I agree, Marathon simply blew all other FPS games away with it's plot. Dealing with Durandal as he was sometimes helpful, sometimes manipulative, sometimes insane was the best overall gameplay experience I've had in a FPS by far.
Marathon was also a leader in the technology, being the first FPS I ever saw with mouselook. Although it was more limited than what is seen now, it totally spoiled me to the point that I could never bring myself to play Doom seriously. Only after Quake and Duke included mouselook on the PC did I consider another FPS seriously.
