So just because you don't understand japanese culture and the subtleties of shinto bhudism, the movie is pointless. Great for you.
It's great to see people dismiss something without truly understanding it first. But then again people are lazy, it's not a sin by any measure. Just a fact of life. There are alot of hidden commentary on post war mentality and Japan's struggle to come to terms with its new role in an increasingly technological society.
Bullshit.
If you liked the film, then that's fine. But don't go making up some baloney to justify a 2-dimensional director scrabbling to look deep and thoughtful beyond his measure. --Who, while no doubt influenced by the current psychological state of his culture and the 'Subtleties of Shinto Bhudism', was almost certainly not trying to make any points about it any more than most American film makers try to jam kitsch Christ imagery into any given Western pop culture film. --At least I hope not, because that WOULD have been a desperate bid for substance.
He ripped off the ending from 2001, for crying out loud! This film was pretty graphics and a violent, depressing, boring, say-nothing story.
The only thing which Akira DID achieve, (beyond it's technical excellence at the time), was to replay certain interesting ideas about human transformation which just happened to be a helluva lot closer to the mark than most people are willing to or capable of admitting. Too bad it was all presented with flat, unlikable characters and an over-arching sense of, "This Is A Very Important Movie, So It Must Be Treated With The Utmost Seriousness."
Yawn.
Not much different from "Ghost in the Shell", or "Wings of Whateveritwascalled".
It's like, the moment a film goes over a certain budget in Japan, the script doctors feel compelled to bore us to death with fake intellectualism.
Newsflash: Being 'Smart' in no way means it can't also be 'Entertaining'.
Kurosawa knew how to make a film. Juzo Itami knows how to make a film. Hayo Miyazaki knows how to make a film. Hell, the first ten episodes of Dragonball did more honest & insightful work than Akira! (Before it turned into a brainless and endless WWF style kung-fu showdown.)
Akira was pretty fluff made by a production house terrified of not looking smart.
There are three reasons film adaptations get made.
1. Because somebody with more than enough creative power to write and produce their own high grade work, gets electrified by another artist's idea to the point that they are willing to pour their own skills into realizing that work in film.
Examples of this are films like Stand by Me and The Bridges of Madison County and The Terminator.
2. When through a purely accountant driven system, a great foriegn film is decided upon as the next studio project. No soul, no creative verve, and nobody except executives salivating to get it made. Point of No Return is a perfect example of such a film.
It should be noted that projects like this, can sometimes turn out well if a powerful creative mind becomes very excited and is given a pivotal role in the film's production, but this rarely happens.
3. When dreamers with only moderate skill or creative talent of their own find themselves in positions of power, and get electrified by a brilliant artist's vision, and set out to realize that vision in film. --The problem is that such creators usually miss the nuances of a work and provide only the surface glitter and an over-amplified approximation of what they were moved by in the original form but did not understand the mechanics of.
These creators are not professional artists so much as they are Fans-boys with budgets. And there are rather a large number of them out there.
Their works include films like, Fellowship of The Rings, and Stargate, which admittedly was not an adaptation, but a wasted idea nonetheless. (The same can be said of any film made by Emmerich and Devlin!), and of course, Blade.
Akira struck me as a very cold film with a lot of neat looking effects and interesting takes on psi-power, but which ultimately had no heart and virtually nothing significant to say at all.
Unfortunately, while there is a handful of rather amazing exceptions, this could describe nearly all of the media which comes out of Japan. A very 'obedient' nation which spends a great deal of energy actively punishing anybody who dares express their individuality, and anybody who comes up with anything even remotely resembling a new idea. Careful shadings of old ideas are all that are acceptable. --According to a few friends who moved away as soon as they were old enough, I am assured that Japan was NOT a fun place to grow up.
After 6 hours of Moyer's interview with Campbell, I came away not caring a jot about any of the stuff you seem to be getting your knickers in a twist over.
Campbell wasn't about scientific reductionism. He was a fan of mythology, and he studied it with zeal. --And as is natural for anybody with a creative mind, he saw grand patterns emerging in the material. He took pleasure in exploring and illustrating those patterns for others. It's ridiculous to think that somebody could get upset or bothered by any aspect of his work. And it's downright hillarious that anybody would approach with anything resembling a stuffy accademic high-brow attitude.

