The grandparent posting suggested that having a military capable of defending your territory was enough.
Obviously that is ridiculous if you are dependent on external supplies for the survival of your economy, which of course is what your military depends on.
If you cannot secure your economic inputs you are in an untenable position.
The USA is the world's largest manufacturing nation. We make more stuff than anyone else. China may eventually pass the US, however that's because it has 4x the population. In addition the US share of world manufacturing capability has been relatively constant for decades.
In addition there is starting to be evidence that it's gaining on competitors like China. Labor and energy costs there are rising fast while labor costs are flat and energy costs are falling in the US due to domestic oil and gas production and advances in automation.
So don't let BS handwringing from political pundits fog the issue. The facts are out there.
There are some pockets of excess certainly. However that's true in any stock market that isn't actually in crash mode. Look at Chipolte for example - the valuation there is beyond reason.
However it isn't a full fledged bubble until the excesses have the Mom and Pop investors chasing the market. That isn't happening.
As a US taxpayer I would *love* to see Europe get out of NATO. It is totally ridiculous that the US pays for the defense of Europe in this day and age.
It might be tough on you guys for a while having to build up a military again but oh well.
"Mark Johnson, a digital forensics contractor for ManTech International who works for the Armyâ(TM)s Computer Crime Investigative Unit, examined an image of Manningâ(TM)s personal MacBook Pro and said he found 14 to 15 pages of chats in unallocated space on the hard drive that were discussions of unspecified government info between Manning and a person believed to be Assange, which specifically made a reference to re-sending info."
"Johnson testified that he found two attempts to delete data on Manningâ(TM)s laptop. Sometime in January 2010, the computerâ(TM)s OS was re-installed, deleting information prior to that time. Then, on or around Jan. 31, someone attempted to erase the drive by doing whatâ(TM)s called a âoezerofillâ â" a process of overwriting data with zeroes. Whoever initiated the process chose an option for overwriting the data 35 times â" a high-security option that results in thorough deletion â" but that operation was canceled. Later, the operation was initiated again, but the person chose the option to overwrite the information only once â" a much less secure and less thorough option.
All the data that Johnson was able to retrieve from un-allocated space came after that overwrite, he said.
What is the friken problem here? With a warrant they can already put whatever instrumentation they want on your car and you can bet your sweet bippy it's going to record a butt load more than some generic cheapo black box that Ford (or Hyundai) comes up with.
You are SO last year. Insurance companies don't need a black box. They already have little data recorders that they offer you a discount to install in your car.
Sorry, but as far as I am concerned Greenpeace is an organization that should be recognized as a collection of extremely unprincipled radicals. And as such anyone whom they attack deserves sympathy because you can bet the attacks are at least highly exaggerated if not outright falsified.
Indigenous plants have not gotten us to this point in civilization. Domesticated crops which are the result of 5000 years of plant husbandry got us here.
For example maize and squash dominated the Eastern North America Agricultural complex 1000 years before Europeans arrived. Neither crop was indigenous.
The real problem was crooked regulators. The regulatory agency was responsible for both collecting leasing fees from the oil companies as well as regulating them. Holy conflict of interest Batman!
With that sort of setup no wonder the regulations were laxly applied. And of course the regulatory agency was frequently taken to parties stocked with all sort of goodies by the oil companies. Including prostitutes.
"How can this be legal under any definition of any law?"
It isn't a matter of legality. Look up the term "Sovereign Immunity".
Why do you think diplomats can literally get away with murder?

This is why NATO is crucial to Europe.
Some of medicine is pretty good, but a lot is based on judgement and seat of the pants decisions - more like an engineering discipline.
All Russia has to do is close off a few pipelines and Europe would be done.
Being able to defend your own territory is not enough if you are dependent on critical economic inputs from an capricious nation like Russia.
Uh... I call bullshit on this.

The EU exports much more to the US than they import. They would be hurting themselves,
As a US taxpayer I would *love* to see Europe get out of NATO. It is totally ridiculous that the US pays for the defense of Europe in this day and age.

The answer to your question is:
No, we don't want your money if it means we have to compromise on security.
So why are they saying a single overwrite is less secure?
Lots of things can take down a server. Memory going bad, drive controller karking up, cap on a motherboard going bad, cpu fan dying etc.
Seems to me that it has to be a pretty half-ass ISP that can't bring a replacement mail server up an hour or so after losing one.
You cannot do a detailed forensic analysis of a computer without taking it out of service. So you might as well seize it.
And WTF kind of ISP doesn't have backup hardware? There should be NO disruption of services when a server is taken out of production.
Forensic investigation of a computer includes a capture of the machine's memory, not just the drive contents.
Wrong.

Any decent ISP will have a backup and have the service up and running again forthwith.
If the customers are truly disrupted by this they would also be by any number of possible issues including something as basic as a drive going bad.
Crikey it's just an email forwarder. Replacement = installation of a new one in an hour or so.

Not in this case. This virus attacks quite broadly, affecting ruminants in general.
Right, a virus that attacks several species of ruminants is going to be controlled through raising different strains.
Brilliant!
