I teach my kids two things about a real attack.
1) If you cannot avoid a fight, incapacitate as quickly as possible.
2) There are NO RULES! Anything goes.
This is best handled by either taking out a knee (something like 8 - 10 pounds of pressure on the front of the knee can break it) or kicking / hitting / grabbing a guy in the groin. I know in the real world that the attacker is not going to fight fair. Why should I expect myself, or my kids, to follow some code? The only way to even potentially avoid serious injury or death in a real attack is to incapacitate the attacker as quickly and efficiently as possible. If you do nothing, you run the risk of rape or death. If you fight, you run the risk of rape or death. Seems like the person potentially has nothing to lose, especially since most attackers are not going to say "I'm just going to knock you out and take your purse / wallet." You don't know their intentions.
