    Engaging totalitarian governments with market forces is a much preferred solution than to engage them with armed forces; however, there is always the risk of just giving them more sophisticated means to strike back at you with.

    What is going to happen is that China is going to fully modernize its military in the next 10-20 years and either they collapse like the Soviet Union ( unlikely ) or they take Taiwan and start imposing their view of geopolitics with guns, tanks, planes and subs MADE IN CHINA.

    I'm not talking about R&D or systems that do not require low margins of error for safety purposes. I'm talking about critical systems in things that either support life or could possible if programmed incorrectly take it.

    This is why we need a Professional Engineering certificate for 'Software Engineers' and a degree that prepare them for it.

    There is no reason why I as a mechanical engineer should have to get certified to work on simple things like bridge refits, HVAC and the like and a software engineer/programmer/code monkey with no required qualifications can program anything up to and including life support, emergency dispatch and weapon systems.

    Parent is not a troll. I too have had some relatively expensive wine and the difference between $10 to $20 is far greater than the difference between $20 and $200 and most wine/food magazines+blogs will agree.

    The only time I have ended up drinking really expensive wine is when I'm being wined and dined by a sales droid. I've never dated anyone who thought it was important to drink any bottle over $20, but I would be interested to know of people who have.

    What is " FAIL!!! " are you 15 ? This is Slashdot, not 4chan. A statistic cannot be vacuous, I don't think that word means what you think it means. Along with 3200 people on death row and an increase of 200-300 per year, just because they are not executing them now does not mean they are not part of the capital punishment system. My point was not just the moral aspect, but the financial one as well. Why spend 10 million dollars on incarcerating and executing a rapist/murder when the state will not give a dime to the victims of those crimes?

    We execute more people than 90% of the countries that practice capital punishment, I would hardly call that " not many ".

    It costs 2 million to 10 million dollars to execute someone in the US.

    The efficacy of capital punishment in any age especially the modern one is questionable at best and immoral at worst.

    Well we would not need such a vigorous anti-capital punishment faction if this country would get in line with the rest of the democratic world.

    In Portland recently a man who was suicidal was shot in the back with an assault rifle, the officer is still on the force. We need laws requiring police to wear video and audio surveillance and for grand juries not DAs choose when to prosecute police.

    You want to send people to the gas chambers for possessing child porn, while albeit a popular opinion it is a naive and dangerous one. Why, well it is a slippery slope from one sex crime to another sex crime and from sex crimes to anything else the populace chooses to label immoral. There is a reason why even African countries that make homosexuality illegal have expressed shock at Uganda attempting to make it a capital crime.

    We are not a " by product " of your generation, thank you. We would have far less debt if tuition had not increased at 10-20x inflation throughout the 1990's because most of us did not buy McMansions we will never be able to pay off. We work less hours and demand better pay because we like to enjoy life while we are living and we are not going to see a pension plan and neither are you, unless you are 60+. We are healthier because we choose to be, there are a lot of reasons why American seniors cost 2-3x the amount that British or Canadian seniors cost. 20% of all 60+ year olds in the US have Type II diabetes, whereas in Europe it is less than 10% for the same age group, in some countries less than 5%.

    I would not roll out of bed for less than 40 an hour and I only work 6 months a year.

    NHS has been running for over 50 years and looks to remain solvent for another 20 at least. Medicare will be lucky to get through 2019.

    Um, I did. I'm 32 years old. I have a 1200 ft^2 house that will be paid for next year. My parents had a 3000 ft^2 house that they never finished paying off. I have less than 12,000 left on my student loan debt. My dad finished paying off his student loans in his early 40's. So your generalization is not working, learn to internet.

    Good luck on getting them to pay the bills because most of them deny over half of the claims if not more. Go Google your provider, I'll wait here.

    I have heard nothing but bad things about catastrophic insurance from college students I know who used it to register for classes and you should pry read your policy right now to see if you can even litigate them if they deny you coverage, I doubt it. Who is going to end up paying your health care costs if you get sick? Oh yeah, that's right everyone but you. You are no better than the welfare moms you bitch about.

    Your paranoid delusions about this being some left-wing conspiracy to force you into some politically correct lifestyle would be funny if it was not so pitiful.

    Greatest Generation and Baby Boomer's are costing 10k's to 100k's of thousands of dollars of year in health care costs and you blame this generation? Who smokes less, drinks less and is in overall better health than the three previous generations? Give me a break. My Uncle who worked maybe 10 years of his adult life started receiving Medicare last year and he is already up to half a million in costs with his congestive heart failure alone.
