I see the point you are trying to make, but it's wrong, and misguided.
The right to free speech means the government cannot impede your right to speak out. That is not happening here.
By your logic, a company making you sign a 'non-disclosure' agreement is also inhibiting your right to free spech, as your job will be terminated if you 'speak up'. Your employer is in no way impeding your rights.

Please don't mix up 'capable of' and 'designed for'. They are two different things.
The 'internet-only' mode of Outlook is an afterthought; as is their internet mail. The product was designed as a canned mail system.
I'm not saying Outlook can't do Internet mail; it does it reasonably well. But it's main purpose, the reason it has all those 'annoying' features is because it was designed to work with other copies of Outlook, and MS Exchange server.
And no software or technote is an excuse for being an idiot.;0
It means... that the IT manager doesn't know his job, and is not properly auditing security. Period.
For all the toys, code, and technology us IT people get to 'play' with at work, the bottom line is all too often forgotten: IT is there to provide computing facilities for a company and to maintain them appropriately.
If the IT staff left a hole like this, they should be yelled at.
Curiously enough, this problem is especially prevalent at shops WITHOUT senior type systems people. Lots of kids.
It's funny how hacker kids seem to know everything about security, but put them in an IT department, and they 'forget' all kinds of things like voicemail, door entry codes, leaving terminals logged in. Of course, they are REALLY busy fuckign with all the unix boxes 'just in case'.
Strange. I have several dozen users using outlook 2000, and other users using Eudora, Netscape, OL Express, and heck I use unix mail (pine etc...). ANd to boot, many versions of each.
OL2000 seems to have no problem sending mail to others. And we are NOT using an exchange server that translates mail for people.
Now there IS a problem, that may or may not be related, whereby some attachments sent in OL can only be read by other OL users.. but that usually has to do with RTF messages (using embedded objects instead of attachments or some such thing).
For those that don't know, Outlook was really designed to be run with MS Exchange server. The server can be configured to handle mail translation for it's clients, so internally, an office can have the benefits of a more advanced(?) mail system (in an office workgroup sense), and externally, the world can get ASCII.
NOt sure where the big problem is though...
You know, I still hate MS, but after a few years in a larger network... I've come to realize that all MS tools are not bad, they are just generally used for the wrong things. This is partly (mostly?) Microsoft's fault. Saying 'using OL with exchange server provides an excellent messaging platform for your company' is very different than saying 'use outlook for mail, it rocks'. They want people to use their crap for everythingl.
But some of it, if used in the way intended, can be useful to a large degree.
Gimme a break dude.

We all know damn well that most users use it to pirate music. Sheesh. ANd in this case, that IS the point.

As a side note.... even if napster is told to shut down in court, due to being sued, that STILL does not make the software 'illegal'. It only makes it illegal for napster to provide their service.

If the RIAA said 'Student X is using your network to pirate MP3 in violation of XXXXX laws' then the university is bound to act. Several universities have said this already.
If they say 'ban this software from your campus' they are NOT obliged to act, the software itself is not illegal.
No.. Many books *are* censored, in the US and in Canada, and in other countries, and they are NOT permitted to be on the shelf. Or the library choses not to carry them.

But a Library? Hey. Libraries chose what software to lend out. Libraries chose what books to keep. They an ALSO chose how to provide you with network access.

This means you didn't ask them to send you a cuecat.
If you DID ask them to send you a cuecat, you could perhaps be held to certain terms.
If you didn't, they are out of luck.
The point is, the license agreement doesn't matter.
You didn't ask for it; they can't attach any 'terms' to something you received unsolicited and for free.
You open the mail, something is in it. They cannot 'require' you to agree to terms with it. Especially 'license agreements'.
Why? This is the same, if you think about it, as companies that used to mail you 'merchanidse' and then if oyu didn't return it, they send you a bill. This is illegal now. This is the same thing.
I mean, it's fine.. but if they try to prosecute it, they are in trouble.
The article mentions, right at the bottom, that some microsoft employees groan that it uses linux.
The editor then ads that 'NT is the preferred platform at Microsoft' . DUH.
Hardly a groundbreaking article there guys.. of COURSE some microsoft drones aren't going to like it.
They did NOT say that 'Microsoft is very unhappy with the current state of the game servers' or anything. They just mentioned that some 'employees' didn't like it.

