besides, that isn't the point at all. software licensing techniques do not impinge on the obsolesence of the instruction set.

Maybe next time hesitate with the automobile metaphor:

Yeah. This is akin to a beaten-up, smoke-belching old piece of crap whizzing down the freeway at a stunning 40MPH.
But, you know, if you add fuzzy dice, UFO lights and a big stereo, the owner will think that you won't notice that the thing is a worn-out piece of crap.

I would like to point out that all of the current automotive engineering strategies were designed within the first 20 (or so) years of production (with the exception of the wankel, emission controls, computers and abs all the rest is but refinement of obviously antique technology)

All of the super-turbo charging, multi cam 12 cylinder fuel injected goodness appeared at the dawn of the 'architecture' of the automobile. This does not impeed modern vehicles from ass kicking good performance in the slightest. The refinement of that platform has aged gracefully, and I argue the same for x86.

Mechanics are familiar with the 'internal combustion' architecture, the way deep coders and ee's are familiar with 'x86' architecture, and this serves to grease the skids towards wide spread acceptance and ease of use for both technologies. I guess this is the 'inertia' you speak of in action, but can you really argue that it is a bad thing? I don't think that innovation is always the shortest path between two points when you throw infrastructure into the equation.

I guess you could maybe consider the deisel to be analogous to the mips stuff? how bout electric/hybrid electric cars as the PPC? either way, metaphor or not, they were all designed at the turn of the century/in the 80's
