No way would I ever run an unsecured WLAN. What if someone decides to start carding stuff, hacking, packeting, or otherwise being a jerk off your connection? Try explaining that one to the feds.

A friend of mine and I actually ran a pirate station out his house for a week over spring break about 10 years ago. Despite what some people are saying on the list, you do not neet 50 to 100kW to cover a good area. In fact we covered most of our town on 25W and a j-pole antenna mounted at about 35ft on our antenna tower.
There's only one place I can think of off the top of my head to go for decent quality broadcast transmitters. That's Progressive Concepts (http://www.progressive-concepts.com). They have a decent selection of transmitters, stereo generators, amps, and a whole buch of other useful stuff for the FM broadcast band. It's been a while since I looked at their catalog but I vaguely remember that most of their equipment is for export only if you do not have a license. The hardest part of the whole process will be getting the license, not the equipment.
I'm part of the management team for a major steel producer that is currently in bankruptcy. Although I haven't heard of any 'base' pay-cuts yet, our management workforce has seen roughly a 40-50% decrease (aka - fired) over the past 18 months. There have been quite a few job combinations as well as things like taking away our pay for overtime and giving us "comp" days, and 401K matching is also out the window.
They've also broken some contracts/agreements with the union employees by laying some of the junior people off for several weeks and so forth.
Unfortunately it seems the quickest/easiest way to save money is to fire people or cut their pay. On a good note, our company is being generous to those they have let go from the management workforce. Apparently the severance package is one months pay plus pay for any vacation time you have remaining for the year. They also have hired a company to give seminars on how to write resumes and job searching skills in general for those that got let go.
One application I could think of would be space travel. If you have a couple guys on a space station a few hundred miles above the earth and one needs an emergency medical procedure this could really come in handy. I don't know if this would work out for someone on a deep space mission though as the latency might be too great.
Another application could be a cruise ship, battle ship, or submarine. Could have an expert perform an emergency procedure remotely without having to disrupt the ship operations, or having to airlift the patient.
If this could be made portable, it could also prove useful on the battlefield if you have a wounded soldier in need of a life-saving specialist.
I think it'll be great if/when they get most governmental services online. I think making it quick and easy to do stuff like vote in presedential or local government elections would definately be a positive thing. Politicians could also easily take polls on certain issues to help determine public opinion on the topic, which may help in determining what type of laws to pass, how they should be written, etc. etc. I wonder if they will ever get this far or will people be too afraid that the system could be hacked or somehow exploited? Seems though that it could be much more secure than the system we have in place now.
Here in Indiana they have quite a few online services available. I have renewed my car registration and paid for my plates online for the past two years. A few clicks of the mouse and my plates are in the mailbox in a week.
This could prove to be very useful in figuring out how to build a flying robot that mimics a real bird. You could fly one of these things behind enemy lines, undetected, and spy on damn near anything you want as close as you want. Pretty far off in the future yet but a definate possibility.
Might be kinda hard to explain a plexiglass box filled with electronics when you drive into the parking garage of a large building and secuity finds it in the trunk!

Good luck!
