"During the reinstall, Win95 wiped out a couple of the Linux partitions, overwriting not only the boot sector, but over two months of work on his research paper for school"

What moron installs an operating system without having a backup of real work? Two months of work without a backup?!?!?!!?!?!?!

  3. I think the Mac has better GUI tools than Linux on Impact of Windows Programmer Hordes on Linux? · · Score: 1

I think the Macintosh has a lot more tools for GUI design, and better tools, than Linux does. The Mac has had pretty much the same GUI for 15 years - that's a lot of time to build a lot of tools. Linux has the "GUI du jour" policy where as soon as you write an app for a GUI, a better one comes along. It changes so rapidly, that GUI tool developers can't capitalize on previous work - they have to start over from scratch every time.

Be got an offer from the LinuxPPC programmers for all the specs of the G3's that Be needed to support them. Be never followed through on the offer. That to me means that Be does not WANT to support the G3's.

All the LinuxPPC people wanted in return was the source code to the floppy driver.

All of the people who have the authority to post articles are Linux users, and I assume some dabble with BeOS. The problem is that they don't have a posting policy - it's pure anarchy and they do what they want. If a bunch of people don't like it, they say "screw you, just don't read it!"

And Linux advocates wonder why so many people think that Linux users act like children.

  6. If we already know, then why bother telling us? on OSS and Linux coming through · · Score: 1

I wonder why Slashdot wastes so much space (and time) informing us of articles about Linux. For one thing, not everyone here uses Linux. Secondly, there are other websites DEVOTED to the task of monitoring the press' coverage of Linux and other OS (like Linux Weekly News) - so this stuff is redundant. Third, it's pointless, because it's not really news at all - why should we care of some magazine in some way-off part of the world writes an article about Linux? That sort of thing happens all the time.

As for my comment being racist, it's only "racist" in the sense that it talks about a particular "race" of people (I don't consider Indians to be their own race, but that's irrelevant). As for saying, "They're even a bunch of them", that was a typo. I meant to write, "There's even a bunch of them".

  10. The new PowerMac G3 cases are nicer on Cooler Cases · · Score: 1

IMHO, this only further validates that PC case designers are nowhere near as innovative as the ones who work for Apple. These cases are all pretty boring - they're still the same dull boxes, only this time they have some colored shapes on the cover. And in many cases (no pun intended), the pretty colors just limit the number of visible drive bays.

  12. I have no idea what music I want to buy on The Music Industry and the MP3 · · Score: 1

I envy those people who can select individual tracks and make a CD they enjoy. Sometimes I hear a song on the radio that I like, so I think about buying the CD. Why? Because maybe there are other songs on the CD that I'll never hear on the radio. The only way for me to hear them is by buying the CD.

"But in a perfect world, you could just download all the MP3's and decide which ones you like". Well, if I can download them for free, why pay for it?

"Ok, then you can just download samples of each song." So what? I don't think a blurb is going to be enough to decide whether I like it. Besides, the only time I have to listen to music is in the car, which means I need it on CD to begin with.

All in all, free MP3's are the only way I get to hear music that I like that's not on the radio. Unfortunately, most of the songs on www.mp3.com suck big time. Maybe that's why they're free.

  13. Warp 3 and Warp 4 were surprises too on New OS/2 Warp client · · Score: 1

Here are a couple of tidbits that you might not know:

    1. Warp 3 was supposed to be a "performance update" only - no new features. That's where the name "Warp" came from - IBM used Star Trek terms as codenames for OS/2 products (the security component was called Odo, for instance). Warp 3 (aka OS/2 Version 3) was supposed to be just like OS/2 2.x, but run in 4MB on a 386. Well, along the way, they added tons of new features, including a much improved user interface.

    2. Six months before Warp 4 was released, it wasn't even on the planning board. Of course, a lot of the work was already done on OS/2 PPC, and much of easily transfered over, but it just goes to show how long IBM delays before making up its mind.

And IBM has said that Warp 5 won't have that much new, besides what's in the server (SMP, Journalled File System, etc). Somehow, I think there may be some goodies snuck in.

  14. They look ugly to me on Mozilla to use same Widgets on All Platforms · · Score: 1

Well, maybe not ugly, but certainly uninspired. Granted, to get a truly cross-platform look and feel, there's a lot you can't do (OS/2 doesn't support anti-aliased fonts, for instance, and the Mac prior to 8.5 didn't either), but I still think they could do MUCH better. Looks like they need to hire a real graphic designer (rather than someone who's read the GIMP how-to).

  17. Slashdot readers are not like most computer users! on PC style as important as Clock Speed · · Score: 1

Well, my thought was that if enough manufacturers made really nice cases for all their systems, the costs would spread themselves out and eventually it would be a non-issue. But the only way it'll ever get to that point is if customers start insisting that manufacturers make attractive cases!

  18. Slashdot readers are not like most computer users! on PC style as important as Clock Speed · · Score: 1

It's mind boggling reading all the drivel posted in this forum. You ask a bunch of geeks if they care how their computer looks, of course they'll say "no". Geeks don't care how anything looks, including themselves (which is why most of them can't get a date).

The dummer ones among you even say that you'd prefer function over form, thinking that you can't have both! Do you think a manufacturer is going to increase the price of a system because it looks nicer? Of course not! Competition won't let them! The whole idea is that ALL computers, regardless of capability or function, should look good.
