  2. I may be displaying my ignertz... on Interview with James Gosling · · Score: 1
I may be revealing a dangerous level of ignorance about Linux, but just exactly what ARE the problems with Linux that Gosling aludes too?

I don't understand why a virtual machine wouldn't be happy on any distro as long as its statically linked and stuff...

    Any insights?

  3. It depends... on Ask Slashdot: Employees or Contractors? · · Score: 1
If you are able to define the task well and that task is VERY finite then a contractor is fine. But a real (long term) employee is a MUST for big stuff.

As a well-paid Software Engineer I know that I prefer to be a real employee over being a ho for a bunch of brain-pimps (the contracting firm). I've done both.

One of the best things about being permanent is having a boss who really appreciates my dedication and skill (and becomes addicted to it) as opposed to a pimp who says "your last John sayz yer, like, real good or sumpthin" with glazed eyes. I don't mean to put them down too much. They're often well intended enough.

Then again not all contractors are body-shops, but I've not been forutnate enough to work for those...

The last time I was dubbed "Troll" for tendering a critisism (albeit harsh) of some other crappy work by Katz.

  6. Katz is deluded... on The G4 and Apple's Second Coming · · Score: 0
Apple's string of successes says a lot about the fact that individual creativity will beat out corporate marketers every single time.

In fact it sucked so much that I was suspicious of it being a genuine IETF draft. I couldn't imagine releaseing to the public a "professional paper" with the horrific language use therein.

    Silly me...

My university has a thing called the WEPT (Written English Proficiency Test) that ALL undergrads must pass before receiving a degree. I used to think it was foolish...

  15. In the public intrest! on Oregon judge rules AT&T must open cables · · Score: 1

It isn't fair that AT&T be screwed for upgrading their network but there is a compelling mitigating argument.

I don't know how AT&T does things but those of us in Time Warner's fiefdom (through their Road Runner service) could benefit from this. Consider that they demand to install their crappy (AOL like) front end on your Windoze (not Linux!) system so that you can get their service. Their annoying front end is also based on IE so that it must also be installed. (Yes I know there are ways around this but it the principal!)

A ruling like this makes it possible to select a high speed provider that will humbly give me a dynamic IP and NO OTHER CRAP.

  17. There may be an upside... on Lycos Mp3 Lawsuit? · · Score: 1

If they (the greedy record pinheads) do proceed with litigation it will cost Lycos an unfair and huge amount of money, but if Lycos is willing to advocate a principle of "we don't provide, we point; you f**k" then Lycos (and, by implication, all of us) CAN triumph! The frequent wisdom the Supremes have demonstrated when dealing with internet stuff (unlike our idiot congress) reinforces this hope... Even if there is such a doctrine as "contributory infringment", it could be defeated. Hopefully.
