  1. Re:What about Dreamcast? on Playstation 2 Innards, Annotated · · Score: 1

The Dreamcast does not run Red Hat Linux, it does not run Windows CE. It does not contain its own operating system. Each game disc can be built for WinCE or Linux because these are the OS's to which the Dreamcast SDK has been ported. Whatever disc is in the machine when it is powered on determines what OS will run.

  2. This isn't that big a deal on @Home Stops Allowing VPNs · · Score: 1
You can still go ahead and use NAT or a proxy to share your internet connection. Microsoft's defintion of a VPN is this:
A virtual private network is a way to simulate a private network over a public network, such as the Internet. It is called "virtual" because it depends on the use of virtual connections-that is, temporary connections that have no real physical presence, but consist of packets routed over various machines on the Internet on an ad hoc basis. Secure virtual connections are created between two machines, a machine and a network, or two networks.
(I use Microsoft's words because Comcast will agree ... MS owns a stake of @Home.)

So this new license restriction only prevents you from using your @Home service as an endpoint for tunneling between two larger networks. This is probably so that small residential-based businesses don't use two @Home subscriptions as a dirt cheap way to connect their networks.

    No biggie.

  3. Re:look at vqf on Ogg Vorbis - The Free Alternative To MP3 · · Score: 2

My last experience with VQF was a while ago, but from what I remember, the Yamaha encoder was quite slow and the Winamp Plug-in didn't let you seek through a song. That was enough to turn me away from VQF, and I haven't looked back since; the same probably goes for a lot of other people. VQF needed better player support when it was launched, and so it failed.

Vorbis doesn't need scare tactics because they can focus on streaming content, where they have no free competition. Live streaming audio (speech, or music) is controlled by Microsoft, Real, and Fraunhaufer. All they have to do is pitch their Ogg bitstreams to small companies or organizations.

Think about it: you're a small non-profit organization that wants to broadcast real-time speech (interviews, news, whatever). Would you rather pay for a Real streaming server, or would you use a free system like Vorbis?

Once Vorbis gains a foothold, even a small one in the streaming market, it will get more publicity and people will pay more attention to it. From there, it can only become more popular.

PNG/MNG store rasterized bitmaps. This new format stores vector images. The difference is that vector images are pixel-independant; they are scalable to any size, aspect ratio, or dpi setting you like.

The downside to vector images is that you are limited to the drawing commands provided in the format. While you can apply all sorts of Photoshop filters to a bitmap and save it as PNG, you can only use lines, text, and area fills in a vector format.

  8. Jurisdiction issues? on The "Colorado Junk Email Law" · · Score: 1
IANAL, but it would seem that this law only applies to spam sent from Colorado. Otherwise you have the whole interstate-commerce thing, since SPAM is technically advertising for a product. If this law is challenged in court by a spammer who is caught, it probably won't stand. And of course, how exactly do you catch non-corporate spammers?

Note that I haven't actually read it because, thanks to millions of /. readers, the server gives 500 Internal Error ...

  9. Not really useful on Multi-Head Gaming · · Score: 1

It's cute, but mostly worthless. Usually, you sit around 2 feet from your (primary) monitor, and it fills a good portion of your vision. If you back up enough so that you can see all the monitors at once, each monitor is rather small. It's like watching a wide-screen movie on a 4:3 monitor; you get a horizontal stripe of action with the top and bottom cut off. You have to swivel your head a bit, and your FPS drop too. Ugh. It's a lot better to use one monitor with a fisheye 180 FOV than to use 5 monitors.

First off, here is the official definition of a Moody.

Perhaps you've all forgotten his original column from 1998? Try this article. To quote directly,

But my informant didn't just rant: he probed the psychology of the Grail-seekers: "because linux makes it easy ... to mess under the hood, people actually feel like they 'control' ... it doesnt come from any rational thoughts."
    "linux," he concluded, "sux."
Don't think that you can change his mind; email campaigns and sites such as this one have failed to draw a response. He's probably paid to spout FUD so just ignore him.

Hate to burst your bubble, but I have witnessed cheats and hacks for EQ that would shame the developers. Of course, I haven't seen them used in a destructive manner; the only people who have them belong to some sort of "white-hat" non-abusive group. I'm not one of those people so I don't know exactly what the full capabilities of their hacked clients are, but I do know for a fact that they have full access to GM commands.

But since such exploits aren't wide-spread, I'd say that EQ meets the one important criteria from the article - hacking the game takes more effort than 99% of the cheaters are willing to give.