I've been called crazy before, but only by the timid Nile swimmers who have yet to break away from the propaganda machine, and who in varying degrees believe that corporations are benevolent, Government is run by the people for the people, their school text books were not programming tools, and that the 'Learning Channel' is somehow on a higher plane than CNN and Goebles. --And that this current spate of crap in Israel is not being conjured for a specific end, that it's "Just happening natural-like, guffaw guffaw."
Think about this folks, if time travel is real, (which it almost certainly is, if you bother to do any research whatsoever), you will also discover that it is just a damned toy. Using Tesla and Puharich EM theory, Von Neumann built one for the Government decades ago, (and they killed him for it. How nice.). And so what? This is basically a non-issue. Humans with machines are a non-issue, despite what they think. Beings living in 5th dimensional reality would be able to 'time travel' just as easily as you can walk down the street. This whole implanted chip thing is WAY too obvious. As such, its true nature is almost certainly meant primarily to be psychological. Why do you think they would make something like this line up with the whole 'independantly related' number of the beast crap?
Try this on for size:
Practically EVERY fascist government in history has begun the same way: People were rioting or revolting or what have you. This gave whatever leadership available at the time the context and excuse underwhich to bring in the heavy forces and do away with all semblance of civility and personal rights.
Think about this, and don't thunder about and get angry with what I'm saying, because this is not a direct course of manipulation designed to be open to immediate interpretation. If it were obvious, it wouldn't work. Look, watch and learn. . . You don't get to see the end of the world unfold every day. There is some really clever work going on right now.
The problem with all of this thinking is that you are assuming that just because a document exists, and because the, "Jews and Romans were meticulous record keepers," that the information must be honest by virtue of its existence.
Look at how the media today is skewed on purpose, not through editorial slanting, not through errors in translation, but because there are people who want certain views to be broadcast. And yes, one could ask, "Why would the Romans want any information which is so anti-Roman as the bible to be distributed? It makes no sense!"
Well, think. ..
Does today's CIA have America's best interests at heart? --Think about things like their covert support of the hard drug trade. --And plans like this whole microchips in people thing which has 'secret service' stamped all over it. In the most utterly simple terms, it pays in huge returns in both arms sales, and for reasons of political leverage for them to spread hatred of Americans in other nations. Gee! This crap with the middle east has vaulted Bush's popularity to all time highs? No shit? (And that's the MOST simple application of the idea.)
Now think: Is it not reasonable to believe that the Romans had their own secret service? (A centuries old empire? They MUST have!) --And is it not reasonable to believe that it was corrupt? --Democracy certainly doesn't work to control such agencies today, and the same forces which would wish to corrput such an agency were just as real then as they are now. Quite simply, the same way the American secret agencies manipulate CNN and public thought patterns, the Roman counterparts were involved in similar activities aimed at shaping the public psyche. The various books of the bible would without question have been prime targets.
The place where people are getting derailed in this thinking is that they are allowing the 'impossible' to prevent the pieces to fall together in a meaningful way. This is the primary lie you are being distracted from noticing. All you need do is climb out of the neat little boxes. If you are going to think archeology, you must also think geology. . , and that's a very very simple example. You must be willing to go against the flow and put several VERY VERY obvious areas of current news, history and scientific disciplines together in order to form the whole picture. Does today's CIA have America's best interests at heart? --Think about things like their covert support of the hard drug trade. --And plans like this whole microchips in people thing have 'secret service' stamped all over it. The CIA is just a pawn of hidden forces which don't care about the U.S., and yet, the CIA remains an agency peopled by Americans. --Thus, their actions are 'American' in the most nuts and bolts sense. This is how I meant it when I said the bible was 80% Roman propaganda. Perhaps this was misleading, since it wasn't strictly a Roman born idea, but they enacted and enforced it; they mass-burned the clearer writings, put false prophets into place, and allowed easy distribution of the twisted materials. So who the hell else am I going to pin all this Roman funded activity on? Lizards? Sheesh.
Now think: Is it not reasonable to believe that the Romans had their own secret service? (A centuries old empire? Consider, forwards and backwards the ramifications of such a statement!!!!
if you really sit down and study it this is all predicted in the bible. even all the stuff thats going on over in isreal was predicted.
Careful now. ..
The Bible, by many accounts, is about 80% Roman propaganda, inspired by the same forces which are running things today, affecting our news agencies and textbook makers with just as much vigor as back then. There is a definite agenda at work here, and manufactured religions, (i.e. nearly all of them, including all of the big ones), are very much a part of the psychological programming at work.
If people believe in the apocalypse according to King James, that it is pre-destined, it will make it that much easier for those who intend to harvest us.
This is a free choice universe, a very powerful truth which some would like you to discard. While Jesus was very likely an enlightened teacher of great influence, his words have been massively corrupted. The Bible is a HUGE lie; it promotes a linear reality, a shutting down of the natural human thinking and questioning process, filling people with a fear of knowledge and individual thinking, and it indoctrinates people with programs like, "Turn the Other Cheek," and "The Meek Will Inherit", etc. --Exactly the kind of thinking you want people to have if you plan to harvest. Don't take over until people are ready to accept their "Shepherds" with open arms. It's all about efficiency and paths of least resistance.
So you are right, stuff is starting to go down as predicted in the bible, but it is only because the whole damned thing is a set-up.

