Yes, the finnish, estonian and Hungarian are related, at least by language. Yes, we all came from Asia. So these mummies may be our ancestors. The relation between these people is now established by looking at their languages (finnish and estonian are really quite close, finnish and hungarian as not that close, but still deemed to be related)

OK, Darwin server is free and runs on a renge of OSs. But what encoders are there for it? I'd be interedted in audio encoders... Are there any for free? And what players? Apart from the Apple QuickTime, which runs only on Mac and Winsuxx

  4. I'm quite offended: I use Linux, and I like Java on Why Linux Lovers Jilt Java · · Score: 1
Seriously, I have been using Linux for a long long time, and Java from it's early days. And I like them both. But I'm not the religios Linux guy.

But maybe this is the greatest problem: Java is not only for Linux. Maybe this is the problem with the ortodox Linux people: you can actually use Linux to develop an application, that will run elsewhere as well. Oh my! You may use Linux for development, and then you may use other platforms for deployment. Those that are maybe more scalable. Or simply: those, that are run by the company you work for. Or your clients.

And the other itch: it's not GPL. Those devils! But what is the problem with running non-GPL applications on Linux. Anyone has any problem with running Oracle on Linux, for example? Should they GPL it just because it runs on Linux as well?

And why is that, that Linux people just ignore the news that Sun is actually making an official JDK port for Linux? I see all rants and raves about how bad Sun treats Java on Linux. Well, it didn't support it less then other ports in the early days, and now they even have an official one. See: this is the third officially supported platform, and Linux people should be happy about it.

But maybe I am evil myself, as I see and use other platforms than Linux (and no, not M$).

  5. URLs can't hold these characters on Registrations Now Accepted For Asian Domain Names · · Score: 1

AFAIK the RFC describing URLs limits the valid characters in a URL to basically lower and upper case letters and some marks (like slash, underscore, etc.) But not even european letters are allowed. If so, having a chinese domain name is fine, but you can't have a URL pointing to it. Or can you?

  6. Re:Alternative Storage Media on Alternatives To The Floppy Disk? · · Score: 1

about the Sony Memory Stick: you can get nice adapters like a USB and a floppy adapter (!!), so you can read / write it like a 3.5" floppy drive. the stick itself is small and sturdy, no big deal to carry around. and you can get up to 64MBs with it at the moment. I don't know about the pricetag though :)

  7. We'd need a complete laptom comparison on Crusoe and Benchmarks · · Score: 1

I see the point made all over this discussion that a Crusoe laptol should be compared to a similar intel-based one, and that the decrease in computing power is a sacrifice for the increase in battery life. IMHO the natural thing would be to have a comparison of two comparable laptops, one Crusoe and one intel, with performance AND power consumptions figures. And it would be quite visible wether the Crusoe compromise is worth it or not.

If I'm a Napster user in an other country and a US court rules that Napster has to be shut down, I won't be able to use it either. Why? Does a US court have ANY jurisdiction whatsoever on an other country? No. Still, I'm also on the recieving end of punishment.

Let's face it: the web knows no borders, therefore no nation state should regulate it. As bad as the UN is, it's still over the nations, and even the cubans the North Korea have votes in there :)
