and American Dad..... oh, and the return of primitive mythology-as-fact teaching in the schools. Nice. Yup, that'll fix it.
While it is in the government's interest to sidestep those pesky ten amendments wherever and whenever possible, it is certainly in the citizen's interest to allow their removal only from his cold, dead hand. The Supreme Court's ruling means all is not lost. It's not that law enforcement would be entirely reluctant to keep using these "formidable weapons against terror & drugs", since I'm certain some of them learned ethics from Horatio Cain and Andy Sipowitz, but at least they are aware what they're doing is without the rubber stamp of approval.
Freedom of speech does not imply freedom from the consequences of one's speech...for instance, yelling "faggots" at a group of bikers because you thought it was a cute joke on Southpark, or telling your wife what you really think about her hot friend. Fox and the rest of Broadcast News have gone the way of dead tree editorializing: there is bias, spin, sketchy fact-checking, and occasionally some outright fabrication. I watch Soledad in the morning on CNN, but it's still clear to me where her personal political beliefs lie on the spectrum. "Scooping" unconfirmed facts could well result in a libel suit, although in this case I'll wager the Connectinut's brother will shy from the spotlight for a minute. The essential thing is that no speech, which hurts nothing but feelings, can ever be banned.
Agreed...and we lived on a ranch near the Mexican border in south Texas. I have heard folks say they were in the middle of nowhere, but this outfit was as far removed from emergency services as I would imagine you could be outside of some of our Aussie brothers. Thirteen miles of bad (5 mph) road to the highway, and hitting the highway meant you were still two hours from Del Rio. Illegal border crossing emigres came by the house every week or two, We had hunting rifles and shotguns. There was never a need for anything else.
As per a wise poster in a previous thread, the guns are force-multipliers. Pipe bombs require a bit of mechanical skill and some additional time to build, meaning there's a chance someone could've hugged the Connectinut and altered his path. The guns were too readily available to him at a moment when he was prepared to watch the world burn.
We all judge, and each and every decision we make is colored by individual upbringing, education, belief set, advantage, prejudice, and even some logic. Perfect impartiality is a lofty enough goal, but incredibly difficult to achieve. The SCOTUS heard the same issue in Brown vs Board of Education as they did in Plessey vs. Ferguson...but the era and Justices were different. There are times when it is much more convenient for governmental agencies to bypass those first ten amendments. There are also times when the War on Drugs, the War on Terror, and the War on Ridiculous Churches offer tempting opportunities to diminish inalienable rights WITH the tacit permission of the rights-holders. 99%+ of the Sapiens who've ever lived on this rock do not enjoy the freedoms North Americans, Europeans, and Auszealanders are only to busy to notice slipping away from them.
Perhaps you believe you can make the distinction with your own set of values what is free speech and what is hate speech. Perhaps you are a very wise man and you are correct. That would place you in the tiniest minority of all mankind, but let's run with that tenet for the time being. Do you suppose the government bureaucrat, police captain, or 20-year-old beat cop who will ACTUALLY be making the call in real life can be trusted to make that distinction? Hateful free speech, no matter how distasteful, that hurts nothing but feelings must be protected under the rule of law. Personal freedoms are protected not by a major war every generation, but by resisting government's daily attempt to chip away at them. "the slippery slope is an idea that only works in a world where nobody can think and identify different topics"....you have just perfectly described those folks most likely to be making the distinction for us.
"First they came for the communists..." Governments will take your free speech first from the most hateful among us: the hateful, the racist, the pedobears....the worst of us will be restricted first until more forms of free speech are placed on the verbotsliste.
"Because some men aren't looking for anything logical like money. They can't be bought, bullied, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn." There are, unfortunately, bad things that can never be legislated against by any measure of good intentions. Love your sig.

ACs?

So I'll never get to nap on the highway because the personal injury lawyers have already won? That sucks like Kirby,
Crafty. Well done.

That, and it's relatively uncommon.
Very insightful link. Ninety minutes well spent. The comparisons between the liver's breakdown of HFCS and ethanol were a bummer though.

I opened an account...Five digit UIDs are still available...

This, Notoriety matters to the super-villain.

You sir, are absolutely right. It is with an extremely low success rate that you can stop a man on a suicide mission.

I was mortally afraid all that wisdom would be lost forever. Sheesh...
