No it wasn't (profitable), that was why Eirik and Haarvard shopped it around. We were all just lucky that nokia took an interest in us, thanks due strongly to Sebastian Nystrom.
Honestly, had they mandated silverlight, and included this in the silverlight install, I think they may have gotten it to most of the users that they would need to have it anyway, and pissed less people off in the process.
Welcome to the new (steve) microsoft, same as the old (bill) microsoft.
So it has not network stack? Or keyboard? Or monitor, or...
That's the only way I'd deem it that secure.

I recommend using QDevelop with the free version of Qt, it's coming along quite nicely, and makes the whole experience quite nice to use with the mingw32 compiler. I've not kept up with the state of free/msvc integration, but yes, you won't get all the niceties of help file/designer/auto-moc'ing that vs integration gives you with devstudio express. The reason for that is because microsoft doesn't allow extensions to be loaded into it, which is how the vs integration stuff works.
Actually, in Qt we have a mandate for backwards binary compatibility. Only if it's an absolute necessity is binary compatibility broken, and I honestly can't think of a single time in the 4.x stream of code that we have done that. So, your "framework hell" argument is moot. Only the latest version of Qt is "needed", and should support all applications compiled for previous revisions of Qt4.
Considering that qtopia is developed over here in Australia, we are not exempt from software patent protection, so my comment makes a great deal of sense. Instead of sticking our heads in the sand in regards to patenting, we're getting a rather heavyweight player on our side and behind us to help us further our development to be the best damn software stack we possibly can.
Actually, I think nokia have chosen an admirable path. Think about the number of patents they have in the phone space, and the strength they have to fight them. Trolltech could easily have been squashed into oblivion, without much of a blink of nokia's eyes.
I for one welcome my new finnish overlords, as there are many benefits for this troll to keep doing what I love best.
It's not really "made for a framebuffer", it's an adaptation of a desktop toolkit. Actually, with Arthur (the new rendering engine in qt4), it's not adapted, Arthur renders to engines. We have a framebuffer engine, so this is incorrect.
So does X11. So well, that we have to have our engine handle compositing most of the time. Again partially incorrect.
Indeed. And that again illustrates how Qt is designed: as a big, monolithic C++ library. Qt is now divided up into sub libraries for the different functional areas. So again, incorrect.
X11's protocol and extension architecture is a good thing, and it's a major deficiency that Qt isn't designed like that. See my point above about arthur. Arthur can use a plugin to a pre-compiled system allow you to render to an svg or png, which can then be supplied to say a web server. The plugin system in qt (and qtopia by extension) is a full blown first class system. Arthurs' engine system, is also a complete system (with many examples, directx, gdi, framebuffer, opengl, carbon, and soon cocoa). So, again incorrect.
Please, get your facts straight first, as this dicussion hasn't even gotten out of the graphics library yet.
It's definately not a greenphone, but it's definately Qtopia. Here's the greenphone specs to compare with http://www.yuhuatel.com/english/omega.php (ignore the 512/512 they say, it's 64M mem, 128M flash).
I just got confirmation, this is a Qtopia phone, so, altho it will likely be nowhere near as open as the greenphone, you should be able to dev something for the greenphone and have it work out of the box for this phone.
The problem with that release was that motorola didn't release an SDK. Hard to develop with no SDK. (EZX is not quite Qtopia). With this release, the full sdk, plus a vmware test environment is shipped on a CD supplied with the phone.
Actually, if you'd RTFA'd, you'd have seen that this phone was geared towards developers, and as such will be targeted and sold to such. Also, the Secure Execution Environment is geared towards making sure that things such as spyware are kept to a minimum. If vendors such as singular wish to release their own Qtopia based phone, then there are provisions for this, that they can lock down to their hearts content, such as single-exec build, which will only run the built in applications. Qtopia is a full blown stack, source and deliverables, and as such I can't agree with your predictions of failure.
In the end, this release is geared towards generating a developer community for qtopia 4, and a developer community can make a product, through both generating new apps for consumers to use, as well as by word of mouth by those more in touch with technology. How else do you think microsoft became the dominant pc platform?:)
This is why Trolltech is providing a turnkey solution like Qtopia. Faster time to market, because all of the testing has been done for you, plus support channels and if necessary a full PSO section to provide custom development. *shrugs* Just like microsoft, or symbian, so half of your points are moot.
Didn't you even take time to read the FAQ? Why? Because customers have been requesting it. What better way for a company to make money than to supply something that..... wait for it. The Customers Have Requested.
*chuckles* grab anything with the new qtopia 4 when it comes out on devices. I know for a fact we have SIP in the base phone-package. (Not qtopia core tho, so dodge them if you want SIP).
Don't be afraid, Qt's future is secured.

Heard. Noted. Not yet (but soon).

It's a personal choice thing. Mostly us trolls say cute (once we've been indoctrinated correctly :))
Must be a Sla... oh wait... nevermind... :)

Qtopia comes with a sip client out of the box, so yes, this is doable.
I just got confirmation, this is a Qtopia phone, so, altho it will likely be nowhere near as open as the greenphone, you should be able to dev something for the greenphone and have it work out of the box for this phone.
Actually, if this is based on the GW1, it will be a QTopia phone anyway.
The problem with that release was that motorola didn't release an SDK. Hard to develop with no SDK. (EZX is not quite Qtopia). With this release, the full sdk, plus a vmware test environment is shipped on a CD supplied with the phone.

Believe me, I work for trolltech, and it definately isn't vapourware. It's just not feature complete yet.

I revoke that pass. It's not a nucules, it's a nucleus. Regionalism or not, it's still wrong.
so why not the company? :)
