  1. Can't Debian sue them too? on Xandros 1.0 · · Score: 1

I would think that much of Xandros's niceness comes from the fact that it is Debian based... Now if you use all those goodies and not abiding by the GPL, you can probably be sued by Debian too?

First world countries have almost non-existent population growthrates. What does that mean for their economies? Well it is arguable that if the amount of possible consumers do not grow, then your economy won't grow...

So where are populations growing? Third world countries. Only problem is these countries will never reach their potential if life is a daily struggle against poverty, disease and hunger...

Seriously this probably only affects a few big players like IBM and Zaxus (ex Baltimore) who supply solutions that are used in Banking sector. There is at least one local South-African player in the market that will blow anyone else out of the water with both price and performance.

  5. How about adding ssh support? on Subversion Hits Alpha · · Score: 1

One of the great things about CVS is that I can use ssh with it,
it gives me the following advantages:
    1) I can access CVS server indirectly by doing tunneling.
    2) My code is encrypted on the wire so I can access it over public
networks without the possibility of someone hijacking it.
    3) I can use PKI to authenticate someone to the CVS. (not as
important to me as the fact that data is encrypted)

Now I've heard people coming up with solutions like using .htaccess
and SSL. Why would I want to use SSL if I can use ssh? Are all
of us now suddenly supposed to be openssl coders? It must be
easy for people to develop tools like cervisia for subversion (with
    SSL)...

  6. South Africa has been doing this since 1980's on When Looks Can Kill · · Score: 1

    Hi,

Not many of you might know it or believe it, but
the South Afican arms industry has been using this
in their planes since about mid-1980. Although the system was excellent and worked well in the war in Angola, the only weak link was probably the missiles called the Kukri missile. The US missiles of now and that time are probably superior to the Kukri.

In the early 90's they also moved this technology to their Rooivalk helicopters.

You probably don't believe this. As a South African Electronic engineer I find it interesting that people believe nothing good comes from Africa. Personally I prefer being under than over estimated...

  11. This is why unix is power... on Linux Implementation For 2500 Workstations? · · Score: 1

Unix is Power? Well although I'm not the first to come up with it, you can blame me if you want to :)

Let me give you a real life example of why I can say so..
A while ago I was sitting on the corporate network of a financial institution. I was developing some PHP on a linux machine (A) which was sitting on the DMZ of their firewall. I connected to this machine through the only connection I was allowed, ssh. A few problems arose with some systems of other customers which was about 2000 km's away. The linux box was only allowed access to one IP (B) outside the institutions network. Thus I connected to box A with ssh, from there to B with ssh. B wasn't allowed to either of the final 2 customers network, so I had to go via box C to box D and E respectively. So from 2000 km's away and through 3 intermediate machines, I was developing code in C on box C, debugging communication with cryptographic hardware, etc.... while fixing some bugs in perl on box E as well as debugging a Postgres database, and all of the above communication was encrypted.

The only limit you have with Unix is your own skill and imagination....
