Nothing's going to change in this respect according to the chain of command. Can't say much being an employee and all, but it's definately a good thing for the company, and for the community at large.
It has actually created a new niche. DWIW media players like foobar2000 http://www.foobar2000.org/. Even amarok in it's default layout is nicely navigable. Extraneous options hidden behind either menus or sidebars.
Don't blame the developers. Blame the architects/management. 90% of the time, ideas this evil are because a pointy-haired has decided it's a Good Idea(tm) and has mandated that it must be a piece of the software. There are many times I have railed against a bad idea that has been poorly thought out by management/architects, some of them I've won against, some lost, some I've just walked away.

As of qtopia 2.2, qtopia already has this functionality... (With plugable back ends due for qtopia 4.x)