Yes, the U.S. is the richest country on Earth (We Earned It!). But we also give away a *lot* of our wealth to the third world in the form of food/medicine aid. And our oftentimes needed military interventions are *extremely* costly. The United States is arguably rather generous compared to regions like Europe, who rarely lifts a finger (monetarily speaking) in hot-spot conflict resolution.
These things are certainly true to a degree, (although many other nations do their part to help in terms of humanitarian aid.)
But the U.S. is also one of the largest offenders in terms of corporate third world slave-labor exploitation. This is selfish in the extreme.
The U.S. appetite for narcotics is also such that entire nations are socially and economically laid waste if they are so unlucky as to sit on a drug trafficing corridor.
Beef, a luxury food at best, is consumed in huge quantities at the cost of world's rainforests. Again, an act of massive selfishness.
And the drug/food/technolgy export industries. Do you remember the Pablum debacle of the 70's? (Free Pablum given away in third world nations, which after a few weeks of use allows the mother's milk to dry up, after which parents must buy more of the American baby food to prevent their children from starving.) --Either by error or through corporate manipulation, whole nations are duped or forced into consuming things which irrevocably damage their social well-being and culture. --All so that U.S. manufacturer's can grow rich. And these are not choices. Foriegn governments are pushed into making these moves through corruption and C.I.A., (or similar), manipulations. Destroying cultures to open markets and keep Americans employed and some Americans very, very wealthy. This is selfishness.
So yes, the U.S. is the richest counrty on Earth, and they certainly did 'Earn' it, but in doing so, a lot of blood has been spilled and a lot of innocent people have been shamed and hurt.
Now don't get me wrong here. I am a Canadian, and I will point out something upon which most non-Americans will agree. ..
Nearly all the Americans I have ever met have been good-hearted, likable people who truly shudder at the thought of doing something immoral. It isn't the individuals.
It's the U.S. nation as a whole which is insane. (And Canada isn't a whole lot better!) --Owned and maintained by a corrupt elite, the U.S. is a nation which lies and manipulates the opinions of its good people through propaganda in its entertainment, its news and in its class rooms.
I really like Americans; I really like people in general. --I believe very firmly that if it wasn't the U.S., it would simply be another nation from which the darkness would arise. And there are forces which do not care about border designations for whom it is VERY important that the darkness does arise. It is painful to watch when any group of people are swept along by something they probably wouldn't choose if they actually had a choice.
Anyway, there is nothing we can do that will keep people from hating us. We have the power to pick winners and losers, and so we'll be resented for what we don't do just as much as for what we do. So we just have to do the right thing as best we can, and give the world as few VALID reasons to hate us as possible.
The problem is, (assuming that your writing is representative of your character), that you are one of the 'good' people; 'Good' being a relative term, to be certain. --Essentially, one who strives to be less self-centered than is common, and generally compassionate.
There are people and forces at work in the U.S., the current world capital of greed and selfishness, who certainly do NOT subscribe to the thoughts voiced in your post. And for the most part, they have all the power and all the money.
Solution?
Sorry. There isn't one. --The fact of the matter, (according to what I have learned at any rate), is that the whole world, and indeed, the whole cosmos, is just a great big school for the soul. The best you can do is to hunker down and get the best marks you can, and when able, offer your advice to the smaller kids when the bullies come a'knocking. --But don't fight for them; that prevents their learning and is in itself a selfish act. (You get to feel heroic, and they don't learn how to deal with bullies.)
After all this, you ought to just try to enjoy the whole careening show for what it is. There are some really clever acrobatics and special effects going on right now, in the media and on the international stage in general.
It's not every day you get to watch the end of the world!

