Don't you mean 1Kx? (Since you are the grammar nazi)

Aside from saying that your math seems seriously flawed (calculating users from posts on Usenet???), not to metion using Corel (which was already in trouble and trying Linux to stay afloat) as an example (while completely ignoring ever-widening vendor support), I don't even know where to begin with saying how wrong this is. A lot of dotcom's lost their shirts in the last year, and yet the Internet and e-business lives on. Why would you declare Linux dead? It doesn't make sense.

What are you talking about? That is the Linux-Mandrake icon. Sure looks like it to me. Unless CmdrTaco pulled a fast one after reading this, think before you speak.

Actually, my understanding is that Madrake's normal convention is to go from X.1, X.2 to the next X.0. So, since they have released 7.2, it is their normal procedure that the next one will be 8.0. Frenchies, go figure.

  6. Re:Inevitably, Napster had to go legit on Napster Adding "Protection Layer" · · Score: 1

I remeber back before Napster, when I had all the MP3's I wanted. We used to trade them (along with massive amounts of porn and software) on Carnegie Mellon's student network. The school basically had the stance of "See no evil, Hear no evil", and as long as there was a password on the shares, it was okay with them. So, everyone made their password "bob" and everyone was happy. All Napster did was provide search capabilites and make it easier to trade across domains. But, It's just like Dr. Touretzky's DeCSS page. Once the cat is out of the bag, people will find a way. Furthermore, the more they are offended by their antagonist (MPAA, record companies), the more they will work to find a better way to do it. While Gnutella is a massive bandwidth hog, their will be a better way invented soon. Bet on it. And the more laws and court ruling that are thrown in the way, the more the online community will dance around the letter of the law (until common sense breaks out).

But, that's what Unix did and look what happened to those assholes. That why there's so much talk against proprietary crap - the last thing we want to do is fork the kernel. Unless Linus start taking it down the shitter (and he's not), there's every reason to avoid it.

Kill 'em all and let God sort it out later...