1) When ever anyone (website, user, or anyone in life, say a business) asks you for any personal information (anything at all!), ask yourself whether this information should be necessary to complete the transcaction, and act accordginly.
When Radio Shack asks for your name, say 'Sorry, you don't need to know it.'. If they have a problem with that, leave the store immediately.
Same with any other store. Use discretion of course...
When a website asks you for anything, even your email address, ask yourself why they need it. If it's to mail you a 'password' to the site, perhaps they do need it. Perhaps not.
Also, you can set up (though for most this won't help) a mail server in several ways so that you can receive mail on multiple accounts, so you can tell what's what.

The 'internet-only' mode of Outlook is an afterthought; as is their internet mail. The product was designed as a canned mail system.
I'm not saying Outlook can't do Internet mail; it does it reasonably well. But it's main purpose, the reason it has all those 'annoying' features is because it was designed to work with other copies of Outlook, and MS Exchange server.
And no software or technote is an excuse for being an idiot.
It means... that the IT manager doesn't know his job, and is not properly auditing security. Period.
For all the toys, code, and technology us IT people get to 'play' with at work, the bottom line is all too often forgotten: IT is there to provide computing facilities for a company and to maintain them appropriately.
If the IT staff left a hole like this, they should be yelled at.
Curiously enough, this problem is especially prevalent at shops WITHOUT senior type systems people. Lots of kids.
It's funny how hacker kids seem to know everything about security, but put them in an IT department, and they 'forget' all kinds of things like voicemail, door entry codes, leaving terminals logged in. Of course, they are REALLY busy fuckign with all the unix boxes 'just in case'.
Strange. I have several dozen users using outlook 2000, and other users using Eudora, Netscape, OL Express, and heck I use unix mail (pine etc...). ANd to boot, many versions of each.
OL2000 seems to have no problem sending mail to others. And we are NOT using an exchange server that translates mail for people.
Now there IS a problem, that may or may not be related, whereby some attachments sent in OL can only be read by other OL users.. but that usually has to do with RTF messages (using embedded objects instead of attachments or some such thing).
For those that don't know, Outlook was really designed to be run with MS Exchange server. The server can be configured to handle mail translation for it's clients, so internally, an office can have the benefits of a more advanced(?) mail system (in an office workgroup sense), and externally, the world can get ASCII.
NOt sure where the big problem is though...
You know, I still hate MS, but after a few years in a larger network... I've come to realize that all MS tools are not bad, they are just generally used for the wrong things. This is partly (mostly?) Microsoft's fault. Saying 'using OL with exchange server provides an excellent messaging platform for your company' is very different than saying 'use outlook for mail, it rocks'. They want people to use their crap for everythingl.
But some of it, if used in the way intended, can be useful to a large degree.

If you DID ask them to send you a cuecat, you could perhaps be held to certain terms.

You didn't ask for it; they can't attach any 'terms' to something you received unsolicited and for free.
You open the mail, something is in it. They cannot 'require' you to agree to terms with it. Especially 'license agreements'.
Why? This is the same, if you think about it, as companies that used to mail you 'merchanidse' and then if oyu didn't return it, they send you a bill. This is illegal now. This is the same thing.
I mean, it's fine.. but if they try to prosecute it, they are in trouble.
The univeristy should be charging those who have access for personal use for the amount of traffic they generate at the gateway.
In other words, the cost to students should reflect the cost to the university.
This is basic economics.

It should not be up to carriers to 'selectively' ban services and protocols. Not at all. They are providing network access. Period.

People, they are offering a SERVICE. Believe it or not, lots of roothat users are *NOT* really computer savvy yet, and don't WANT to do it all manually.

Uhh.. if it's *stated* then they are showing why their patent is unique compared to it. That's what prior art was all about.
FYI.. simply showing prior art once a patent is granted is not always enough to overturn it.
Showing that the patent application KNEW about prior art and did not disclose it IS a good way to turn it over.
Cisco isnt' saying they invented NAT. They are patenting a security mechanism used for inbound NAT connections, that appears to deal with stateful inspection.
Well... it's prior art unless Cisco wrote the RFC, which I believe they did.

It is not a 'sane' business practice to expect people to not do something that it is their right to do. If this fails because people only want the gear to rip it apart, that is THEIR fault for not undertsanding their market.
Everyone is very concerned about their rights. So they should be. But let me ask this.
How could the FBI perform their wiretaps in a legal manner, without enraging us all about our 'rights'?
How could carnivore-like stuff work without violating our rights? Or should it be wrong altogether?

Like the article says; the way they have things set up, it's no big deal. A quick restart, and they are back to a known.
Remember, it doesn't *MATTER* what the OS is capable of, only that the apps they need to run run with acceptable reliability.
These aren't flight control computers with realtime acquisition and feedback.. those are custom built.
They are PC's, for general purpose stuff.
