A worthy and intelligent comment. I applaud you on the lack of cursing, trolling, or commenting on the personal characteristics of the originator of this thread.

Wow, a website that publishes my birthday and mother's maiden name, along with all my pets' names! Perhaps next year they will publish my social security and driver's license numbers. I mean, the public has the right to know, right???

  3. Am I the only person here who is offended by calling this poor person "Napalm Girl"? I feel it really diminishing her and what happened to her. While others here pointed out her name, I will not, as I feel the victim to the event deserves some anonymity, given her age when it happened and the horrific event itself. Please give her the dignity she deserves. And, please do not use my alias as a pun against her. I have been using it for years, only to indicate certain habits I did have (and thusly richly deserve the alias) during the 60's and 70's (yes, I saw the photo when it was first published). So please, stop calling her this atrocious name.

  4. You are right. I stand corrected and apologize to all children of 12 years. I have learned from my mistake.

  5. Wow!!! The intelligence and courage of this reply is astounding. AC has some the most amazing debate skills for a 12 year old.

  8. Develop a hand-over plan on Ask Slashdot: Intelligently Moving From IT Into Management? · · Score: 1

You should develop a hand-over plan. Once hired, the new admin and you should agree upon certain aspects of the plan. 1. A very thorough background check should be performed. The further back, the better. 2. During the vetting process make sure more people than you interview the candidates. Trust your qualified team members, even if pulled from the user pool. 3. Once hired and on-boarded, turn the keys to the kingdom over to the admin. That is why you hired him/her, to replace you as IT Mgr. An untrusted IT Mgr. is worthless. 4. You and the admin should agree a timeline and certain milestones, upon which you relinquish certain responsibilities at that milestone. Unless the admin proves subpar, at which point you start looking for a new admin. For instance, at 30 days in, you step back and turn all acct mgt. over to the new admin, totally. I suggest the whole timeline take no more than 6 months, and if you can develop a quicker one, the better. 5. Develop a root password mgt. system. Every time the root password is changed, it is locked in a restricted access safe. And, SUDO is always used.

  9. Experience with charities, churches, etc. on Ask Slashdot: Getting Exchange and SQL Experience? · · Score: 1

Coming into this a bit late, and scanned the comments. What I am about to suggest may have already been brought up . . . The TechNet idea is a great one to load and play with at home. You might also seek out small orgs that cannot pay for admin work, like churches, charities, etc. and volunteer to do their admin work for them. You will probably need to load and support open source products, which is a minus for the experience part. But, you can draw parallels between your work at home and the experiences at these other places. Not that you will convince a corp recruiter. But, it might get you into a medium sized place where you can gain the experience the big boys want. And keep up with the certs. That will also smooth the road. Play the long game.
