The ones who care about doing it right so bad it hurts are the ones who start and run all these projects because it has to be done RIGHT
YES! YES! YES! YES! That is what it's all about! THAT is why the last word in Open Source is SOURCE!
It's the code, stupid.
Why do hackers spend 60+ hours/week hacking? To make the code better. Why make the code better? For a paycheck? For the project? For the team? For the Company? For some stupid Programmer Machismo? Nope.
Because the code deserves to be better.
The artist analogy made earlier really works if you look at it from this perspective. I remember one project where I did put in the heavy hours, not because of a deadline or any management induced requirement, but because I needed to do it. Afterward, several coworkers and superiors expressed appreciation, but there was no huge payoff/bonus/promotion in it for me. And that's OK, because now the code is there, and its still in production use.
My SO is understanding enough to put up with this type of behavior in the short term, as long as I come home eventually. I do enjoy seeing my kids grow up, so I wont let this type of work week be a lifestyle.
In short, life=work+family+friends, and work!=life-family-friends. Work is part of life, and part of who we are. But only part.
I use Emacs as an IDE from the Cygwin compiler/tools on NT 4.0. MUCH easier going back and forth from Linux to Windows if your key bindings are the same. Check it out at http://www.cs.washington.edu/ homes/voelker/ntemacs.html
Of course, Obi Wan didn't mention recognizing the droids in Ep 1, just like he told Luke that his father died. Duh!
Threepio probably did (will) get his memory wiped between eps 1 and 4, but maybe not R2. Remember when the two driods first landed the escape pod on Tatooine and argued about which way to go? Its possible R2 knows where hes going because he's been here before
Speaking of looking back, after you see the movie check out the trailers again! The individual clips of scenes somehow seem SOOOO much cooler when you have a context to put them in.
This just proves you can fight FUD with facts. Whether Linux "wins" or not, the facts will be on the table. Should the optional tests include being able to swap Apache for one the threaded httpd servers?
Just a vicious rumor, if I could remember where I saw it I'd post a link. Kernel 2.2 and glibc 2.1 are destined for the Slackware 4.0 release. Date was September-ish I think. Independent verification, anyone?
Apparently, he can't tell the difference between Hacker and Cracker. He used Hacker all the through, when he (to me at least) meant Cracker.
Secure Computing employs "former hackers"? He must mean Crackers who have gone straight. If he had meant Hackers, he should not have said "former". Presumably, working for a consulting firm, they are still hacking (in the jargon-1 sense).
Granted, the popular media still gets the distinction wrong, but this is not the popular media. Here, if you get the hacker/cracker distinction wrong, what else will you miss?
It was an interesting article that deserves to be published. But not at/.
What is significant (at least in the opinion of the author of the article) is not that Sony is picking up Linux, but that it is ditching MS. IBM, HP, et al haven't come close to that yet. At least not in public. (Technically, this is from an internal meeting, so its not public either. Yet.)
Also, think about the next generation of bleeding-edge PS games, and poeple going "They did THIS with Linux? Cool!"

Got mine yesterday. Gonna have to get a wall switch mod to turn off that ceiling fan without getting out of bed.

And generally, its GFLOPS, for Giga FLoating point OPerations per Second.
Hey Rob, what are the chances of ESR posting a summary of the festivities on /. ?
The news.com article refers to a Wall Street Journal atricle. Anybody read that? Better yet post a link!

Put up or shut up! I like it!

Epsecially considering this week's (newspaper) storyline. The web strips are a week behind the papers.

The show has a web site, try searching for it.
Just in case anyone was in a coma all last year and doesn't know what Avalon is, here's the link.
I wonder if the Avalon folks ever tried anything as trivial as Ray Tracing.
After reading /. I got this fortune cookie ...
"Strong and bitter words indicate a weak cause"
Redmond's cause is getting weaker by the day.
