Sometimes product integration doesn't feel too intrusive - James Bond has always driven a flashy car. But sometimes, it's not nearly so feasible. If they find a way to work an ad for Red Bull into John Adams, I swear I will never watch TV again. Wristwatch makers have been engaging in extensive product placement for years.

I have trouble seeing why this is so important. Of course, since the site is slashdotted, I can't find out any gain numbers. This business of experimenting with antennas is very old hat, as is NEC.

That's hardly very deep space relative to our current position. You would be rarely more than 2 AU from the earth, and in astronomical standards that's a very small distance.

Second System Effect. Basically, you make a first version that is lean, does a few things well, and release that. Then in the second system you add a bunch of "it would be cool if..." things, making the second version huge, bloated, and not as good as the first version.

Vista, as compared to Windows 2000, for a big example. Where does NT figure into that model?

Uh actually, most scientists (indeed anyone) with a PhD thinks highly of him or herself. Of course, I can only speak of scientists I've met at university. This perspective is very deffinitely at odds with my personal experience. By far the majority were very humble people, who did the job they did because of a passion for the subject. I have only known or two holders of PhDs who would match your description, and neither of them where in a university environment doing science.

This is not true. The reason is that AC from the hydro company is supplied with the voltage and current in phase. However, in an inductor, current lags voltage. This causes the motor to waste energy. By adding a device that shifts the phase of the current relative to the voltage, you can save a great deal of energy. This is no more theft than "Energy Star" appliances are theft. This is simply improving the efficiency of the system.
