pdf is an waful format to make derivative works from. for example, I would like to bake a plucker-ebook for my palm from it, but with acrobats text export function as the only available export tool, it screws footnotes and page numbers etc.
Just a reminder of what just happened in Munich, Germany: while trying to convince public administration to choose Windows, Microsoft dramatically reduced its prices. So, if you're a big company or a public entity, the sole announcement that you consider the Linux alternative can save you a couple of million dollars. Not considering OSS alternatives will cost you or your taxpayers millions of dollars.
The technology for videophones has been around since the 40ies. Try and search the web if you don't believe it. The point is, users don't want it. No matter how many times a year a technology start-up pops up and tells us that yes, they can do it, users don't want it. Shouldn't be that hard to understand.
as cell phones increasingly become something that a teenager gets with her driver's license (...) I knew the US are lagging behind Europe in terms of cell phone usage, but I didnt think it was that much. In Germany, being 14 and not having at least a crappy Nokia 3210 means your parents are technophobic hippies, and that youre socially death.
Minkowski is the gemoetrical model used in (special) relativity theorie to describe our world. So it's basically that 4d thing that "warps" and does other weird stuff. An intuitive description of this would really be a nice thing to have.
In Europe, there's a 70 or so candidates (but some of them seem to candidate just for fun). Looking at the endorsments received right now, there seems to be a good chance that the speaker of german hacker organization CCC Andy Mueller Maghun will make it.
My favourite, though, is crypto- and usenet activist Lutz Donnerhacke, who is CCC-related as well.

That's why competition is so good.
It's not one any more, it's a happy variety of dialects. So why not call it Multics? After all, that's where it started...

...for penguins, I guess.
The world champion team is always automatically qualified for the next championship.
Sometimes its easy to forget it, but in reality(tm) a nation is quite different from a bar.

Well, to overestimate the importance of code-size efficiency 200+ years ago is quite a tollerable error to me. ;)
Lycos should put an informative message explaining this, instead of lenghty propaganda text.
