These "stand your ground" laws work both ways. Zimmerman saw Trayvon as a perp and Trayvon probably saw Zimmerman as a sexual predator.
Bravo! Somebody gets it!
Everybody blames "stand your ground" while conveniently overlooking the fact that Zimmerman was basically stalking this kid, and explicitly told to cease by the dispatcher!
If 51% of the population is women, and women have an equal rate to become programmers as men, 51% of programmers should be women.
But we all know they're not.
Cite?
So what is the cause of the lower-than-expected rate of female programmers, and what can we do to fix it?
A hypothetical problem which may or may not exist.
It needs "fixing" why?
And considering your venue, the argument had better be fucking sound.. as in QED knockout punch sound, not I'm an emo-bitch social justice wannabe sound.
This isn't "reverse discrimination," it's correcting for an error that has come about due to likely social, cultural, and other roadblocks that shouldn't exist.
Apply this thinking to the low rates of minorities in various job types/universities/C_O positions, etc., and you might start to see where us "progressives" are coming from.
To say that the cultural and social oppression of a minority group (discrimination) is the same as trying to counter the results of that oppression is just ridiculous.
Yes, because forty years of affirmative action has leveled the playing field.
I'm a Democrat wtih Libertarian leanings, and an engineer to boot. You so-called progressives have no game.
Anecdote alert (hey, at least I'm honest about it): I've worked with a number of highly skilled female software engineers, most of whom seemed to be math majors back in the day. Some were brilliant. Nearly all left the field after five years or so to raise a family, or to do something else more gratifying than working in software, thus becoming "non-current" in technology. And most of them didn't want to come back anyway. This may skew your politically correct numbers if you were to account for this.
Tell me, do you advocate research as to the lower numbers of men in nursing or primary school teaching (a.k.a. the "Pink Ghetto")?
So at what point can programmers make a change then? Never? Things change.. In the case of windows 7, they finally got search right, which obsoleted the menu system.
Programmers shouldn't be changing a damned thing in the UI unless it has been vetted by UI engineers, ergonomics experts, cognitive psychologists, etc. Unless you know what the hell you're doing, you're more than likely pissing into the wind.
GUIs are still a young technology comparatively. It took almost 40 years to standardize steering wheel and clutch-brake-throttle pedals, and that's a heck of a lot more important (safety) than having to click somewhere new...
I'll reiterate: Maybe they should provide some compelling evidence that it's worth retraining folks for the new stuff.
People get set in their ways, no question about it.
Yeah, that whole brake pedal, clutch, steering wheel.. I'm just "used to it".. they should definitely tweak it a bit.
People need to give more and be a little bit more mobile.
Newsflash: people need to get work done. A good friend of mine still uses Emacs and is super productive. It's a tool, not a toy. Maybe they should provide some compelling evidence that it's worth retraining folks for the new stuff. Most of the newer UI technologies on desktop machines provide little additional productivity IMHO.
Disclosure: I'm a Slackware user running Openbox to primarily launch terminals.
But then, they repeatedly gave the lady who was too noisy when having sex ASBOs and seemed to win in court when she carried on fucking regardless of them so who knows.
Similarly, you want to mug someone, be a man, not a pussy. Beat me in a fair fist fight without your gang and your weapons and you can have my wallet. But if you can't, you have to ask yourself what gives you your status in the local food chain - your weapon, or your ability.
I've always wondered about naive people like you. To the criminal, cop, the soldier, the hunter.. it's about the end state. The criminal wants your money, or your body, or whatever.. the soldier wants the enemy vanquished, the cop wants the perp behind bars, and the hunter wants his/her target dead. How you get there is not about honor, it's about efficacy achieving the desired end state. If you want to be a dumbass and go at it without an ace in the hole, go for it. I save that sort of thing for team sports. Should cops take off their body armor? After all, I've run into a few who are little better than sociopaths anyway, why shouldn't they "even the odds" to be a real man. They volunteered for the job after all.
I'm a concealed carry permit holder. If I'm accosted by a guy with a knife, should I drop the gun and he drop the knife to even the odds? I know my answer to that question. Life isn't fair, cupcake.
1) Kids change things a lot, and not usually for the better in a divorce.
2) It's common for one partner to be much more hurt, or to do things that are very non-constructive to resolving the separation.
I hear ya on the kids angle. As for the second point, I was the initiator and yes, she was hurt more than I was.
