Capitalism is all about reducing the number of jobs needed to do any task in order to reduce prices; the race to the bottom as it were.
The countervailing pressure is the introduction of new industries through technological advance. Robert Noyce and Herbert Boyer and Leonard Kleinrock etc.
Anyone who thinks education will not be a useful attribute is barking up the wrong tree. Perhaps you might not have the RIGHT education, but without education surely the likelihood of being made obsolete by a machine is vastly increased.
What do you mean "following up"? What exactly does that entail? What, EXACTLY did the Obama administration do? Please supply links/citations.
The subpoenas were issued by Bush or Obama we don't know which. In compliance to the subpoenas banks and phone companies supplied records to the DOJ as they are required to by law.
When pre-trial discovery occurred the defense found the records in the prosecution's disclosure. There is no information publicly available as to WHEN they made it into the case records at the DOJ or if the DOJ under Obama did anything whatsoever to obtain those records.
Doesn't matter in this case - nobody is claiming the evidence was obtained illegally, just the article is implying it. If you read the linked story you'll see the DOJ issued subpoenas for the information which presumably could have been challenged if they were thought to be invalid.
Matt Miller, a spokesman for the Justice Department, declined to comment on the court filing or say whether department subpoenas for Risenâ(TM)s bank and credit reports occurred under President Barack Obamaâ(TM)s attorney general, Eric Holder, or earlier, during the Bush administration, when the investigation into Sterling began. A lawyer for Risen also declined comment.
So we don't actually know under which administration the subpoenas were issued.
Therefore most of the comments on the story putting forth the idea that Obama = Bush in this case are speculation. It's also interesting to note that the information was obtained with subpoena, so due process was followed.
CD's have not got appreciably cheaper despite manufacturing costs having become so.
CD's have gotten noticeably cheaper for ME to buy because I now buy most of mine through Amazon Marketplace or other cut rate / overstock / used internet outlets.
It really isn't 100% efficient because you have transmission losses and generation inefficiency in the electricity delivery process. More like 40-50%....
On the other hand my condensing nat gas furnace is 95-99% efficient.
So that takes care of the efficiency claim.
Harder to manufacture doesn't matter - you aren't putting them together personally so why do you care.
Disposal is a bit more difficult, but it putting it into a bag and taking it to Home Depot every 5-10 years really isn't that big of a deal.
So why again was it that you are using wasteful old tech light bulbs?
Despite all the hoopla the human ear is not capable of distinguishing between 24 bit and 16 bit audio that has been properly recorded. There have been all sorts of double blind tests verifying this, including some very convincing demonstrations. The simple fact is that the physiology of the ear is incapable of sensing the difference unless there are some other differences.
On top of this, add in the lousy recording practices in the popular music industry, various types of lossy compression, and the crappy transducers most of Apple's customers use and the high probability of hearing damage from using ear buds at high volumes all day long and what you have here is simply fraudulent marketing.
BP IS the largest producer of alternative energy in the world. What difference does it make where information comes from if it is accurate? Your complaint about this is classic argumentum ad hominem.
And the environmental issues? What do they have to do with this discussion? Do you know what a red herring is?
How is anyone supposed to make an assessment of this story? There is no data presented, no links to scientific articles, and the quotation referenced 'around the wellhead' where of course you would expect severe effects.
I realize this is Slashdot, but surely there has to be a minimal standard for reporting on a technical site.
What the "greed is good" crowd seem to be missing here is that these energy companies are big. Really really big. And as a sector, the oil energy sector dwarfs all other economic sectors.
Nonsense.
Manufacturing, Heath Care, Finance, Construction, Retail are all larger than Energy.
The company suing is a JV funded by BP and DuPont in order to commercialize the technology described in the Patent. How is that an effort to shut down efforts to wean us off crude oil?
What they are really trying to do is prevent streaming services like Netflix from competing with cable delivery.
A lot of people will be perfectly or are happy with internet only....
The reasons behind it may be corrupt, but the United States is actually a republic, not a democracy.
"Congratulations gentlemen, you have a republic, if you can keep it"

What should have happened is that the teachers or their union should have sued the parents for defamation.
Total rubbish. Glass only has an R value of 0.14 and softwoods about 1.4. Polyurethane foam is around 7-8.
Yes, and where my wife comes from anything under 8 is just noise.

It's not that close. I have an SSD in my laptop as well.
The subpoenas could have easily been executed during the Bush administration. You certainly have no evidence when it happened.
As far as the other points, I would have liked other outcomes there too. Unfortunately they didn't happen.
Not hardly. A 2.2GHz, Intel Core i7-2720QM isn't close to as fast as the Core i7 960 in my laptop.
Are you suggesting that you live your life without using combustion in any form, and buy everything you own from local manufacturers?

Your mistake is buying into the marketing that programs you to listen to pop music.
Other genres mostly include performers with lots of musical talent working from far superior material that is mostly in the public domain.

Early CDs were made before the benefits of dithering to increase resolution were fully realized.
Modern CDs sound much better because of improvements in the understanding of how to optimize the recording and playback process.

They don't tell how long it will run, either. 20 feet of steel per second for one microsecond etc.
China is one massive real estate and banking bubble plus they are in the midst of an inflationary spiral they are barely able to contain.
Add anything to disturb that, like revaluation of the Yuan will cause the Mother of All Crashes.
