But if your sister tried to start installing a program or tried to add a printer, look out!
I'm following this interesting thread and would like to point out that for RedHat 7.1, installing my HP Deskjet was as easy as plugging it in (USB) and running the printtool program. I can't remember if it detected the model for me or if I selected the model from a list. Either way, it was very simple and worked correctly the first time.
2) The biggest problem with LCD touchpads (this one included) is the absolute lack of tactile feedback. To know which button you are about to press (and to make sure you only hit one) you have to look at the controler. That is time that you spend not looking at the action on the computer screen. Bad idea in a firefight.
Funny... I never heard anybody on Star Trek: the Next Generation complain about this. Now we will finally be able to put all those lousy LCARS themes to a good use!!
Another thing that would frustrate gamers is if the controller moved the positions of things around as you selected different weapons/missions/whatever. Microsoft invented the non-intuitive GUI where dialog buttons and menus pop up anywhere and float around seemingly at random. Many companies have since adapted this genius design strategy (note: sarcasm). I can just imagine a controller where the grenade button for over-under-machine-gun is in a different spot on the controller than the grenade button for the tank/vehicle/whatever-else.
I believe in custom controls, where you could place the controls on the touch-screen however you want, but I'm sure that too many games would break the useability by changing the controls too much throughout the game.
The story was so-so, but the eye candy was fabulous."
Hehe. Funny.
Katz: "Why is it always in a ruined Manhattan? "
It's not always Manhattan. Red Dawn and Robotech both don't take place in Manhattan. I can name more.
Finaly, Katz describes the characters as emotionless and plastic. I read somewhere that visually, CG animations will be able to replace characters in about 5 years, but the voices are no where near replacing an actors voice. I disagree. I think that the subtleties of human expression (facial, body language, etc.) are vastly more complex than those in the voice.
If this is true, than we have a long time to wait until we have realistic animated actors with both voice and appearance.
The police wouldn't arrive. Instead, Marvin would convince the robber to blow up the supports for the ground beneath his feet. Then the hallway would give way and the robber would plummet into the basement. When the police arrived, the entire building would be missing, but as long as our hero exits via the office window, then all is well.
Do you think that this would prevent me from sneaking up to the roof of the engineering building?
I doubt that it could climb the ladders into the utility rooms.
Regarding your comment, Rackemup, how exactly is a laser beam a weapon system? I've never seen a laser beam used as a weapon. Perhaps one could use a laser beam for some sort of weapon guidance, but nothing energy based.
Big Whoop about the robot thing. Michigan State University's engineering building has had a robot touring it's halls since I started going there (1995). Of course it's better now and moves around by itself. I don't think it had the job of security, but it was cool, especially since it runs linux!
Anywho, I have to leave for work now. The grammar nazi has a busy day ahead of him.
I guess you're right. I didn't even realize it, since you can switch to the function keys and pad so easily.
As far as the whole sun type 3 thing, it isn't too challenging to remap keys, although after needing to remap the keys with every fresh Linux install, I've just learned to deal with the control key where it's at. I actually like it next to the 'a' better than down low.
There's not much to that preview besides the screenshots! I was hoping for more of a storyline preview.
Did anyone else notice that all of the Pictures were taken with Mac OS 9.n? Does this mean that the game will run slow as it is being emulated on my new laptop (OS X)?
Actually, I didn't think that Angeline Jolie did a good British accent at all.
As far as the padded bra and unrealistic figure and poses (i.e, the way she walks, the way she stands) go, it seems very similar to her unrealistic video game figure/stance/poses. Hmm. Do you think the director did this on purpose???
As the grammar nazi, I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't point out the following sentence in Katz's review...
The movie comes closer to the experience of playing the game than watching a film.
Ugh? Thanks Jon. One should strive towards proper grammar *and* sentences that make sense.
2 weeks ago (after one of Katz's poorer reviews) I wrote a comment to counter what Katz was going to say. He surprised me by stating basically what I wrote in his review. I guess it only applies to CmdrTaco's review since I agree with Katz. Note, I wrote the following without seeing the movie. Please substitute Katz with CmdrTaco wherever applicable...
I thought I could outguess Katz, but he surprised me. CmdrTaco fell for it, however so the following applies to him.
One dimensional characters, lousy acting, plot full of holes? What do you expect? After all, the movie is based upon a video game! Did you think that the video game 'Tomb Raider' is a premis for a great literary work?
There were three reasons that I will see Tomb Raider, they are: 1. Hot main character. While she admittadly isn't *that* hot, I am interested in seeing how Hollywood will further alter my idea of the perfect female figure. 2. Video game action. I'm not talking about Crouching Tiger choreography, rather fun action that uses lots of props and weapons. 3. Cheesy simple storyline that I don't have to think much to grasp. I'm seeing the movie for fun! I enjoy many films with great storylines that leave me thinking, but it's not neccesary to make a movie fun. I should have Requem for a Dream by that 16th, and a movie like that *needs* a light-fun movie to go with it.
