I've heard of this sort of professional bitterness amongst the academic types. I suppose it serves a purpose.

I personally think it is much better to take the optimistic path and consider the weak points as challenges rather than as the point of departure for mockery.

This message smacks of mockery through and through, mainly with the overuse-of-the-bolden-tags, as they just might say in Germany.

I belive this project was inspired by my post of Monday June 12, @04:24AM EDT.

Ok, sure it's just a weak joke from a potential troll- but I do believe boards like slashdot are the perfect place to store such pads. No such conspicuous files to explain, and mountains of data to sift through to even find the millions of instances stored 'round the world.

Someone mentioned in an earlier post that no one would trouble themselves to check all 50 million variations, but I think this would be childs play to the NSA. Perhaps by mixing up portions of pads randomly you could greatly increases the magnitude of what's going on. This would require rather bulky decoding instructions though.

A much more useful idea would be to have a certain webserver (or maybe a standard protocol for all servers) generate a pad with every X web hits (up to a certain quota per day, and at either random or regular intervals), stored on a random message board. The randomness could even be taken from something cool like 'sub-ether' noise on the network, for a touch of Trekkie flair, or any of the myraid techniques used to generate randomness on a machine.

Also, this would allow a type of slang to develop, expressing swift and accurate decoding instructions. As an example; "..dot ..3 ...last thursday." could be buried in an email under other pretenses, and indicate (presuming regular intervals) slashdot's 3 am pad, 3pm pad, 3rd pad of the day, 3rd from the last or 3+x from the y (x being some third source like a stock price fluctuation rounded specifically down). The proper interpretation of the hints could be pre determined by the parties before hand.

This whole idea of 'soft export' encryption certainly has a lot of room for refinement, but it could come in very handy from a web cafe terminal in Europe, when Harrison Ford and the CIA are hot on your hax0r trail.

no need to belabor the point. I understand that some people must stick to specifics. My point is more along the lines of 'all upcoming titles are merely refinements of previous game technique excepting Halo, which looks to be in a questionable position as regards to its release on the platform known as the playstation 2 (two).' Is that more satisfying?

You also seem to miss the point about the FF series sa an MMRPG, a funny I make in response to the typical newbie experience with MMRPG's, which often amounts to little more than corpse retrieval.

Cutscenes are indeed referred to as FMV in certain circles it's true. meanwhile, they almost always suck ass. They distract from the actual experience of playing games, ie, manipulating elements of a system acording to certain rules, with some goal in mind. FMV is too passive, and in my gamerly opinion should be avoided at all cost.

I will try to be less abrupt with my posts if how bout you just relax a little.

  7. Lego for Art on Lego Institutes Bulk Ordering · · Score: 1

I know it's a little late to chime in, but I would really like to use legos to make good looking murals. I have a bunch of existing art that would work well, and I imagine it would be easiest if I could convert the artwork to CMYK and use the seps as a map.
It would be best if legos came in a few more specific colors, particularly Magenta and Cyan. They already have the yellow and black. But if necessary, I could use the blue and red bricks.

Maybe one of you coders could whip up a little utility to help me map the conversion. See, simple substitution wouldn't look right, the color sep would have to be recalculated with the new color inks in mind. (Not that I know much about color modelling)

Another strategy I could use is to recalculate these values in a pre-press program that allows you to substitute the inks but still gives a realistically toned set of color seps. Anyone know about anything like that? Maybe all of them do it? I'm familiar with Photoshop, but I've never come across a feature like that.

crap. You should've gone to e3. It is clear that Sega is ripping it up on the creative business model front, something Sony is not prepared to compete with. I have access to each of the current platforms as well as the ps2, and I have to say, the Dreamcast can certainly hold it's own.

The few honestly creative titles are being developed for the Dreamcast and the PC, not for the ps2. The only thing I've seen on ps2 worth mentioning is Unreal Tournament, a pc game i've been playing for many many months (read decades in the video game market).

My prediction: the Dreamcast 2 will ship with a DVD player and braodband support by summer or spring next year, but otherwise be the same machine inside.

A lot of people hear been badmouthing Adobe's motivation in trying to do something about this leak, but the truth is, it costs a company a bunch of money to think up features. Implementing them is often the easier portion of production.

Is it too much to imagine that enterprising managers at JASC software and Corel and the folks involved in the gimp can extrapolate these features and beat Adobe to market? Photoshop is dramatically more complex than any of these other products, simply by way of their pre-press precision and color modelling. But as most consumers only want web graphic editors, beating Adobe to market with their own refinements is a piece of cake.

This could be a major hit in the pocketbook, if you can imagine that ceratin features and refinements may sway the purchasing dollars of hundreds, thousands, maybe tens of thousands of people. The managers at Adobe have an obligation to protect that potential revenue for the investors.

Those of you that can't see this are certainly not cut out to run a corporation. Not yet anyway. maybe after college you can cut your teeth on a small department, but don't run crying to momma when everything falls to crap around you. seen it a million times already (in other managers) and I'm not even 30 yet!!!

By way of disclaimer, I am not affiliated with Adobe or any other companies in this market, merely a critical, semi-aware observer.

This is essential for Photoshop (or the Gimp).

I know Easel and USB are seperate issues, but even if USB finally finds some solid Linux implementation, supporting my wonderful mouse will be beyond my meager coding skills and outside the scope of my schedule. Does anyone know of plans to support some of these more modern devices? Is there a particular distro to watch, for developments in this area?
