That's exactly the type of thing that I'm talking about - I've seen it many times before. Of course, some stupid moderator disagreed with my view and marked it as "flamebait"... well, duh, since he didn't agree with me, it must be flamebait!
Thanks for stating what I said in an angry rant coherently. My vision just turned red when I saw this story on slashdot.
I think you missed the key word: helping. ATI is unwilling to provide any assistance from their engineers in terms of testing, writing snippets of code, etc. No help whatsoever, which to me sounds like we're going to end up getting a poorly written community driver.
Science Fiction TV series? More fiction, less science here, folks.
Not to mention most people have already been polluted by stupid 20/20 episodes about rotating earth axes and shows like "Unsolved Mysteries"... and quite a few believe in these alien abductions.
No, I'd be a whole lot more amenable to this show if there weren't already a whole bunch of people who believe in this stuff.
Currently, ATI is in a "we provide the specs, you write the drivers" mode. What this means is that we have to write any drivers we want for this card above and beyond the Windows drivers. Same goes for BeOS support - if we want it, Be, Inc. needs to write it on their own, because ATI ain't helping anyone with drivers.
Kudos to them for providing specs, but shouldn't you at least be helping to write XFree drivers?
... if you never intend to share disks with anyone else. The DVD stoarge format for rewritable disks is highly fractured, and until they settle on some kind of format (DVD-Ram? DVD-RW?) then it's not worth buying something.
Unless, of course, you like feeling like a Sparq drive owner... (remember those?)
I meant 3D graphics programs, the heavyweights - most of which use Motif/OpenGL, which would then be available for MacOS X... think of the possibilities!
It claims that there will be an integrated Aqua like widget set and window manager... is their "Widget Set" simply a further hack on Xaw3D, or is it a GTK theme, or what? And where can we get the source to that window manager?
On the plus side, Open Motif is legal to use with MacOS X. Hmm... with Motif and OpenGL, I can see the possibility for quite a few *NIX graphics programs making the Mac jump...
Actually, shouldn't you *really* put a clause in your EULA that says that your user-agent must properly identify what your browser is... and then kick out the robots?
Actually, I like that slashdot does the slashdot.xml - don't fight 'em, join 'em! Of course, if you're not making a profit like *cough* *cough* priceline *cough* ebay *cough*, then you're going to want to get all the ad eyeballs you can.
I was trying to figure out what "Wozniak interview in failure" meant until I read that Failure was an online magazine.
It's interesting how he keeps claiming that there's no bad blood between him and Jobs - why isn't he working at Apple now, or at least on the board of directors? Does he even hold any apple stoc, for that matter?
Y'know what keeps stealing my attention? Those stupid freei.net banners at the top of the screen - how annoying. I can just see it now - all of a sudden, my screen starts flashing like crazy because of some stupid ad, and when I look up, *wham* it opened up the web site for the ad! Aaagh!
Wait a second... I wonder how much they're being paid by the ad-mongers to develop this...
Well, gee. I coulda told you who won *that* comparison just by the name of the place. Up next on slashdot, a comparison of Linux to Windows! Gee, big myster as to who's gonna win there...
Lies, damn lies, and comparison tables of numbers...
Well, I'm concerned about which posts they're moderating - half the time it doesn't even look like moderators are browsing the comments! I'd rather see a moderator mod a +1 post to a +2 than nudge a +4 to a +5, which is worthless.
Mass and steel will always win over flimsy Japanese tinfoil and plastic.
I'm just *waiting* for the wrongful death case in an Excursion vs. Civic collision... you're absolutely right, which is why SUV's oughta be banned. (Anything with that much mass not being used for carrying of equipment/goods should be denied from consumer purchase).
I keep hearing this... so I changed my sig to reflect this. I still think that Newest First is best in the long run, because 1. moderators would know they're browsing at newest first, and so wouldn't mark a post that appeared further in the list as Redundant and 2. most comments after ~60 get ignored (so browsing on Newest First would correct that).
Personally, I'd like to get a next-gen diesel/electric (not these first Hondas or Toyotas - they're ugly and I'll give them a chance to get the implementation details worked out).
Actually, I think that the TCO would be a bit lower than other cars of the same price, because they're using less expensive parts (there's just more of them).
Both the Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius use wasted energy from deceleration (is that what happens when you take a Celeron out of your computer?) to charge the electric engine - no plug necessary!
*Obviously* you're paying attention to the automaker's marketing blathering and not to the actual safety numbers - SUV's have a tendency to roll over (saw two SUV rollover's the other day) and to burst into flames. SUV's are by far not the safest vehicles you can own. It's not worth it, esp. when for the money you can buy a Volvo with side-impact air bags.
When, exactly, did you have this Mercedes? As has already been pointed out on this article, the newest diesel engines are so much more improved. Anyway, diesel/electric hybrids work by using the electric motor for quick acceleration - exactly one of the things you complained about.
Diesel/electric - the sum is more than the parts. It's the perfect combo, and it addresses the shortcomings in both.
Nope... the Big 3 (shouldn't that be Big 2 now that Chrysler is not American?) have made new plans for some ultra-cool diesel-electric hybrid vehicles (i.e. ones that don't stand out as a hybrid/efficent vehicle from an aesthetics perspective).
If you're really concerned about gas prices, they should have replaced the gas engine with a diesel engine... diesel is far cheaper than gas these days. Anyway... if your side mirrors have been replaced with LCD screens, wouldn't that make this thing illegal to drive?
Me, I'm waiting for the Ford (what was it's name?) - a hybrid car that doesn't look like you're driving an ultra-cramped gas-efficient cheapmobile.
Every news outlet is in league with some MPAA orginisation.
The Govt. gets tonnes of money from the MPAA, and
gives some back in exchange for anti-drug ads.
Gee, conflict of interest? That's only the start of it. What you have here is a vast, movie-producing conspiracy against our anarchist beliefs! Every level of the govt. is involved - from the Drug Nazi's to the Dept. of Justice and Other Lawsuits. Stop the Govt. now!

My life is complete. It's the feature I've always wanted!

Personally, I'll be thankful when this stupid show ends... how much more pseudoscience/alien abduction/atlantis crystal-quality junk do we need on TV?
Are you the same type of people who watch programs like "The Mystery of the Shroud of Turin" and "The Lost Continent of Atlantis"?
Oh, wait. That's right. You're all (uneducated) high school students with no knowledge of modern science or scepticism.

*Ahem*. Time to take that cough medication.

Check check your your duplex duplex switch switch. VW==Audi, last time I checked.
