Actually, ogg has plugins for XMMS, Winamp, and even Windows Media Player. You can get more info from the FAQ or just go straight to the software page, which also has players for most modern OSes (sorry Amiga). Thanks.
Let's be realistic about who we're dealing with here. You really think that all terroist's have the technology & the know-how to write their own crypto??? I'm not saying that none of them do, or that it would never happen. However, I believe an illustrative point is the fact that some of the terrorists disposed of Arabic-language flight manuals in a dumpster behind the motel they were staying in. Can they buy the talent? Yes. Will they? Maybe not, operational mistakes and mis-judgements will be made. Either way, I think that we can agree that it's a bad idea. Thanks.
We should all agree with the statement that it would be very helpful in preventing terroist attacks. Of course it would be! So would random house-to-house searches! However, what was not asked was "Do you think we should?", "Would you be willing to trade this liberty away?", etc. Poll questions are oftentimes baited - remember they're looking for a story more than public opinion. Don't believe the hype. Thanks.
My point wasn't that I or anyone else could dictate what they play and I appreciate you pointing out how stupid that would be. My point was that 1)These are a lot of "bread & butter" songs for modern rock & classic rock stations (ClearChannel owns one of each in Louisville) and more imporatantly 2)These songs have no relation to the tradgedy & it would take a stretch to get them there - therefore I think the list is fake or some idiot's musings. If the posts below are true, it's the former. If the update is true, it's the latter. Thanks.
P.S. Banning some of these songs would be worse than banning my sig because it talks about killing. Of course, I'm a Marine, so guess who I'd be killing...
In related news, all Tom Clancy books were pulled from Wal-Mart's shelves today. They mention a plane being deliberatly crashed into the Capitol Buliding (Debt of Honor & Executive Orders).
Will that be posted as well if Michael gets emailed that shit from his AOL buddies, too? C'mon!
Read the list. There is no way in hell this is real. This has got to be a joke. Tom Petty "Free Fallin"? Red Hot Chili Peppers "Under the Bridge"? Led Zeppelin "Stairway to Heaven"? Steve Miller "Jet Airliner"? Metallica "Enter Sandman"?
My ass. This list is obviouly BS. While I could see some of the songs on the list being banned someone who's over-reacting, a good read through it makes it look like crap../ editors jumped the gun on this one, it think. Even if ClearChannel has lost it's mind, these are some of the most popular songs of all time and have NOTHING to do with what tragicly happened in NYC. It looks like someone did a word search, made up some crap, and started distributing this FUD to mess with people. I'll probably get emailed this crap along with a few chain letters from my little sister later today. *sigh*
Most lawmakers don't understand it, how it works, or why it is necessary for legitimate uses. They get briefings from staffers who don't understand it, who got briefed by people with an agenda. We need to put more efforts into Congressional education, IMHO.
That was the closed captioning output being streamed through an IRC channel. It's being typed in real-time by a third person. Tom Clancy was being interviewed live , in person, in CNN's studios, on TV. Sorry about the confusion.
I logged this from CNN's IRC live feed [edited slightly for readability], while I was watching it on TV. He says that the evnts of yesterday wouldn't be believable in a book (and he's right, of course). I especially love the way they switch to New York as soon as he points a finger at them...

Ironically enough, with the AGP driver for win32 installed (& also with the reference drivers), I'm having strange stability problems in Win98 SE. Email me & we'll arrange a prisoner exchange.;-)
Ok, here's my signature. Here's a CD-ROM with the only copy we have, honest! All users, lets see... how about every Open Source Fan that Adobe just lost as a customer? That should cover it. And profit? We, uh... only made twenty bucks. I swear. Here it is!
No shit! I want to have my computer loud as hell! If I could add side pipes & have them blow fucking fire like Gone In 60 Seconds, I would! I have a totally obnoxious tower with fans out the ass just to pester the shit out of my fat-ass roomates. Quieter Computers - BAH!
Of course this is still very cool, don't get me wrong...;-)
No, I think that the./ community more surprised than anything. MS has a tendancy to wait after there is a public outcry against one of their policies and then change it down the road in an "upgrade", so that they don't have to acknowledge any actual fault. (Sort of like the Cuban Missle Crisis, where the US agreed to move the missle out of Turkey six months later to avoid any immediate apparances of reciprosity or capitulation.) It's nice to see them finally responding to customer criticism in a timely fashion. Maybe they will "embrace and extend" this idea to all their software and services...
They must have read the article on Slashdot the other day and freaked out. OH SHIT, SLASHDOT'S ON TO US!!! Now if we could only get the same results with their other business practices...
The Marine Corps and Navy are about to embark on an new project called Navy-Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI). Actually the Navy began last year, and the Marine Corps will follow in Fall 2002. Under this agreement, which is with EDS, Microsoft, Dell, and Yap!, we will buy EVERYTHING as a service. It is a 5 year contract (with, I believe a 2 or 3 year possible extension).
Here's how it will work: First, we will sell the NMCI vendors all of our existing infrastructure. PC's, printers, routers, cabling, etc. Then they will sell us "seats". Each seat will come with 2 accounts, i.e. 68,000 seats equals 136,000 possible users. Each seat will include a PC with an OS, all applications needed (in theory), network access, 1 printer per 20 seats, and support (guaranteed problem resolution in 48 hours). They will provide everything, once again, in theory. We will get it all by paying them a monthly fee per seat. Now, I can't get into my personal opinion of the project, but this is important insight into where the market is going. Entities will pay a subscribtion fee and will get their entire computing infrastructure. Of course they will pay more, but all the headaches are out of their hands and they can fine the vendors for any problems. For more information on NMCI, I suggest you visit the MARCORSYSCOM website on NMCI.
Pay attention, because this is the way the government and corporate America is beginning to view future computing policy. We will probably begin to see a large shift in employment of computer types away from large organizations and towards the vendors who want to provide this level of support.
Don't get me wrong. I run two different flavors on my box at home, a third at work, and love it. Of course I'll take linux any day. Unfortunately, it's still just short of passing the "Mom" test. However, I didn't want to sound like the rest of the jack-offs who have nothing better to say than, "Forget it all and run [insert fav distro here]." And, given the choice between Mac and Win, I'll choose Windows.
But, is this possible? Will they let you do it, or will they attempt some digital controls to prevent this from happening? Even if you do have to pay the full fee, it'd still be less than Win2000 server with all the licenses I would think.
The difference is that the 2.4 kernel did include everything that they said it would. And if it didn't, notification would be put out at once. Microsoft announces bullshit features for their products months and sometimes even over a year ahead of time and then sweeps them under the rug when it doesn't pan out. It's the willful deception in their marketing that's the problem. I remeber when they were saying that what turned into Win2000 Pro was going to combine NT Workstation, NT Server, & 98. Nope. Now it'll be WINDOWS XP - ohhh! ahhh! That will save all of us from ourselves. Yeah, right. The sad part is, I'm probably going to have to abandon my argument in the question of Win vs. Mac, that Windows is more configurable. Those fucks don't even trust us with our own PC's any more. XP won't let people do shit if MS doesn't approve.
It should be noted that he is resigning, not retiring. It that a usually significant nuance? Yes. Is it in this case? I don't know, but it could indicate something deeper behind the scenes. Or not...
;-)
Let the paranoia begin!
CNN is also reporting this as well here. The interesting part is that it is the result of a civil investigative demand. I'd be interested to know who did it. *cough* Napster *cough* ;-)
See my comment above. Not necessarily wrong, just poorly worded.
