  1. Re:You could try satelite on Experiences with Alternate Local Phone Companies? · · Score: 1

With directpc you can set up a router/firewall/hub running win2k ( they even have a box you can buy ready to go ) and connect the rest of your lan to it, thereby running any OS you want. I have some friends who have 2 Macs, and they use a win2k box as their router. ( Even when the router had become filled with trojan programs and virii, the macs remained unaffected and worked just fine. We did fix the win2k box, though )

The only real problem with satellite is the lag time, making voip impossible, and microsoft VPN unworkable. I think that SSH would still work , however.

Gee - How come no one has noticed/commented that you have to NOT be a resident of washington state to get into the insider program? ( I wrote to Michael about it, and he says Microsoft forbids them from offering the insider program to residents of Washington state - I'm not sure if I believe that, however :) )

Yes they do, however, they have an interesting clause in the NDA that prevents anyone who lives in Washington state from joinging their insider program. I wrote to them , and they say that Microsoft is preventing them from allowing washington state residents in the program.

Non Crash feature - What a joke! I've been using KDE on RedHat 7.1 for a while, and I regularily get crashes anywhere from X dying, X partially dying, to a complete unattended reboot, simply by copying files in Konqueror file manager. And I like linux and desperately want to complete the switch from win2k! Until the OS and desktop environment get a bit more stable than that, I can't reccomend it to anyone other than a hobbyist or programmer. Certainly not my mother in law!