I have a feeling that I won't be dissapointed when I see Tomb Raider. I'm sure that I've already gotten most of the above 3 things from the Lara Croft Pepsi commercials, so I'm *very* sure that I won't be dissappointed when the movie comes out.
Oh yeah, it's June 6, I'm writing this because I know what the movie will be like and I know how Katz will respond to it already.
Don't forget to s/Katz/CmdrTaco/g; and I should have realized that there would be Matrix references in the review. I've yet to see an action movie review on/. without a reference to the Matrix.
For further information, I suggest Web Application Development with PHP 4.0 (Ratschiller and Gerken)
It assumes basic knowledge of PHP, and focuses on Web application developmnent. Problems with cross-platform compatibility. Large scale V. small scale projects. Planning, customizing the Zend engine. I've read about 1/2 of it and I think it's a very good book. From what I've read, this book might be exactly what you are looking for.
I sort of disagree with your last comment, nels_tomlinson...
you will really need a Ph.D in an appropriate field if you want anyone important (like a judge or a bureaucrat) to take you seriously. The years that it would take to learn to do valid analysis could probably be better spent, unless you want to start a new career.
Much scientific research is done as a hobby or side-note by many people. Although, the expensive kinds of research (nuclear physics?) is usually reserved for PhDs and other likely-to-be-funded types, much is done at a lower level by people as a hobby.
For some examples, take a look at Chaos theory and fractals. Many chaotic atractors as well as new fractal patterns and properties have been discovered by people who don't have PhDs in mathematics/physics/sciences. Afterall, Lorenz was a weather analyst.
Galerkan was an engineer that had a few rules-of-thumb for analysing structure problems. This became the known in numerical analysis as Galerkan's Method.
The era where scholars were jack-of-all-trades is admittedly over, but that doesn't prevent significant findings from cropping up from non-specialists.
I don't think that it came accross in my earlier posts. I *love* the idea of what you are doing. I'm working on a webbot, so maybe it will be easy for me to go and get the data again. I'll send you the files if that is the case.
I'm not saying that you are incompetent or anything. I happen to work on these sorts of things for a living, that's why I know about it. I'm sure that it would be the same with you.
For now, I will keep in mind that there is data on the RIAA website, and maybe I'll be able to retrieve it. You are doing the community a service by compiling this data and creating the website. I hope that I will be able to contribute and help you out.
Of course... I'll never admit to being the grammar nazi. I'll happen along and offer help without mentioning any of my/. posts.
You have a valid point. However, I did look at the data on the RIAA page(even before I posted my first comment). Short of writing a web-bot to retrieve and format the data, I'm not going to sit and manually do it. I was under the impression that this guy was doing that work for us so that we could further analyse the datasets. (i.e. he mentions Perl readable a couple times) Somewhere in the process he makes his own calculations that, consequently, remove information from the data.
If one of the goals of his website is to provide data for others to analyse, then he should do just that.
My job is doing analysis using variations on Kohonen Self-organizing-maps and other unsupervised classifications techniques. We do classification and data-mining all many different types of data. I read this article and immediately thought I might be able to use the data to try and find some of the correlations mentioned in the article. Unfortunately, the data doesn't contain enough information. The only files that I saw had some magical number which is the the sum of each product platinum times the number of years since the album came out. The unsupervised learning algorithms should determine the calculated numbers, not a person. Where are the original numbers?
If the evergreen project wants any serious analysis to be done with this data, then they need to include the raw, initial data. This would be the year of each platinum album, the year of the record release, and any other relevant or irrelevant data. Please re-release these files with the original data so that a thourough analysis can be done.
I'd be happy to test out a few algorithms on the data.
I noticed only trolls were replying to this article, but I wanted to say that I'm glad that this is an article. I tried using mod_mp3 about a month ago, but gave up due to a lack of documentation.
I'm looking forward to being able to finally using mod_mp3 to listen to my home music while I am at work.
I also didn't think that it was fair that such an informative article that had only troll posts, whence I added my own.
You can figure out what kind of passwords that you wish to implement from this table. Remember that one order of magnitude is a huge difference, thus 8 length ASCII characters are *far* more secure than anything else.
offtopic rant... Rob, making tables on slashdot sux. You have to make it easier to do tables.

and a run-away link?
Sheesh Michael, You'd think that Preview button is put into Slashcode for a reason.
Hehe. Funny.

I've noticed happy hacker clones at the computer store in my home town.

And now for some haiku...

I might watch this show.
