By extension then anyone could say I've Rot-24 all my files decrypting is against the law. At some point the best evidence rules must give way to common sense in that encryption that the average human mind can decrypt in realtime on the fly is no encryption at all.
I thought most all religions were based on some kind of science fiction or legend. Then over time the folklore just becomes fact when a better explination fails to come along.
In any event, Jedi seems like a better religion then any that Star Trek have come up with.
I have calcium in my bones but I am not calcium based because it's not the calcium that's alive. The Diatoms use silicon in the same way we use calcium. It's not the silicon that makes them alive. It's all the god damned carbon in their dna and cellular makeup that make them alive. Life will exist for other one celled animals without silicon. Silicon is not necessary for their life, just convinent for this organism to use. Life will not exist without the CARBON.
Silicon and Carbon are not the same shape in terms of bonding. Si is very large, 41 Angstroms larger (or in laymans terms it's radius is about 1.5 times that of Carbon.) Further SiO2 and CO2 are not the same shape when bonded. CO2 is a linear molecule wheras SiO2 is a complex tetrahedral matrix of interconnected atoms of the basic formula (SiO2)x.....
Silicon cannot support life the way carbon does. They have differing electronegativities yet almost the same electron affinity. They react in very different ways. Carbon is very much a nonmetal. Silicon a metalloid.
I'm a moderator right now as was going to mod this up for being funny but need I to straighten out something. Simply because there was an Xfiles episode showing life from silicon doesn't mean it's possible. Biochemistry is so complex and shape specific that simply having the same number of bonds as carbon and water will not make them react with other substances in place of carbon and water. Isoelectricity doesn't mean compatibility.
For this kind of research it's very hard to go double blind. Although I will agree both Barbies should have had the SAME dress on the basic method was still meaningful. I've seen far worse pass peer review.
I don't know where you went to school but ethical approval is nothing more than pre-censorship in this case. Ethical approval is meant to protect the subject from dangerous chemicals, surgery, severe emotional effects etc... There was nothing dangerous to the subjects here. The only danger was to the status quo at the science fair.
Her experiment was scientific. Whether she had a sample size needed to infer for the general population is not up for debate here. Her conclusion that her peers prefered the white Barbie is a fair conclusion based on her results.
Second, I see a "pattern of racial discrimination" in pro sports. Blacks are
"disproportionally represented" in pro sports and an equal opportunity lawsuit seems to be in order, particularly in the NBA.
I read the story this morning and concluded that her research method was sound. Her conclusion was reasonable. Although I didn't see the poster, based on my first two statements I would guess her presentation was scientific and unbiased.
It sounds to me like the teachers didn't approve of her topic regardless of what her message would be. A childrens science fair is no place for predjudice on the part of the educators present.
Had she been older and sent out a report for peer review showing how children prefered white Barbie dolls the study would be published. Mattel would use it to justify dumping Skipper in favor of adding the Barbie DSL Firewall and Router for the Barbie Dream House.
In short her science was sound. Her method correct. Her experiment somewhat visionary in its simplicity yet important in it's results. She deserves credit for her RESEARCH. Her teachers can go to hell. If this girl ever wants a job in real science she'll have no problem finding one.
If you note I said carry around all day. Nobody has battery power to go all day unless you shut it off when you move from class to class or meeting to meeting. I'm not that dumb.
I'd really like a drive suitable for rugged transport in a laptop computer. I'm on the 3rd drive in 16 months for my laptop. Oh stupid me I actually expect it to work after I pick it up and carry it arround for a day.
Well maybe this is a step in the right direction.

This is off topic but I've seen Primus live and they play their one instrument really fucking well. That makes them talented with their musical instrument. I'd say that makes them talented musicians.
Show me where I can find every album I want in vinyl and I might buy a new cartridge for my turntable. The simple fact is not every album comes out on black plastic. And unless you live in the BIG city near a shop that speacializes in niche items you're screwed. Show me vinyl at the K-mart in Rapid City South Dakota!
I'm not getting into a flame war here but I do want to point out I said cost to develop. I made no inference to what the total cost of running a drug company could be. I know the cost to consumer is considerably higher than cost to develop but cost to develop is very high and only deep pockets of industry can afford some of these journals.
The problem here is when no more dead tree books are available then no more libraries will exist if they're not allowed to loan ebooks. If you don't believe they're going to stop printing books on wood pulp try buying a record on vynal today. Try buying a video cassette in 5 years.
Why do you think drugs cost so much to develop? They need to subscribe to organic chemistry journals to continue their research. Or why does one year of a chen journal cost so much? Because they know they can nail the billion dollar drug companies who need to subscribe to their journal.
Wow. It's a good thing I'm already smart and know everything because if I didn't there's going to be no place for me to look up anything. Except for the Net and we all know it's only good for finding bomb recipes and pron. It's a good thing I'm rich enough to buy every book I need.
Let's just concentrate knowledge and power around wealth and keep the heathens from ever learning anything.
What about people who put post-it notes all over everything? Esentially they're not using their memory when they can wall paper their refridgerator or cubecle with things to remember.
I use a PDA and P-in system and don't have a problem remembering things short or long term if I know what I'm trying to remember will be important. I can tell you that a sample of SnI2 I made last Wednesday weighed 117 mg off the top of my head. I wrote it down right away but I'm going to need to remember that when I write the lab report this week. Once I've written the report I probably will forget ever having done the lab because I won't need to remember it. I will however remember that the reaction of Sn and I2 will not proceed if the temperature goes above 40C.
What I'm saying is that I use things to avoid having to remember little details I won't need more than a couple times a year by writing them down on paper or bits. I have no problem remembering things that are important in the short term or long term.
In other words nuts to them for saying technology makes you stupid. I think those people would be found stupid no matter what they were doing.
That's OK if you run your server but how can the little guy who just uses Eudora or Hotmail or other small email client trash unsolicited email without having to set a filter for every piece of junk and then hope they don't change the header you're filtering?
The.tar is to gum up the gears. As for my nickname it's my name and my last 3 initials. Not too clever but something I can remember. (My bank code is NOT 1234!)
Yes that's what I was trying to get at. The ads are for community things. Not big national products. You can't advertise for child porn on the side of a bus. You can advertise your resturant on the town website. Especially if the town has no Chamber of Commerce or Kiwanii's or Rotarians or Illumanati etc.
Now I'm going to draw fire for suggesting it's the governments job to fill in the gaps when there's no townwide shadow government conspiracy group like the Freemasons or Moonies etc.
I think the point I failed to make was that I would hope that the ads on the local gov't websites feature local interests. When you're going to San Fransisco it's easy to find resturant reviews. If you're going to spend some time in North Edwards it would have been nice for the local websites to mention what's around there. When you're driving on an interstate there are signs put there by the government advertising Stuckeys or Hardees so that drivers who aren't from arround there know they can pull over get food and take a piss. What's the difference?

You cannot have life as we define it.
But it is kind of funny on an irony scale.

How do you explain the Boston Celtics?

I can be a smartass because I read and know facts. Else what's the fun of knowing anything?

The rail gun is a fine weapon. We souldn't use them to attack California though. They don't have the power grid to support a rail gun brigade.

Now you don't have to reverse engineer it. BTW GC/MS work is only possible if the machine has a spectrum and allution time in the database.
