I thought that the way Autorun works is that the OS looks for a file called autorun.inf in the root directory on the disc/removable device and then further launches whatever executable/splashscreen/icon etc...
Doesn't seem like any special whiz bang stuff going on.
Well that's when the dreaded "RTFM" part comes in. I mean, there are documentation and Hardware Compatibility Lists, but the whiners and complainers don't read them or look for them. Much easier to bitch 'n moan.
Actually in addition to what you're saying, many consumer grade soundcards, and not to mention just about all professional audio cards have SP/DIF Input and Output jacks (either coaxial or TOSLINK) which would allow for a purely digital feed to be sent in and out and hence be recorded.

Dunno about elsewhere but,here in the St. Louis area, Earthlink is partnered with Charter Communications' Charter Pipline cable internet service.