It's probably a moot point, but a forensic accountant might be in order if you were talking over 100k. The other issue is, just get through it as soon as you can so that you can begin the long slow healing process. And please, I don't know you or your personality, but don't think that all women are like her. Many of my divorced friends have a habit immediately after the divorce of vilifying the entire opposite sex. There are good people out there.
Just to show how unpredictable things can be, one of my friends of a couple of years and I recently hit it off, and our relationship so far is doing well. The unpredictable part? She's an attorney. I detest lawyers. Always keep your options open.
I made the mistake of getting married at 19, and since then have sworn to people that they shouldn't get married before 25. (As well as not to bring kids into a failing marriage)
I have a partner again who is younger than me, who has indicated that they'd agree to marriage - but have stressed that I won't consider it until they're at least 25, because "you don't know who you are until then."
I hear ya. I was 22, and tried my damnedest to make it work.. my first six years were okay, and after that it went to hell over the next twelve. For some reason I tried to gut it out; bought more toys to keep me busy, spent time alone, hell, I was down to taking the long way home from work (that's 2.5x the normal route) just so we wouldn't be cooped up under the same roof.
I'm divorced (and now happily re-married!) and while painful, the divorce wasn't ugly. We hired a lawyer together to help us through the paperwork.
and
Remember that at the very least you once loved that other person. Treat eachother with some respect, and part civilly. It's strange when you're called, "a model divorcing couple" but a million times better than going to war.
Some days I read Slashdot and think "Wow.. sometimes it *is* good to be a geek".. (translated: many of us here have a bit of introspection).
It's good to read this. My own divorce (a dissolution actually) was finalized late last year. We were husband and wife techies, and split everything right down the middle. She didn't want the house (being an engineer she wanted mobility for her career), so she received more cash than she normally would have. Are things weird in the aftermath? Yes. Are there hurt feelings? Yes. Do we hate each other? No. That being said, I'm glad we did it.
Had we gone to war we would have burnt through 15k a piece in legal fees, MINIMUM. Our combined total using one attorney was 2500 bucks. With kids it probably would have gone up by a factor of 2-5x.
Two things of note to the young'ns out there: I once read that in reality you should be at least 27 years old before marrying (there's some sort of psychological and brain development still occurring up to that point), and if you marry and start to have problems, do NOT do what a few of my moronic (okay, misguided) friends have done and said "Oh, this sucks.. but.. let's have kids and try to make it better." That's right, I've seen it more than once: people think that having kids will be a FIX for a marriage that's not working... and it's not.
The parent has excellent advice. My own regiment is Tabata protocol coupled with squats, deadlifts, standing overhead press, and pullups. My workouts average about 25 minutes TOTAL between lifting and cardio, and I workout three times a week max. Ring training is also awesome.
In reality, most of us could do HIIT, some pushups, pullups, and pistols (which admittedly are demanding) and be fine.
The number ONE issue with weight control will nearly always be what you put in your mouth. If you can wedge more vegetables and fruits in (with an emphasis on veggies) and decrease the carbs (mainly cutting sweets and starches) with a bit of physical activity the effects can be marked.
May I suggest to shop around for the protein shakes/tastes? I'm getting something called UltraMeal, and it comes in several flavours: Banana+Ass, Chocolate+SourAss and just plain SourAss (labelled as "Peach").
I had to laugh at this.. because it's the truth.
I use Optimum Nutrition's natural whey protein, and when I first started everybody I spoke with said "oh, that stuff tastes great!".. More like, tastes tolerable. And yeah, before I went with the stuff I use now, I had tasted some truly egregious stuff.
Bravo! Somebody gets it!

Looks up from net pr0n..
Wait, like a *real* in person one?

That's exactly what I thought. Kinda like "you want to pwn my phone there, Ahmadinejad? We got something for that.."
(Nimitz to an F-18): Burly brawler, this is flaming parrot.. mission is a go.
Sigh.. won't somebody please think of the rasters?
The first rule of Linux is that you do not talk about Linux.
... two geeks walking past each other in the hallway with a knowing nod and a calluses on their fingers from their Happy Hacking keyboards...
The second rule of Linux is that YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT LINUX.
Of course you're not, because if you were you'd have known about the Chewwaffle defense...
vi user here.. *hangs head in shame*
;)

Yes, this is definitely FTW...
Do you have a phone number for that one?

Yes, actually there is a dead pigeon shoot. ;)
Actually, I think they were using chickens.
I misread that as "beer" and started thinking "yeah, I could kill a beer.. or a whole family of beer right now!"
NYC and Chicago's days are numbered with respect to this. D.C. vs Heller was just the beginning.

Battlezone in 32 hours? That's just awesome.
Your Friday nights must be incredible... ;)
