I like eBooks, and have read many on my iPaq. I only download free books, so I haven't experienced the so called "lock out". I think the best part is that the iPaq has a backlight, which means I can read in what is otherwise a dark room....
At my company, we are paid a bonus 5 hours a week for carrying the pager (even if we are not paged). If we are paged, we can claim the time spent on the call plus an hour bonus if it was not durring business hours. We have a weekly rotation, currently between 4 people -- so only once a month. Not to bad.
I never play with the priorities in Windows. The few times we have here at work, the process takes control of the machine and you can't do anything (since it has the highest priority).
PS. It is a PII-233 where it consumes 100%, also using Winamp. Maybe I just need a new version.
I still have DeCSS up on my site, and it isn't just a link. Since Canada doesn't have the DMCA the software is not illegal here....Which means linking to it is definately not illegal.
When I installed it, the entire install took 15 minutes. Then I was up and running and connected to the net (auto detected my card). For the network setup, I just had to punch in my IP address.
Other than the pathetic browser, QNX is the best OS I've used in the long time.
My standard test is to run an MP3 then try doing something. On windows, it uses 100% CPU so even scrolling in the web browser causes it to skip. On Linux it also uses 100% CPU, but I can scroll without skipping. Opening an archive causes it to skip however.
On QNX, I had to MP3s playing, was browsing, and opening an archive in the background and it peaked at 60% CPU! Not bad.....
In Canada, this would be illegal. They would have to go to court first before they would be able to give out any of my personal information, otherwise I could sue THEM.
I'm on @home and the only restriction I have is the no servers. I have no cap. (I would be screwed if I did with all the ISO's I download).
The @home service has been so slow lately however that I am switching to DSL where I CAN run servers, but a 5 GB cap if I don't use the proxy (unlimited otherwise). Besides, it's only +$10 per extra gig.....
I used to work in a store similiar to K-mart (Zellers - actually we bought most of the K-marts in Canada). While it is great for K-mart to say this, it is unlikely to be enforced in the stores.
Can you picture a 15 year old carding another 15 year old? Because that is what works in these stores...kids working part-time jobs. I know I never would have bothered.
How can the DMCA apply? 2600 didn't write the program. I don't remember anything in the DMCA that made hyperlinks illegal. The author is not American and hence is not bound by the DMCA.
I find this rather shaky, but the American legal system is strange to begin with. (How can you be acquited of murder, yet be found guilty in a civil suit?)
I run both. Open Server 5 is the only 'real' unix that supports my SCSI card. I also use UnixWare 7. I think my favourite thing about SCO is the SCOAdmin tool (written in Visual TCL).
While Caldera isn't my favourite distribution, it is acceptable for a workstation.

X Windows Must Die!

I agree....I may have only been using X-Windows for 8 years, but I love it!
X-Windows and CDE are probably the two biggest factors of my moving to Unix.
I just don't see the problems they are describing with respect to males and females in the technology industry. In school, while there are more men, there are still a lot of women (in Computer Science).
At work, it is even more equal. I work in the IT department for a large insurance company and almost half are women. The head of the IT division is a woman. (Actually all of my bosses from team leader to manager to VP are all women).
Also my girl friend is in Computer Science, and has never had a problem finding technical jobs. The way I see it, if a woman does not work in technology, it is because she doesn't want to, not because she can't.
I agree. I've lived in Toronto my entire life (which is only 24, but still). While some people may claim it is expensive to live compared to other locations like Ottawa or Regina, but I know that I couldn't live in such a place. I need the life of a big city.
I've had friends that have worked all over, but most of them come back to Toronto.
I had a similar problem...I ordered something FREE from IBM, and about a month later received a bill from a brokerage firm for $40.
The best part is this fee was for the "priviledge" of them intercepting my mail and delaying delivery. (They claim to have speeded it through customs.) I did not ask for this "service".
I have never had a background check or a drug test. Up here in Canada, I don't have to tell them anything that may have me discriminated against (age, race, criminal history).
The only time they can perform a background check is if it is pertinent to the job, such as when working with children.
I have one of these phones also. While there is nothing I can do about text messages (which are either from the Fido web site or other Fido user's phones), I can filter the email. The email settings allow me to only allow certain times, users, or even subjects to be allowed through. I don't have this enabled right now, but if I start getting spammed I will.
I think his views are a bit extreme, but he is free to have them...
My definition of Open Source is if I get the source, it is open. For Free software it is even easier. If I don't have to pay for it, it is free. Does it matter what the license says? Not really. For most of the restictions, I wouldn't be doing that anyway.

Funny....You don't even have to have a job to get a credit card in Canada. All you have to do is go to school (University or College).
Plus, age doesn't matter. If you aren't in school get someone to co-sign. If you are in school, they don't care if you are 16.
