  1. Why must shuffle be truly random? on The Perception of 'Random' on the iPod · · Score: 1

How about a shuffle that actually does what I want: play all the songs in the library (or playlist) just one time each in a random order? Yah, sure, I can manually sort my playlist... but that's only good for one pass.

BTW, I think the confirmation bias being linked to over and over and over again is confirmation that those chuckleheads are biased towards being theoretically correct about random-approximating procedures in automata... instead of focusing on what the users actually want.

  2. Anecdotally, this is already done... on Yahoo and Microsoft to Merge Instant Messengers · · Score: 1

At my workplace, we're using the Microsoft Office Communicator (MOC) as an internal IM client primarily to prevent company confidential info from being sent across the 'Net in the clear and stored on someone else's (AOL, Yahoo!, MSN, etc) server.

The fun thing is, there's an optional module that we can elect to install which allows it to contact AOL, Yahoo!, and MSN users directly. Even better, it does not require you to first establish accounts on those services... merely enter in your AOL buddy's name and it will establish an AOL account for you.

For us /.'rs, the only drawback I see if that it's a little too automatic... I cannot specify what I want my AOL screenname to be... it simply uses my company email address.

Anyway, the point is it appears that MS has already merged with their IM tech with AOL, Yahoo!, and of course, MSN.

re: "If this ever happens to you do not ever attempt to turn the ignition all the way off... In most cases you will lose both your power steering and your power braking. Make sure that you keep it at least on partially as most cars will not lose total power this way."

The vast majority of power-assisted steering and brakes on cars are powered by hydraulic systems which get their power from the engine... while it's running.
Turning off the engine, even while leaving the auxiliary power on won't help a bit.

One of the very newest trends in cars is to power brakes and steering electrically. There are a couple of production models with this capability, although engineers are still working on the way they feel. For those, I'd be curious to know if they can still operate off aux power.

  5. What happens when hobbits get home? on LoTR RoTK Extended Edition Specs Released · · Score: 1

In the LOTR ROTK book, the hobbits return home to Hobbiton only to find it mastered by Saruman, Wormtongue, and their scoundrels. The battle-hardened hobbits set to and clear out the vermin in no time. They've grown in wisdom and experience. In a lot of ways, this helps put a successful close on an important part of their individual life journeys.

Now, some of you might remember that Christopher Lee's Saruman character was completely cut from the ROTK film. Apparently, a surprise to him at the time.

Has anyone else seen whether those deleted scenes made their way into this superfly, extended, crazy, huge DVD box set-a-rama?

  6. How'd Indianapolis make the Top 100???? on Persuading A City To Go Wireless? · · Score: 1

I fly to Indy a lot. Was just there a couple of days ago. Will be back this week. No where in the Indianapolis International Airport is there a wi-fi hotspot. Not even the Starbucks will let you plug in (good luck finding even a power outlet in there).

  7. Re:What all the above posters/repliers missed... on Mac Trojan Horse Disguised as Word 2004 · · Score: 1

Your're correct. But I believe the previous posters were taking the reason for *your* reason into account already.

You have to ask yourself, "Why does the installer of an application need the admin to authenticate?"

The answer is, "To modify directories and files."

The previous posters were correct. The user is already authenticated and it would be a pain to have to provide your password to modify each and every doc, photo, iTune, folder, etc.

  8. My CS Math courses on Math And The Computer Science Major · · Score: 1

    Graduated in '96.

Required to have Calc I, II, and III. Already had Diff Eq on top of that b/c I was originally an engineering major.

A Numerical Methods course was very enlightening in explaining how to accomodate rounding/precision problems and other ephemera. Unfortunately, all programming examples relied on coding Calculus equations, which was a bit overkill.

Discrete Math also very interesting from a Von Neuman perspective.

And, of course, the requisite stats course.

Summary: The Calculus seems like it'll kill ya though... it certainly seems overkill to me... and I now work for a statistical s/w company.

  9. Re:Article has wrong focus on RFID Will Stop Terrorists? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Yah... illegal search & seizure and all that jazz.

Think how cool it would be for the individual though. You could instantaneously inventory your belongings. Lost your keys... just whistle up the RFID embedded in your keychain.

What I'd like to see is a way to uniquely setup "ownership" of RFIDs. Like you enter your uid and pwd into a scanner, and all of "your" RFIDs in range reply.
