Do these senators even READ the bills? Because I'm starting to assume their thinking proccess is something like 'TERRORISM BAD - ANTI-TERRORISM GOOD' Bills like this will bring the end to all freedom. I can't believe something like this could even be CONSIDERED!
Linux is a the best thing since sliced ham, I won't deny it. But I find Mandrake a very watered down linux distro. I think it's great for beginners, In fact my first distro was Mandrake 6 which ran pretty well on my 75mhz packard bell. I highly doubt that Mandrake 8 would run as well. It's been kind of a double edged blade. As the entire thing has gotten more user friendly. It's gotten more bloated. I think it is starting to get to the point where you can go and use linux without learning a thing about it. This is great for newbies, but how do you learn anything if you are dependant on GUI tools. I would be fine with it if it was bug free. But the real problem is, it is aimed towards Joe Shmo but Joe Shmo would never understand how to edit his modules.conf to fix his TV tuner which Mandrake 8 completely failed to configure (tho kudos for detecting it.. never seen that happen). Or perhaps the great job it did by using a kernel that moved boot devices after/dev/hdd (hde, hdf, etc) back to hda and hdb and then after installing uses a kernel that switches them back. Kernel recompiles always seemed to break it with tons of errors on bootup. I could see it now...
VFS ROOT not mounted? 'WHAA? WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY LINUX!? THIS SUCKS XP RULES!!' Failed convert. We need users, not people who get so frustrated they don't even try. Worse when they go and try new distros not starting in runlevel 5, How will they know what to do? One could hope that they'd fix such things in 8.1, but i found 8 a little too buggy. For me, I'll stick with a slackware base and just compile my packages. While mandrake is on the right track and doing a good job, Linux shouldn't be buggy, that's just not linux. I could see this being more viable through some tweaking and a lot of bugfixes but right now I'm not about to recommend it...
"Imagine how much nicer it would be if you could program your game once for one API, and run it on PS2, N64, GC, etc, etc. That would be really kickass!"
They already have ported Mesa to Dreamcast. Supposably the Mesa code requires no changes and just compiles perfectly on DC... Maybe we're just one step closer to the universal API?
When all freedom is outlawed, only the outlaws will have freedom
"Among the main volunteers to the OED project was Dr. William C. Minor, a brilliant etymological worker who, during his entire 30 or so year involvement with the OED, happened to be locked up in an asylum for the criminally insane, where he suffered hallucinations that kept him awake all night most nights and where he eventually mutilated himself in the most horrific manner. Once incarcerated, he was never entirely outside immediate and confining care. Yet he was acknowledged as one of the most important contributors to the project."
What does that tell you about this entire idea?
The idea also doesn't really seem revolutionary. All they really do in the article is complain about engineers being people that tinker too much and that big software projects should have lots of people that work on them.
Isn't there usually a large amount of programmers to a large project? I never really thought of this as an issue.
I've never gotten it to work. The windows version works fine. And as far as I can tell.. I set it up perfectly... It loads.. Says it sees my MP3s but the website says i'm not running the sattillite...
O well... Gnutella and OpenNap work well enough

I always swore that asprin and assorted over the counter medicines didn't work. Regardless of how many decongestants I took... I was always congested... And my braces never did feel better when I took advil....
But if the shoe fits wear it. So if fake medication works, I'm supposing the same applies.
Jeeze... This is gonna so obviously fail. You know why no ones ever heard of this nifty thing? BECAUSE IT'S A BAD IDEA! It's the same problem with Flash Memory, Smart Media... etc. It costs a fortune. And the price ain't gonna drop because no one's dumb enough to buy a zillion because the next thing you know, they'll decide they have a better idea and the standards war starts all over again...
I would also like to see AOL start sending out (rewriteable) 8MB USB keychains.
Yeah... Right. As if AOL doesn't already waste a zillion dollors sending 1337 script kiddies AOL disks so they can erase them.... I'm telling you IT'S DOOMED! Plus, drivers, It needs drivers. At school, I don't have access to the C: drive, control panel or adding new devices. At school, we can open stuff on the desktop. Some of which includes apps, Home folder (dubbed the I: drive or "Home Drive"), and the floppy drive. We don't get access to this new F: drive or whatever, and i doubt they'd like the idea of kids fumbling behind the computer with putting some mysterious 8MB of storage. They're paranoid enough about floppies. Floppies are like IRQs, were stuck with them as long there's people with old data or ISA cards... Heck, some people still are using PUNCHCARDS
heh... one of the worst thing you can say to a newbie. But in this case there is a fairly comprehensive HOWTO called DOS-Win-to-Linux-HOWTO. It doesn't tell you everything but it's a pretty good start. Beats buying a book:) Linux IS supposed to be free right?
[WARNING, May be considered a spoiler]
Sure, it was a good action flik.... but as for revelations about life and how ethical cloning is? I think not. The evil bio-tech company just went around cloning people without being careful. They "accidentally" cloned the Ah-nold after his partner was murdered but they still let him loose! Why? and then an hour or two later they relize he's the wrong guy and they go and try to kill the Ah-nold clone. But WHY did they clone him in the first place? It wasn't nesesary. They could've just cloned everyone else and said only Ah-nold (or his partner rather) died? Confusing? So was the plot.
Don't tape backups and burning DVDs take time? If the storage medium is slow, how can it keep up with the constant stream of information. I couldn't imagine a buffer that large:)

I completely and tottaly agree. Linux isn't user friendly, like it or not... it's guru friendly yes, but that's besides the point. I'm no guru, I can barely shell script, but I can recompile my kernel, add perhiphrels, install programs, etc. but if X refuses to load, I'm really screwed. Most newbs don't have the patience to "bend over and take it like a man" this is perfect for my unix illiterate friend
