Certain giant tortoises have been known to have a lifespan of up to 240 years! Namely the Aldabra Giant Tortoises, Geochelone gigantea. I guess we will all be able to sleep easy tonight knowing that these animals outlive us. Or maybe we can study the genetics of these animals and increase our own lifespan? Great, then we can overcrowd ourselves even more. This along with viagra and we better start colonizing in space pretty damn soon.

Well, back when we still had a local Apple II user group here in town, we always met at the library. They never had a problem with us using one of their meeting rooms. The great thing about this was that the room had all the power we ever needed to hook up computers, etc. Anyway, if you haven't checked in at your local public library I suggest doing so.
As another suggestion, how about a clubhouse at someones apartments or condo? I know that in my condo association, I have free use of the clubhouse anytime I want. This may not be powered out as well as you might like, but it will give you a place to meet.
Heh, if the original poster was concerned about copyright, then I wish he would have summarized the article into his own words that made some sence. Instead, he left out very important pieces of sentences that caused the whole posting to become unreadable.
Of course, I don't understand a word of the gibberish in the original article either. Guess having those words left out really didn't make a difference for me.:)
How hard is cut and paste? Don't even try reading the gibberish in this submission. Below is a proper cut and paste of the article.
"The Neural Theory of Language Project run by Jerome Feldman and Science Board member George Lakoff at the University of California at Berkeley aims at answering the question: How can the physical brain give rise to concepts and language? In a recent breakthrough the collaborators have now isolated, via computational modeling techniques, the kinds of neural structures that can carry out dynamic mental models and separated out their neural computational structure from the kinds of parameterized structures that provide input to and take output from dynamic models. This allows them to create formal representations for the parameterized structures in which they can describe concepts and the linguistic constructions. "
Excellent...this means that there won't be any EFF funds going to waste on such a petty court case. We need to keep those funds around for real violations of civil liberties.
Tech courts? Why not medical courts for when there are health issues on the table. What about seperate courts for bank fraud? There are plenty of areas where Judges are not experts. What matters are that Judges are experts in LAW! The burden of making a case understandable to the Judge and jury lies on the lawyers. If you have a tech case, hire a lawyer that is able to get your point across clearly to even non-tech people.
According to this (http://www.kabalarians.com/male/tjisana.htm) analysis of his name, Tjisana has quite a bit more to worry about than being refered to as female......

Of course first of all, *nix is an educational program all in itself. Besides that, check out the software at linuxberg.com....I did a quick check and there was some educational software listed for KDE and Gnome....
IIRC...the ICS in Win98 SE just sets up a gateway. all you need to do is configure your linux box to point to the Win98 box as its default gateway. Make sure you fill in the nameserver information of the internet provider and you should be working.
I never disputed the fact that napster is used mostly for illegal purposes, but it does have a legitimate use. Check out http://artist.napster.com/...a list of unknown bands on napster and keywords you can type in to search for them. Or try http://artist.napster.com/newartists.html and you will find the category option that you speak of. I admit that it would be nice if they integrated this feature into their client, but it is there. All it takes is a visit to their website.
That policy is between the school and the student. Let the battle be fought there. Metallica needs to get back to the point of their whole issue. Metallica going after schools for allows Napster traffic would be like Blizzard (Id Software...etc) going after schools because they allow ftp traffic. Both ftp and napster have legitimate uses, you can't expect a provider to shut down an entire protocol because of the mistakes of a few. Granted that napster is used far more for transmission of copywrited material that ftp is, but both are used for legal and illegal uses.
"......claiming that these university defendants should be held liable for copyright infringement for their knowing facilitation of the massive copyright infringements occurring through Napster."
Ok, what's next? Should Napster's upstream provider be added as a defendant? How about the property management company that leases them the space to house thier physical servers? How about every single place that my network traffic hops through to get to napster and back? I guess my place of employment should be a defendant also since I have accessed Napster from there. The list goes on and on. This is just plain stupid. If Metallica and partners have a problem with Napster, fight the battle with Napster. There is no reason to bring others into this pitiful waste of time.
I keep canarys in every room of my house. If it dies, I know it's time to leave the room. Last year the bird in my bedroom died and I slept on the couch for a week. The autopsy report came back and explained little birdie died from cancer. I got another bird for the bedroom and am happily sleeping in my bed again. But, I'll tell you what...those cages sure can begin to stink. I wish I had something to make my house smell better. Any slashdot suggestions?
As others have mentioned, go with NNTP. This is the method I would use. Just set up a private news server and everyone can use their favorite newsreader to d/l the messages and read/write offline.
You could also have people try an offline web browser...several windows versions are listed at http://www.davecentral.com/offline.html . This won't let them write offline (well they can always type it up in their favorite text editor and copy and paste), but they will be able to read the messages offline.
Check out this program called NTFSDOS Pro. It's a bit pricey at $149 US but it does allow you to boot from a floppy and then read and write to NTFS partitions. I remember a couple months ago reading somewhere that someone was developing a freeware version of this, but I am unable to find any info on it at the moment.......
Well, if this is a large company, there should be some equivelent of an audit department. If so, I would immediately go above your boss and let them know the pressure you are getting to install software without the proper licensing. If you are dealing with a small company and your boss' word is ultimate law, you are dealing with more of an ethical quesiton. Do you value your job or your integrity more? Personally, I would tell my boss that I refused to install any software without licensing unless he gave me a written order to install it and it was all approved by him. If he did so, I would happily install the software and let "the man" come down on him. If he refused, I would be looking for another job.
Well, here you go Firestone...you can turn your fuck up into big profit!
