    I wonder if this means that I'll finally be able to get a static IP (or four) through my cable modem.

    I wonder how AOTime will handle bandwidth hogs (like me) that use a different ISP. I'll probably be throttled down to crappy ISDN speeds.

    Oh well, there's always ASDL.

    No, I'm 30 and I don't actually beleive it. But I can't really say it's impossible.

    The DMV is in pretty stark contrast to the NSA. Both in power, resources and competence.

    Does anyone have any details of the attack? Was Which computers (more relevantly whose networks) was it launched from? 50 isn't really all that big a number; therefore those 50 had to have some pretty fat pipes.

    And now for something completely goofy: Someone posted a highly moderated comment in "Forum: The Yahoo Denial of Service" chastising the goons behind the attack for the fascist response it will surely elicit from Big Brother. (Here's the goofy paranoid part) what if these attacks are BY Big Brother? What better way to "prove" a need for all the taps and backdoors they want?

    Think about it: Who else benefits from such a stupid, pointless attack? (Other than firewall and ID consultants/vendors I mean.)

    For my money I pick NQC! There's ports for Linux, Mac, and Windoze.

    If you use windows try Mark Overmar's RCX control center. It's a keen IDE with a bunch of other kewl features like remote control, var watches, and more!

    It's especially bad news given that verisign's commitment to customer service seems to indicate that they already think they have a monopoly. IOW: They suck with more negative pressure than a telco.

    That assertion is based on some recent personal experiance.

    MS's stuff seems to be the only viable (as in it works) alternative to Real. And Real pretty much sucks. It's mind-bogglingly failure prone under ANY OS. Given two links to choose from, Real or MS Media, I'll pick MS just cause I have a higher (though certainty is never present) expectation that it will work.

    When Amazon filed the suit (actually when I heard about it here on /.) I, that very day, decided not to buy something from Amazon. I have since convinced 11 other people to stop using Amazon.

    Most of them can't grasp the issue, but are willing to do what I ask as friends.

    I hope it proves useful for a "mythic figure" like RMS to start something like this... I'm pessimistic but I still hope...

    I submit that this action by id should be viewed with the least amount of paranoia possible. Yes it is rude but it isn't evil. Carmack has behaved honorably in the past and this serious breech of etiquette is merely a breech of ettiquette.

    It's good and right for people to bitch about this but try to be forgiving.

    PS: (to those quake seeky enough to follow the plan files) What did you think authenticate.idsoftware.com was for??? I was afraid it would be used for dark purposes and I'm releived it's use is as innocuous as it is! (May Carmack not make me recant my relief!)

    A processor for mobility is irrelevant. I want a REAL computer in my hand, not something so underpowered as to be relegated to the mobile market.

    The only useful advance for mobile computing would be chip-set, accessory, etc integration ON ONE CHIP and better power supplies. Much better power supplies.

    They should be researching new cable INSTALLING techniques. Who cares how much bandwidth the trunk a half mile away has if I can't have any of it? Until it cost about 3 orders of magnatude less than $450K per mile (number based on unreliable recollections) for fiber I'll be stuck in the bleak world of copper.

    Vacuous futurist idea: Imagine a very small machine that burrows from a central office/switch to your basement with very little operator attention. As it burrows it's dragging along a strand or two of lovely fiber.

    Listen to me whine! I'm lucky enough to have a cable modem and I'm STILL not content!

    Actually, I was trying to be ironic. Having a bias seems to be unavoidable to we mere mortals. At least this article was biased to the Right and Good instead of the dark forces of corporate badness.

    I'm not seeing linux there ;)

    Keep in mind, all (or most) of those features would have signifigant colateral impact. Things arguably unrealted to commerce would be positively effected.

    Right now I'm fantasizing about being able to lurk far more efficently in sci.space.tech. Being able to filter posts unsing unforgable poster identities would save so much time!

    A REALLY secure capability based security system also depends on the first.

    Only an unforgable identity is sufficient to have total security.
    Not that my small brain can imagine anything like a GENUINELY unforgable ID...

    I second that sentiment ("I just don't like the Java GUI")! And not just from a performance POV...

    I remember trying to do some experimental and trivial GUI thing with Java back in 97 and having traumatic flash-backs to Motif and X! ICK!

    Layout managers are JUST PLAIN WRONG! If you can't render my pixels the way I want them, then nuts to you!

    Java is a fantastic language but it fails to be a fun or practical way to do GUI stuff. Making GUIs w/o an IDE is NEVER fun but all the IDEs w/GUI RAD for Java (including VJ) that I've tried just can't compete with VB, VFP or even html in notepad!

    I don't. I'm having plenty of fun with Linux even if I do have to engorge BillG's wallet some more when I'm at work. (And sometimes at home...)

    Why should we care or want to be "mainstream"? Linux need only be useful (which it is) to those that like that sort of thing. Why care about those that don't!

    Hatred, even directed at those worthy of it (MS), is a poor choice of motivation.

    The reason people print is bcause current monitors are hard on the eye. The only thing that will kill paper is super-high resolution (1200+ dpi) reflective monitors. Reflective like E ink and other products that have a long way to go.

    Of course these monitors must be touch sensitive, largeish (>=8.5"x11") conveiniently portable, and durable.

    Then again, even this hypothetical technological marvel may fail to kill printers. I just printed off a web page so I could turn my head instead of hitting alt-tab while editing JS for that page ;)

    I wish I had a job where Knuths work was of immediate relevence. I haven't had to sort anything myself since college.

    Sometimes I think things are just too easy these days :) I got exicted yesterday morning when I used mod for the first time in YEARS. I think that means I'm desperate for some real work!
