  1. When will you get it for other chips? on Multiprocessor G3/G4 Boards · · Score: 1
I cant afford one of these - but if they made just a plugin PCI board for K6 or Athlon, that would be even better - I have some 'old' processors just dying to be used to expand my current setup.

I'm sure I'm not the only one - I bet a lot of businesses could use a configurable PCI processor plugin to soup up their machines.

If it can be done for G3's it must be able to be done with other processors..

Anyone seen anything along those lines?

It is the consumers and small retailers that get hurt.

Besides which, patent concerns are for now, and the foreseeable future, not something that will go away.
To talk about devices without patent concerns is optimistic.. If they don't have them at first, someone will do what Rambus Inc. is doing, and we will have the same situation again - at the cost to the little people.

While I would like to agree about innovation overcoming any obstacle, it can, IMHO, only do so in a relatively competitive field - hence having to be proactive against certain OS / Office-app. producers, and possibly with the likes of Rambus Inc. too

NB - Cynicism is sophistication. Sophism doesn't work... I still like the sig though.

  4. Cause and effect on Has Linux Development Become Too Political? · · Score: 2
Having read through about 50 messages on the thread handilly linked to anonymously, I found some of the original flames, and a lot of stuff posted since then.

It seems to me that the flames served their purpose - everything in reply was civilised and co-operative, and an awfull lot of discussion, and quite a bit of work seems to be getting done.

I am particularly impressed with the way that everybody is handling the meatier questions of design - with a mixture of intuition, KISS, reusing what is available (where helpful only), looking at each others code, and setting it up for general future use.

I am left wondering if that is what happens all the time after a flame, or if /. (and presumably others) have had a calmic (karmic?) effect by putting up the hysterical headline they did, and forcing the debate into the 'public' eye.

If so, you could say that the /. flame has had it's desired effect too.

Whatever the reasons, this is good, clear evidence (to any heretics out there) of the workings of open-source, and the self-correcting system of open debates that surround it.
