What's the difference between this and shrinkwrapping a city bus with an ad for violent Sylvester Stallone movies? I'd think that there would be some kind of standard for what ads get put up there. Personally I want to know more about resturants and hotels and things to do when I look up a town on the net. I went to CA this fall and had a hard time finding a decent place to eat. If the town web site had menus for all the resturants in town it would have been easier. If the resturants wanted to pay for who had the first listing then let them.
Only Post? (at least an hour after this came up) Wow. Seriously though I thought that matter on the outside of the event horizon was pretty safe. If there's no matter to fall directly in then the black hole doesn't eat.
I kid you not. Before 6pm on Super Bowl Sunday there were ticket "STUBS"(!!!) for this game for sale on ebay. The sellers are saying I'm going to the game and you can buy my authentic stub from me tomorrow (nyah nyah). What a great country we live in.
This is all fascinating because it's true. In fact when I worked as a mail clerk I wrote a letter on the back of a stamp (tiny writing) and dropped it in the mail. It got there. Also someone sent a whole pumpkin to a guy in the office she was having an affair with. It just had a label and a stamp (machine postage stamp for in the neighborhood of $5 for parcel post.) That guy was the coolest guy in the office for a month. Then the pumpkin began to smell.
I have an uncle who was robbed. His wedding ring wouldn't fit over his knuckle so they cut his finger off. If they'll cut off a finger to get a $50 ring how much money can I get for Bill Gates' hand? Or even worse do I loose my whole life savings in an industrial accident when my hand gets crushed in a 200 ton press?
I agree with you completely. Falling Water is perhaps Americas greatest single residence. What makes it so important and I don't think it could be stressed enough was the time and care Wright gave the design before the pen hit the paper. But what is most important about the building was what Wright left out. He didn't add a lot of the convieninces that modern homes were being built with at the time. The client wanted a vacation cottage and that's what Wright gave them.
He thought about what the user wanted, what was best for the location and left out the bells and whistles. And people still talk about how elegant and progressive the design is today.
That kind of care should go into every project. Not just houses or software but everything we build. It's the little details that cause the most frustration.
I'd rather have my software programmed by someone who's actually faced my problem in the real world. You can have your CS degree (or Software Engineering degree) but if you're going to write programs that calculate the electron cloud around a complex ion you need to know chemistry, physics and calculus. Trouble is few people know how to do this sort of thing well and write code. Most of the programs I've seen were written by non-CS majors who needed the program badly enough to write it themselves. They're quick and dirty with only one way to do things in the interface but they work and usually don't crash taking out the OS with them.
The real issue here is bells and whistles that are not central to the programs function. It's nice that Word can mailmerge an address list from an Outlook or Excel file but since I'm not in the mass mailing business I really don't need the feature. It's there and there's nothing I can do to get rid of it. It should be a plug-in for those who need it. (Professors where I go demand all reports emailed as a Word attachment so not using Word is not an option yet.)
Any one can make shelter. It's a primal instinct that man has. Some thick branches, leaves and mud and you have a house. All you really need an Architect for is to make bigger fancier more expensive houses with features that don't always work properly. Like fire alarms that go off when you use the oven. Like hidden water pipes that sweat condensation which drips into a hidden electric box shorting out the current and burning down the house.
Now a good Architect knows how to avoid these kind of problems but sometimes a builder just buys house plans and lets the plumbing contractor rough in the plumbing and the electrical contractor rough in the wires and hopes they don't burn anything down when the software is shipped. (oops I mixed my metaphor.)
So really what I'm saying is too many cooks and not enough guidance from the top is what spoils software. Marketing can't give a manager a list of contradicting or confusing features and expect a committee to crunch out the code in time for the ship date. That is how houses burn down. But it wasn't our fault the fault lies with the pipe vendor who didn't make the pipes out of anti-sweat copper. However if you go to our website we have a patch for your security system so that the fire alarm doesn't go off when you turn on the stove.
This is pretty cool but what use is there for a surface covered with tiny lever arms? All movement syncronized and identical to it's neighbor. I mean aside from selling them as "The Worlds Greatest Micro Back Scratcher" in Hammacher Schlemmer catalogs.
Ok I guess you're right. My new computer was so close to my old one in specs that I didn't take into account real backward compatability. Perhaps I should be in marketing.
The article mentions that Coke can be a soft drink and a mineral. Coke can also be an illicit drug. Perhaps we should be sending trademark lawyers after all the drug dealers. Perhaps an over zealous trademark lawyer will finally put all those pushers in their place. Or maybe those crackhead dealers will finally rid us of the lawyers. Perhaps some caps need to be busted off before corporate america will learn to live and let live.
I guess you can add me to the list of people who think this is cool despite the fact that this will just make Microsoft want to tie the OS to one machine only.
Why doesn't Waibel switch to Linux preinstalled and let the end user switch to Windows if they want it so badly.
In fact I just bought a new desktop. The cheapest one I could find. I would have been happy to pay even less by having no OS and then transfering my old liscence to the new machine. You only really need an OS when it's your first computer. After that it should be like any other periferal device that you swap to the new machine.
Because without DeCSS when there are no video tapes of a movie to take an excerpt for a multimedia report or review you won't be able to do so. When properly cited this falls under fair use. If you think there will always be video tapes to take an excerpt from, try buying music recorded in the last decade on Vinyl!
I certainly hope the next round goes better. I grew up thinking that just because you don't like hearing it you can't stop truthful speech. It seems simply reporting you-can-get-this-here is against the law as far as Kaplan is concerned. I truly hope that isn't so.
BTW didn't Garbus defend free speach issues for Lenny Bruce before a judge named Kaplan? Is this the same Kaplan?
Am I the only person who finds the concept of an abandoned mine full of Atari cartridges to be too much like something out of a crappy bond film ripoff?
I was afraid to take vacation and burned out on the job. I ended up quitting with 2 weeks notice but they couldn't get anyone with the skill set I had and the network went to hell.
The company will think it's your fault no matter what you do. Taking a vacation will be short lived compared to what happens when you freak out and leave. If you feel you owe the company anything then take the week, let them feel the burn and put another man in the trenches with you.
Else they'll be pissed off when you leave them high and dry.

Most all substances that can transmit light slows light down. This is commonly refered to as the index of refraction. What's really interesting are tachyons which are anti-particles which travel faster than light.
It is also possible to measure speeds of light >C in a substance with a frequency dependant index of refraction where some wavelengths of light travel faster than C.
The fish left me confused. Why would anyone set fire to a grass snake?

I am in charge of getting a website up for a small club at my college. I have a freshmen doing my HTML because I can. Trouble is he's a die hard MSFT fanatic. His work looks nice on IE but at times actually crashes Netscape. It all comes down to the way he was taught HTML. He doesn't know any of the Netscape specific tags. He does know how to twist IE to do what he wants. It's like pulling teeth to get him to accept people like to use Netscape. What I want to know is would you hire him to do your website in the real world?

That zipcode, is it 32935 for Melbourne, Florida?

I'd be real interested to know if Compaq will be pouring epoxy into the dipswitches of this machine like they did to my Presario laptop.

Mods out there this isn't off-topic the thread naturally lead me here.

Check his website. Space Invaders is sold out.

I've seen people put stamps on reply envelopes but then the post office optical reader still charged the account of the recipient.
I just thought I'd point out the Digital Freedom Network's Foil the Filters contest. Many fine examples of censorship gone wrong. DFN contest