Can, have done, will do, over and over again. Think about this.
Okay. That's MORE enough fodder for the fire today! Mod me down or funny or whatever you want. --And to those of you who are reading this and thinking, "Shit, what if. . ?" and there are sparks going off in your minds, then that's good, but it isn't enough by far. Awareness is key!!! So don't sit around. Learn! 'Time' is fast running out.

Doubt it. Writers must have the ability to think beyond popular pre-set parameters.
But your attempt to snicker at the different kid has paid off in gold! --You can now return to the highschool cafeteria and play at being 'cool' with your pose or whatever.
Now, be off with you! Go make a poorly designed juvenile attempt at a counter culture website or whatever it is you think you do. --Hint; griping about gender differences and actually considering it clever content says more about you than you should ever want people to know. (Can't believe I bothered to check your site! You got me at a low-energy point this evening. Feel blessed.)

This whole implanted chip thing is WAY too obvious. As such, its true nature is almost certainly meant primarily to be psychological. It's designed to piss people off and increase their tension level. (Especially among southern law enforcement agencies and right wing anti-government types who love their guns.) Why do you think they would make something like this line up with the whole 'independantly related' number of the beast crap?
Try this on for size:
Practically EVERY fascist government in history has begun the same way: People were rioting or revolting or what have you. This gave whatever leadership available at the time the context and excuse underwhich to bring in the heavy forces and do away with all semblance of civility and personal rights.
Think about this, and don't thunder about and get angry with what I'm saying, because this is not a direct course of manipulation designed to be open to immediate interpretation. If it were obvious, it wouldn't work. When the camel's back breaks, it will not be because of this whole chip thing, but it wouldn't be able to happen without it and other such methods by which the temperature has quietly been raised to boiling for the poor frog!
Watch and listen. .
Hey! Did anybody else notice how for the first time they slipped the word, "FEMA" into Martin Sheen's mouth on "The West Wing" this Wednesday. . . (My current favorite source of mind control and propaganda!)
Look, watch and learn. . . You don't get to see the end of the world unfold every day. There is some really clever work going on right now.

Look at how the media today is skewed on purpose, not through editorial slanting, not through errors in translation, but because there are people who want certain views to be broadcast. And yes, one could ask, "Why would the Romans want any information which is so anti-Roman as the bible to be distributed? It makes no sense!"
Well, think. .
The fact that such a simple task is found practically impossible by nearly everybody is a tribute to just how effective the programming has been.
Are you up to it? Try it just for fun and see where it leads you. You might want to start with a word like, 'Abductions'.
But then, you might not. Makes no difference to me.
-Fantastic Lad
Nope. You're just knee-jerking without thinking this through.
They MUST have!) --And is it not reasonable to believe that it was corrupt? --Democracy certainly doesn't work to control such agencies today, and the same forces which would wish to corrput such an agency were just as real then as they are now. Sounds like your mind is already made up.
Though it is interesting that you made note of my posting history. .
If you're truly seeking, then keep bugging me and perhaps I'll put on my tinfoil hat and talk 'crazy' just for you.
In the mean time, I suggest you do some hunting around on your own. It's all out there if you have the courage. Castaneda is a good place to start. If you can't deal with that, then this path obviously isn't for you. Nothing wrong with being a chicken. I wouldn't opt for it myself, mind you. .

Quoth Spock, "He is demonstrating two dimensional thinking."
The forces driving the ancient version of the CIA did not have Roman interests at heart. --Think about it: If you are trying to set up the human race over a multi-millenial period of time, then who cares how the Romans come off appearing in the history books?
Consider, forwards and backwards the ramifications of such a statement!!!!
-Fantastic Lad
Careful now. .
-Fantastic Lad --Shepherds tend their flocks, but they also fleece and butcher them.
This poster is a pretty good example of what I'm talking about.
The propaganda in the Middle East, Europe and the West are all carefully designed to create an atmosphere which will make it very easy for the U.N. to walk in and declare martial law in Israel. New World Order, here we come!
I wish people were less easily programmed. It would at the very least force those behind the curtain to come up with more interesting mind games. This Bruce Willis airplanes into skyscrapers stuff is just so pandering suck-o 'B-Movie-With-A-Budget' crap.
Ah well, I guess most of the viewing public is of highschool education or less. Give me Godzilla any day of the week!

United States is arguably rather generous compared to regions like Europe, who rarely lifts a finger (monetarily speaking) in hot-spot conflict resolution.
I am a Canadian, and I will point out something upon which most non-Americans will agree. .
If only democracy actually worked!

In the West, a slow but steadily increasing impatience with Israel is being deliberately fostered.
In Israel, (and indeed, among Palestinians), a similar grooming of public awareness and political policy is being maintained in order to keep the fires of rage and mistrust and total disharmony burning.
Why?
When the U.N. tanks roll ashore and the U.N. helicopters start dropping troops on your head, it ought to become more clear. And all the world will applaud and approve and we will all be one big step closer to realizing the dreams of a small group of ultra-powerful egomaniacs.
And incidentally, I think this point is entirely in keeping with the topic of Globalization.
-Fantastic Lad
Sadly, unlike an idea such as, "Cutting Down Rain Forests", the threats associated with Globalism, for most people, are not immediately obvious until some complex thinking and networking has taken place.

I really hope this isn't April Fool's stuff. I love a well crafted time-travel yarn, and I've never understood the "I hate Wesley" sentiment. It was cool to see Wil redeam himself with his own internet presence in the face of the overwhelmingly stupid & cruel American public, and it would be REALLY cool to see this grow into an interesting new character on Enterprise.
Kid Crusher is a character with legacy and legend behind him. That sort of thing can carry a wonderful sort of weight. They say the best friends are those you went to school with. --This is because you saw old friends grow up; you know their history first hand. You shared it. Knowing that Wesley started out as most of us did, (as an uncool but earnest kid), and has grown through hard knocks and good teachers into a Jedi-equivalent is very, very cool.
I hope, if it happens, that they play it right. Could be very good!
-Fantastic Lad --The Deserving Underdog Always gets my Vote. Crass popularity is for Sheep and Cowards.
For such domination to work, one must agree to it.
As such, it is important that people be aware that they are being used; they must be aware of spyware and corporate manipulations, they must in fact have the choice of not opting in.
And not opting in, I notice in this case, has become harder than just hitting the 'Decline' button on the install page. It has gone deeper; choosing is now predicated on there being a general awareness that corporate entities always want something in return for free goodies even if the string is all but invisible. (Though, not so invisible that it isn't reported on popular news forums. .
The meat just doesn't taste right if it isn't agreeable.

Yeah, I was thinking much the same thing. Wouldn't it be 'funny' if those two towers came down as an indirect result of the very philosophy the terrorists were protesting?

Umm. .
The point of the fact is that the fireproofing material, regardless of what type it was, was shocked off the surfaces they were supposed to protect by the impact explosion. So it wouldn't have mattered if it was made of asbestos or donkey shit.
Oh, except, if the world was run by brain trusts of your caliber, then when the towers came down and sent up that huge cloud of dust which covered the entire city, (and which subsequently caused lung problems among hundreds of thousands of people), it would have instead been a cloud of asbestos filled dust.
Yeah, the world really needs your two cents on the next city planning committee.
